How old will Minecraft be when they update the graphics to make everything more realistic instead of just cubes? 🤔

Tamo240,

RandomVideos,

I have a feeling the developers of the most purchased game in the world arent going to completely change the graphics that made it successful

Not a fan of the water, the new visuals somehow make the texture look even more obviously tiled

Elevator7009sAlt, do games w Minecraft's 'Vibrant Visuals' Upgrade the Start of a New 'Graphical Journey'

Players will be able to toggle between the new and previously existing visuals of Minecraft with the simple press of a button, meaning a classic look can be maintained by those who desire it.

thank goodness, shaders are pretty but I am massively suspect to nostalgia bias and I do not want to dedicate performance to shaders if my computer cannot handle it

Looks like a lot of the shader mods that have existed for ages

dual_sport_dork,
@dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

Minecraft has a long and storied history of cribbing features from modders and integrating them into the official base game. This includes hoppers, light senors, pistons, slime blocks, several of the types of trees, armor stands, displaying maps in frames, quite a few mobs, several of the current biome types, and probably a whole bunch of other stuff I can’t remember offhand.

So yeah, stealing the idea (even if not the outright code) from shader mods would be completely on brand, and not at all unexpected. It’s up to the player base to decide how they feel about this, but honestly it seems nothing short of kidnapping babies and setting them on fire would get any significant portion of people to turn away from Microsoft’s stewardship of the game, given how hard they’ve tried to screw it up post-acquisition and yet it continues to print them money.

Elevator7009sAlt,

I wonder how much of this is network effects? I cannot describe how many times I have fired up Minecraft all over again after not touching it for awhile because oh, a friend made a server and my other friends are playing too! At least in my experience, it seems to just be a thing that if a social circle contains mostly people who happen to enjoy video games, even if we formed around liking to sing or something and not our love of video games, it will try to make a Minecraft server.

CommanderCloon,

Mojang’s “stealing” started from at least the pistons in 2011, 3 years before the acquisition. Credit was given to the original mod author under “Additional programming”, and they did reuse the actual code from the mod

I don’t think it’s fair to call that stealing, for multiple reason:

  • copyright of game mechanics should never be supported, if we serioussly consider this stealing then a lot of innovation will be completely hampered, and videogames will be subject to abuses worse than what exists in other creative industries. Copyright on game concepts would be akin to copyright on camera angles, special effects, etc…
  • mods are only available on PC. Taking ideas from the community and incorporating them into the base game makes the content available for everyone, even vanilla PC players
  • Mojang’s has been very decent with OG mod authors, often being assisted by said authors to incorporate their content into the game, see how they worked with the author of Mo’ Creatures, a mod for animals, to add the horse into the game

Love to see even a little QoL upgrades for the building.

After playing Valheim, Palworld base building feels so bad and limiting.

glimse,

After valheim, every base building game I’ve played feels so bad and limiting!

MrFinnbean,

After short souls searching i would say Satisfactory building is great too.

glimse,

Satisfactory building didn’t frustrate me by any means but it’s a far cry from Valheim in terms of flexibility.

That said, I don’t think it needs to be. You’re building rigid, utilitarian factories and can basically fly - no need for fancy staircases or angled walls!

Man now I just really want to play Valheim again

MrFinnbean,

We clearly play satisfactory differently.

You can make pretty amazing builds in that game.

It just hit me. Satisfactory, Valheim, Minecraft and Ikea all come from Sweden. Swedes must have building things in their genes.

glimse,

You can absolutely make amazing builds but pretty much everything is rectangular. I am NOT knocking Satisfactory at all, it’s one of my favorite games… Valheim is just way more flexible

I hope this lives to see 1.0. That assuming it doesn’t get killed by legal fees.

simple,

They’re backed by Sony now, no way the company is going under at this point. Worst case scenario is they pay some money to Nintendo and move on.

It’s on sale on PSN. I might actually pick it up now.

Yeah yeah, palworld collab when?

Keener, do games w Lego Confirms Pokémon Collaboration Set For 2026

Mega Blocks already have this covered. I’m curious to know what major differences there’d be to justify the inevitably high cost of the Lego branded versions

Kecessa,

The most major difference will be quality and less reliance on custom blocks?

We bought some of the Mega Blocks Pokemons for my SiL’s kids and you can feel that the quality just isn’t on par with Lego

Keener,

I’m currently working on the Charmander with my daughter. The quality feels fine, but I’ll definitely be curious to try out a lego one when it releases

Zahille7, do games w Lego Confirms Pokémon Collaboration Set For 2026

It only took 25 years. I’m not even a pokemon fan but I’m curious what their sets would look like. I have been tempted by a couple of the Mega Bloks sets though, and I even got one of the mystery pokeball sets and ended up getting Bulbasaur.

catloaf, do games w Lego Confirms Pokémon Collaboration Set For 2026

Seeing Lego just milking brands is pretty disappointing.

tonytins,
@tonytins@pawb.social avatar

I miss the days of Lego Island and Rock Raiders.

CosmoNova,

Loved those games and the sets even though the latter came with a few huge pieces and empty spaces. That certainly didn’t sit well with everyone.

themurphy,

I have to disagree.

To play with these brands in the LEGO ecosystem is fantastic for me and the kid. We really enjoy the cross overs you can make, and LEGO makes sure everything fits.

But if LEGO didnt make “OG content”, I would agree. But they do.

Zahille7,

Ninjago is still going strong after like what? 10 years? And it’s a pretty good theme with all kinds of badass builds and part usage. City has never not been a thing since it’s creation, and we’re still regularly getting modulars every year since like 2005. Lego is still churning out tons of their original stuff: the new Neo Space, Dreamzzz, Friends, the aforementioned Ninjago.

Sure they’re making more and more licensed stuff, but I’d honestly “blame” Dimensions and people as a whole. Who else would want to see Lego Ghostbusters or Pokemon or Sonic interact with each other? Fans of those franchises, that’s who. Lego is just giving people what they want.

Idk why this was a whole rant, but hey.

echodot,

I don’t mind them having themed sets based on popular IP it’s just I wish they would do some larger sets.

Personally I dropped some serious cash on the Lego USS Enterprise, hell they could even do Lego Expense, why are they doing boring small scale stuff?

Zahille7,

Because not everyone is going to or wants to drop serious cash for a big set. Some people don’t have the space or whatever the reasoning may be.

Also, imo The Expanse is a bit too adult for Lego to adapt. But they did make an ornithopter from Dune (the new one, complete with a floating Baron Harkonnen minifig), so who knows.

nolannice,
@nolannice@lemmy.world avatar

I would agree, but they recently did Dune another adult Scifi so it’s not impossible

echodot,

A little shuttlecraft wouldn’t be big. I’m just saying that they should give themselves the options to expand.

nokturne213,

It was the Star Wars IP that saved LEGO in the late 90s and early 00s. They do still have their own lines, and they have brought back some of the old faves for a time.

i don’t believe you

Mod support? Between this and Skyblivion, the one with better mod support wins.

duchess,

probably non-existent

vga,

I wonder, can they just sue Skyblivion off the map?

yunxiaoli,

You can send a cease and desist for any reason to anyone at anytime.

But they wouldn’t be able to win in court, the eula of both games explicitly allow using their IP in mods
