I'm feeling this one.

Have CoD MW2 on steam because it is one of the few games that I can do cross play with a friend who only plays on consoles and I'm on PC. They changed the steam launcher with CoD MW3 to some combined thing that launches, then I pick MW2 and the new launcher closes and then starts MW2 from scratch.

Yes, the launcher launches so that it can close and open MW2 like it used to.

But the best part is that CoD on PC does the thing where the game loads, tells you it has and update and requires a restart, Then when it restarts it has to update shaders. The best part is that both the stupid launcher and MW2 have separate updates and shaders. So the worst one was launcher has an update and has to load twice and complete shaders. Then MW2 starts and then requires an update, restarts and then shaders.

That's right, one time it took launching FOUR times and two sets of shaders just to start playing.

It is now uninstalled and is one of the few games on steam that I reviewed just so I could complain about this stupid design. Feels good to vent again because I had a ton of fun that made restarting twice annoying but tolerable, but always launching twice and sometimes more is just ridiculous.

Enk1,

You should clarify that whenever there’s an update, you update the game through Steam like normal, then when the update is complete, you load the game up only to see a pop-up that “Update requires restart” that forces you to close the game and restart it. Why does it need to start and then restart after an update? The game isn’t started when you update it, why do we have to start it after the patch just to have to immediately close it and start it again?

Does it also recompile shaders every single time you start the game, even if nothing about your hardware or software changed, like Warzone did?

That was infuriating

It is the same launcher as Warzone!

I would bet the main launcher's shaders that then closes to launch MW2 is doing the Warzone shaders. Before MW3 came out it would just do shaders once for both Warzone and MW2.

Me, a guy who works a lot and has a family playing for first time in a month:

Console must update before you can go online

Game must update

Console must restart

Ok guys you know what nevermind I’m going to bed

Annoyed_Crabby, do gaming w I can't believe they've done this.

I like how starting from Fallout 4 you can just loot without opening the loot ui, so you can still see it being empty and open the loot ui and be disappointed it’s empty.

sundray, do gaming w I can't believe they've done this.

When you’ve just searched 40 urns and found ~2 G in each one, it’s hard to fight muscle memory just because the tag on the 41st one shows empty.

But I still feel bad when I search empty containers.

They need to update their updater, for the sake of updating their updates. :-P

Oh THAT loading bar? It's just uploading important things and totally not searching for a server to Sprunge it's payload onto of your data.

Better than Windows Updates. Run through the updates, restart the computer, keep doing what you do, get message “we need you to restart because we just installed some updates”.

Motherfucker, I just restarted. Tf do you need a second restart for and only telling me after I get in and launch everything??

Worse yet you tell it to “update and shut down”

Windows goes “DEEERRRP TIME TO REBOOT AND FORCE YOU TO MANUALLY SHUT DOWN AFTER HURR DURR”

My kid is going to end up with one of my hundred retro handhelds. “What games do you have Dad?” “Yes.”

Hundreds?! Like those old tiger electronics handhelds?

BruceTwarzen,

I loved and hated these shitty ass things

Hundreds is an exaggeration, I’ll admit lol. But I’ve probably got around 20 or so from retroid, anbernic, and miyoo, and each one has an SD card with pretty much every retro game on it up through PS1 :)

I gave my nephew: My NES, N64, PS2, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance, with all the games I had. He played the hell out of them! In many cases, he unlocked things I never had, and he’d always talk about them and his progress.

I’ll be honest – I miss those things a lot – but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, seeing someone get to experience all those games for the first time, just like I had.

I'ma be the devil's advocate - even if they were free, eventually someone would have made it a subscription-based model since PSN servers cost money. Sure, it's not a lot of money, but it's money.

Cethin,

I’m not so sure. Steam servers also cost money. They make way more money from their cut of sales. On console the same thing happens. If not requiring the subscription gets more users, then you make more money by not having it.

They aren’t charging because it costs money to run. They’re charging because it’s more profitable.

GBU_28, do gaming w It's wild that they get away with charging for it

Just stop paying for it. After just a few weeks you’ll realize it was a silly addiction. There’s lots of great games that don’t require a subscription.

Krackalot,

Some people have friends they wanna play with. Or so I hear.

It’s why I went back to PC gaming. As an aging man with children, I am no longer interested in having a bleeding edge gaming machine so I went to consoles for a while. It was too painful keeping a subscription on something I don’t often play so I didn’t bother with a PS5 and got a steamdeck instead.

MajorHavoc, do gaming w It's wild that they get away with charging for it

There’s a lot of gamers in this thread too young to remember how overloaded and miserable the free console game servers were.

Microsoft was like “chuck us like ~$5 per month and we will put up enough servers so the games are actually playable”. At the time, it was the best deal available for console gaming.

Honestly an argument could be made it was the most economical way to play online, in general, at the time. The console cost was subsidized, and the online servers were arguably at-cost, and you really only needed to buy one copy of Halo to join the fun.

Remember when sony had a few database hacks and all the bootlickers were like “see paid services are better!” Fuckin idiots

TheMusicalFruit, do gaming w In this next game, you're a downtrodden anti-hero trying to survive in a dystopian world...

Nintendo is still making run, jump, eat this flower, collect the coins games and they’re still excellent.
