telemachuszero, do gaming w I tried playing the two original Baldur's Gate games on Ubuntu. It's hell.

GOG's Linux support doesn't extend much beyond providing you with the binaries that the developers supplied. You're left to figure out running the games yourself and hoping the developer didn't make too many assumptions about system libraries.

Valve provides Linux runtime environments for native Linux games to target and run in, plus tools for developers to use to build for that environment. It's not perfect but you'll generally have a much easier time with Linux native games from Steam.

I'm sympathetic to GOG's goals, but generally stick with Steam because of Valve's level of support and commitment.

If you want to keep using the GOG version, you could try running the Windows build in Heroic Games Launcher + Wine-GE or Proton-GE (they're available as runners within Heroic, it works pretty seamlessly). You'll also get Cloud Saves which GOG doesn't support for native Linux builds.

The native Linux version of Baldur's Gate II Enhanced is running fine for me from Steam (on Fedora 38 Silverblue + Steam installed as a Flatpak). It also features cloud saves (and achievements if you care about those), if you're set on playing the native build and willing to switch to Steam.

Rocketpoweredgorilla, do gaming w I don't want to "Press any key to continue" to the main menu
@Rocketpoweredgorilla@kbin.social avatar

It annoys me when you close down a game, and it only has the option to send you to the title menu instead of closing out. It's not the worst thing ever, but it's kind of annoying when you need to go, and you have to "quit" the game just to wait for it to go back to the title screen and make you hit "quit" again a second time.

delitomatoes,

It’s for console ports. They have a power button…so on PC you’ll need to go to that button created specifically to quit to desktop

XTL,

Or, they have a hypervisor, so instead of needing to quit from inside, you just hit the magic button and go back to the console UI. Game is suspended and might resume after power off or switch, or not, depending on the system and user.

You could just ctrl-alt-del or window switch or whatever to get the same experience on a computer.

phoenixes,

I honestly will just slap cmd-q on most games. If they don’t handle it properly… well, sucks for me I guess, but most do. (on a mac)

I wonder how most games treat alt-f4 on windows?

N1cknamed,
@N1cknamed@feddit.nl avatar

It differs, on some games it doesn’t work or still takes a long time. For those programs I like to use SuperF4, which kills the process when you press ctrl+alt+f4.

erwan,

They need to be less lazy on the ports and add the option to quit to desktop on the PC version even if it doesn’t exist on the console version.

Some games do, however I hate when I have to go to the menu before being able to quit to Desktop.

Ah ok lol... I got this png off one of those free image sites because I was too lazy to make my own and been putting it off so far.

NotSteve_,

FromSoft games are the worst for that. They log you off the servers and then make you login again to get to the title screen to quit

LinyosT,

Just alt-F4 once you quit the game and hit the title screen or you’re sure the game has successfully saved.

Dragonmind, do gaming w I don't want to "Press any key to continue" to the main menu

Games that don’t do this: infamous series. The first time on the first one is incredible. But afterwards as a trend, loading the game goes straight to your most recent save with zero menu.

Killzone: Shadowfall. No intros. Straight to the main menu when you boot. Unique and wild every time!

finthechat, do gaming w I don't want to "Press any key to continue" to the main menu
@finthechat@kbin.social avatar

I should be able to click the icon from the desktop/Steam/console menu/whatever and just be put into the game (optionally with it paused) ready to play, so I can walk away and get a drink or something while it loads.

Sas,

Age of Wonders 4 does that with a caveat. First it opens a launcher (which is fairly quick) and in there you can select to go to the main menu or directly into your last savegame when launching the game.

Stillhart, do gaming w I don't want to "Press any key to continue" to the main menu

It’s been bugging me in BG3. Mostly because it takes a while to load and when it’s finally loaded, I have to press a button then WAIT AGAIN for a stupid animation before getting to the main menu so I can then load some more.

Gimme a command line to just automatically “Continue” please. The pretty animtions and menu were fun at first. Now I just want to get back to my brain parasites as quickly as possible. I’m sure that has nothing to do with my brain parasites.

Scrath,

There’s a mod on nexusmods to skip the startup intros. That might help in speeding things up a little

Stillhart,

Will those work in linux?

Scrath,

I have no clue. Guess that’s something you would have to try, though I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work.

Bonus negative points for games that only check DLC after that button press

Don’t forget games that have you manually press button to dismiss and unlocked DLC.

It’s very fun with games that you buy after few years and have hundred DLC (ex. fighting games) 😅

Usually takes few minutes of just button pressing to dismiss all new dlcs

I got curious myself and agreed, so I went looking.

