i_am_not_a_robot, do gaming w 'The point is to be generous': This $20 FPS releasing next month is trying something new—giving away a full version of the game

This isn’t new, but maybe it’s been forgotten since online matchmaking. The original Starcraft could be installed as the full version which required a CD and a CD key to run, or as a version that didn’t require a CD or a key and could only by used to join multiplayer games.

Varyag, do games w Against the Storm looks charming and cosy, but it's actually the best and most fiendish city builder I've played in years

Just picked this one up since it was cheap.and I’ve been wanting to play a village management game in a while. Holy crap this game is amazing. I spent 6 hours on it un the first day alone. I love how the roguelike format keeps it always engaging and direct, without meandering about trying to figure out what I want to do. It has clear goals, needs to be met, and multiple ways to reach those goals. I usually like playing RTS games in short bursts of Skirmishes, and this feels very similar. Trying different strategies with different buildings and terrains.

I was also looking at Timberborn (funny how both games have postapocalyptic sentient beavers) and Farthest Frontier, but I think I’ll be busy with AtS for a while until I get to try those two. And I’ll never need to even consider giving Ubisoft my money for Anno ever again.

@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

Timberborn is also really good, the water dynamics really makes the game stand out compared to other town/colony builders.

They’ve also added much needed improvements to water dynamics (aqueducts).

murmelade,

I absolutely loved AtS but couldn’t get past the tutorial in Timbertown… Felt too janky but it’s in early access so I guess I’ll give it another shot when they smooth things out for release.

polysics, do games w Valve is fixin' to start some arguments over the holidays because 'All adult members in a Steam Family' can see your Steam Replay page

Thankfully all those hours I put into Anomalous Coffee Machine will probably confuse people since the title doesn’t really give away what it is.

It’s porn in case that wasn’t obvious.

Ziglin,

It wasn’t. I thought it would be a sort of horror game based on the title. I’m slightly curious about how a game about/named after a coffee machine turns into that but I’m okay not knowing.

Speak for yourself I’m intrigued

polysics,

It’s actually both horror and porn.

You can download a demo version on itch.io it’s actually fun and you don’t necessarily have to play the parts with boobies.

Got a little mixed up there, I recalled hearing that Larian already had plans for their next game after BG3 but my brain incorrectly autofilled Witcher as what that game was - that's not even the right developer. Silly brain.

GhiLA, (edited ) do gaming w Elon Musk says too many game studios are owned by giant corporations so his giant corporation is going to start a studio to 'make games great again'
@GhiLA@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ah yes, gaming. That one industry you can’t really fake past a certain point or everyone will boycott, call it boring or go on strike?

Perfect. Good decisions. Waste as much money as possible. I hope Ubisoft is in on it. Take as many shit-for-brains publishers and devs as you can gather. They forget half of the industry is wearing knee-high socks and cat ears. Propaganda games will go over like trying to sell kale to a shark.

gnomesaiyan, do games w Remembering the Corrupted Blood incident: That time WoW was overrun by a virtual plague now referenced by Covid-19 researchers
@gnomesaiyan@lemmy.world avatar

If I remember correctly, this happened in Everquest Frontiers. You’d catch some shitty AoE debuff in town and give it to other people, including attackable NPCs like guards. Guards were not easy to kill, so they just carried that shit for weeks. The only way to remove the debuff was die, but it just kept spreading, so the best way was to not coach to other towns, but Freeport was basically fucked. That was SOE for ya, and they did that shit on purpose.

CosmoNova, do games w Steam is 'an unsafe place for teens and young adults': US senator warns Gabe Newell of 'more intense scrutiny' from the government if Valve doesn't take action against extremist content

I’m surprised European governments haven’t demanded better enforcement of laws when it comes to hate speech on Steam. Instead they regulate stuff like lootboxes or spicy content because they think those are more harmful than fascism apparently.

caseofthematts,

The latter two are a much more broad and prevalent issue in the gaming industry overall. No need for the whataboutism.

CosmoNova,

That’s not whataboutism. Whataboutism is when someone brings something unrelated up to make the main topic look less important and that’s not happening here.

Blazingtransfem98,

I suspect they haven’t heard about it as much lately. I bet if German politicians heard about the Swastika and Nazi stuff they would be on it very quickly. Nazi content like that is a big No-No in Germany.

DarkFuture, do gaming w 'My personal failure was being stumped': Gabe Newell says finishing Half-Life 2: Episode 3 just to conclude the story would've been 'copping out of [Valve's] obligation to gamers'
@DarkFuture@lemmy.world avatar

I respect Valve for Steam. It’s far and away the best platform.

But the bottom line is the Half-life series made Valve who they are. It made Gabe rich. Yet despite having all the money necessary to have all the resources necessary, they abandoned the series, letting millions of die hard fans down.

I’ve never seen a more beloved game series simply abandoned.

For that there is no forgiveness, Gabe.
