So I’m not into megs man, platformer shooters are super not my thing. But after loving Paradise Killer I think detective games just might be. I’ve never played any of the Ace games, any suggestions on which is a good entry point to the series? Is there an overall story of are the games self contained?
They are mostly self contained but I would still recommend going through them in order since there are recurring characters. Start from the Pheonix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy.
Ace Attorney seems complete, including the Investigations and Great spin-offs. Mega Man collection apparently doesn’t have Mega Man 11 (last entry in the OG series) and the bundle doesn’t have the Zero series (4 games), the ZX series (2 games), and the Star Force series (3 games). There’s a separate collection for the Zero series, and maybe the ZX series too. I don’t know about Star Force. Also no Mega Man Legend 1 & 2, no Mega Man X Command Mission, Mega Man Power Battle, but those are different types of games, not the classic 2D platformers. No Zero and ZX is quite a miss though.
That might be underselling how big the series is - not to mention that many of them have been completely re-done in HD so they’re no longer on GBA graphics.
These are generally pretty big games. A lot of “mystery” games are about one mystery, but every AA game has at least 4, the last of each game being a giant epic journey.
I got Persona 5 Royal in the Steam Summer Sale this year and I’ve been obsessed. I wanted to play Persona 4 when it came out but I was a teenager and didn’t have any realistic way to get ahold of it, and then I was just super busy when Persona 5 came out but it is truly an amazing game. It definitely takes some getting used to and I would definitely not recommend to someone who isn’t already a fan of JRPGs or anime but if you do like JRPGs and are okay with an anime aesthetic it doesn’t really get much better than this. I knew basically nothing about Persona going in other than that it’s about teens with JoJo-style Stands and it has a cool art style with interesting character designs, and I was pleasantly surprised at every turn. My only complaint is that the combat is really more about style than difficulty and the game is sort of easy even on hard mode. Definitely worth it for $15 even on its own.
Randomized music mod is the best one. Despite Take over and Last Surprise being a bop, they will get tiresome. This mod will pull battle themes and music from all personas past.
Also the cut content restoration mod that had some uncensored elements that were uncovered in the 2005 beta like Ryujis “No Mo Rules” shirt becoming "fuckin rules"
If you don’t like anime, and you’re too old to relate to teens anymore, and you might cringe at edgy youth fiction… Is P5R still worth playing?
I’ve heard some people really love it, but I’ve been very hesitant to play it for the above reasons. Also it’s like 200h long so it’s a big commitment.
As someone who really likes the game: No, it probably isn’t for you. The story is very much edgy youth fiction and much of the game is reading through the story. The gameplay is good, but not so good as to carry the game if you dislike the story and aesthetics.
That said? It is also basically a genre at this point. Metaphor Refantasio (sp?) is literally “Persona but adults in fantasy land”. And Clair Obscur is a related genre but took a LOT of inspiration from the Personas.
Yeah. My tinfoil on why there hasn’t been a true new Persona game in almost ten years (P5 base was 2016?) is because Atlus et al realized this.
Going back to the same stories but with new content or better graphics lets people rely on nostalgia. Doing something new set in the same high school environment (which is a big aspect of Persona’s themes and motifs) makes all those 30 and 40 year old fans start to question what they are doing with their lives.
I first played it when I was like 30, I think that it doesn’t rely on either age or medium enough to ruin the experience. It’s not perfect, the storyline can be a touch flimsy here and there, but the core experience is amazing.
Also the runtime is like 120 hours. Still a big commitment.
P5R is a reminder to me that I should be patient. Got it for 40 bucks way back, 2 hours played. I‘ll play it eventually, no doubt, but I didn‘t need it then lol
