Sure, but I think that the type of game is a pretty big input. Existing generative AI isn’t great at portraying a consistent figure in multiple poses and from multiple angles, which is something that many games are going to want to do.
On the other hand, I’ve also played text-oriented interactive fiction where there’s a single illustration for each character. For that, it’d be a good match.
AI-based speech synth isn’t as good as human voice acting, but it’s gotten pretty decent if you don’t need to be able to put lots of emotion into things. It’s not capable of, say, doing Transistor, which relied a lot on the voice acting. But it could be a very good choice to add new material for a character in an old game where the actor may not be around or who may have had their voice change.
I’ve been very impressed with AI upscaling. I think that upscaling textures and other assets probably has a lot of potential to take advantage of higher resolution screens. Maybe one might need a bit of human intervention, but a factor of 2 increase is something that I’ve found that the software can do pretty well without much involvement.
It would be so cool if this meant Funcom had extra money to put into The Secret World (now known as Secret World Legends). Love that game, wish there was more. I know there's a TTRPG now but it's not the same.
The PVE survival gameplay - which is most of the game - is very, very good. It never stops being tense and scary. Worms, sand storms, quick sand, etc… they created an incredibly compelling game world.
It does fall a little flat when you try to focus on missions/quests, because they are geared toward making you explore. If you get ahead of them, you will find yourself repeating things a lot. Even focusing on missions, you’ll repeat certain things a little too often. The story is surprisingly good once it gets going.
The PvP portions of the game are an out-of-control dumpster fire. At around 80h it suddenly goes from being an excellent PvE survival MMO to being “Escape Tarkov: Desert Edition”. The game seems built around this idea of faction conflict, but the PvP is a completely unstructured free-for-all. It’s awful. They’ve said they will make some of the endgame PvE instead of solely PvP, but it doesn’t sound like they plan on actually fixing the PvP at all.
Overall, I recommend it. It doesn’t succeed at everything it tries to do, but it does try. And even if the developers seem a little stubborn (especially with their lazy, half-cooked PvP approach) they are definitely listening to feedback.
I’ll admit I’m very pessimistic they will continue the upwards trend but with the remakes/reboots/sequels due (hopefully) later this year I hope they do.