A lot of sources specified that it was part of a technical requirements checklist, and…

Yeap. It doesn’t explicitly require a “press any key” screen, but it gives a more pleasant screen to look at while you select a user. People online also say it’s used to detect which controller is in use.

If you add a feature like this to a game, it becomes harder to maintain if there are discrepancies between builds. So presumably it’s usually just left in rather than removed.

Durotar,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

People online also say it’s used to detect which controller is in use.

I don’t get it. Any modern game can detect when you connect or disconnect a controller on the fly, in the actual game.

Oka,

Yet they are not built in features to game engines such as Unity and Unreal

Dangdoggo,

Unity's new input package does exactly this.

Thassodar,

Keyword: new. From now on people can do it, but prior to now it wasn’t possible from what they’re saying.

Dangdoggo,

The New Input Package is actually just what Unity users call it because it isn't the original and requires a package manager install from the stock LTR releases but it's been out for a few years now. Still, you're right, although I see no reason not to adopt it, most games that are using it will probably be releasing this year.

snowbell,
@snowbell@beehaw.org avatar

Some games use it to determine who is player one vs player two. i.e. whoever presses the button first is treated as player 1.

Carter,

I remember a lot of games assigning the “press any button” controller has player 1 back in the day.

chloyster, do gaming w I don't want to "Press any key to continue" to the main menu

I get your point. And kind of agree for the most part. But idk, some title screens are nice to look at. Having the option to just view it until I’m ready to go on is nice imo. One button press isn’t all that bad. But yeah when loading or dlc checking has to be done after pressing the button it’s more annoying. That should happen before imo

Holo, do piracy w Rip udemy courses?

I watch and record mine via Firefox and OBS. It’s a ratyer long way to do it, but it works. You just need to sit aorund for 3 or 4 of the videos and wait until the questionnaire appears. Once you’ve skipped that, you can normally walk away and leave it recording the rest of the course.

vd1n, do piracy w Pirate Netflix

Get stremio.

Psythik,

This. Stremio is exactly what you’re looking for OP. Works just like Netflix, runs on your TV. Every show/movie from every streaming platform is there.

Just make sure to install the Torrentio and Streaming Catalogs plugins to get the free content to show up. I also recommend a Real-Debrid subscription cause it it allows you to stream instantly without delay. (In fact, you can download any torrent you want instantly with Debrid.)

chimmy_chonga,

Is this possible without torrents? Like getting content from a streaming website rather than torrents?

Psythik,

Stremio uses torrents, but they’re direct downloads. Everything is stored on a separate server. It’s similar to a seed box, except no waiting cause the files were already downloaded beforehand by what’s called a “Debrid service”.

You can also use Debrid to directly download any torrent you want, not just movies and TV. I have a gigabit connection so it’s way faster than any torrent client could ever dream to achieve.

Most of my steam library works, either native or via proton (happens automatically)

Protondb.com

Tranus,

It should be noted that games that arent verified with proton won’t work until you change a steam setting that enables using compatibility tools on all games. You can also set this per game.

Bluescluestoothpaste, do games w Europa Universalis IV and Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You free on Epic Games this week

Am I crazy or is europa universalis just a worse version of crusader kings? Love crusader kings but mever tried EU because it just seems like the same game with less features?

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s the same engine, but the focus is different: CK is about the ruling dynasty, EU is about the country itself. Time period is also different (EU4 goes from 1444 to 1821),

A good example of that is that in EU4 your country can be the junior partner of a personal union, where it needs to fight against its rulers to get independence. You won’t see anything similar in CK3, because you are the ruling dynasty.

Bluescluestoothpaste,

I guess, idk that seems less fun to me lol. And in CK3 you can absolutely be a vassal of a larger kingdom and fight (or negotiate) for your independence.

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

And in CK3 you can absolutely be a vassal of a larger kingdom and fight (or negotiate) for your independence.

Yes but you can’t be a junior partner of a personal union, since this means that you (the dynasty) would be fighting yourself. On the other hand in EU4 this works fine since you’re the Senate government/country/state itself, not the king or the dynasty. It was just an example on the different focus, mind you.

On EU4 being less fun than CK3: personally I like EU4 better because I care far more about groups in Modern times interacting on a global level than individuals in Mediaeval times interacting on a regional level. And EU4 always involves some sort of “if I did this in real life I’d be a monster” decision, that actually makes me understand a lot of the shit that governments do, such as culturecide or backstabbing/Realpolitik.

But there’s no “right” choice, it’s different strokes for different folks.
