SnotFlickerman, (edited ) do gaming w Download Eden a Switch emulator as long as you can

Do you know where to get that final build of Yuzu anymore? Asking for a friend.

EDIT: Flathub still works:

flatpak install flathub org.yuzu_emu.yuzu

Same thing works for final build of Ryujinx:

flatpak install flathub org.ryujinx.Ryujinx

thingsiplay,

If you don’t get it from the original developers before the closure, then there is always a little bit of risk getting malware filled builds. So I would be highly cautious. That’s why you should build either from source, or archive before its shut down. If you search the web, there are many sources, sites and users offering the executable for either Windows or other operating systems. I personally wouldn’t download and execute random executables like that.

That’s the reason why I don’t give links, because I can’t guarantee its free from malware. Really, the best is you build from source. I know most people don’t do that, but this is the best.

SnotFlickerman,

I am happy to build from source, but I don’t have the source.

thingsiplay,

search for “yuzu” on archive.org should give lot of interesting results. There are source codes and latest builds available. I can’t be sure if even the sources are not tempered with. Use at own risk.

I think the latest Yuzu version from the original developers is “1733”. I have the version “1731” (2024-03-01) only 2 days before the shutdown. I had archived everything that day when reading about NOntendo going after Yuzu.

SnotFlickerman,

Dug in a little bit and ended up here:

web.archive.org/web/…/org.yuzu_emu.yuzu

Which was linked to from here on the original Yuzu site:

web.archive.org/web/20240304063132/…/downloads/#l…

The flathub manual installation via command line still works. Unless flathub has been hacked (which there is currently no evidence that they have), it’s the same Yuzu. Seems to be version 1734.

flatpak install flathub org.yuzu_emu.yuzu

The response from the server indicates this is the same Yuzu.

Info: app org.yuzu_emu.yuzu branch stable is end-of-life, with reason:
This application is no longer maintained. See https://yuzu-emu.org/ for details.
Required runtime for org.yuzu_emu.yuzu/x86_64/stable (runtime/org.kde.Platform/x86_64/5.15-23.08) found in remote flathub

thingsiplay,

That’s interesting! I didn’t know Yuzu was still available on Flathub (don’t remember to have checked it). There is also Ryujinx (the other big Switch emulator that was available alongside Yuzu) still available on Flathub. Its less performant and Tears of the Kingdom had early after 7 hours or so a game breaking bug hindering progress, that made me to play on Yuzu. Then I stayed on Yuzu. But I have it installed too, just in case. :-)

Yuzu works great, but I did not test with newest games. You also need Firmware and prod keys (I’m not sure if the keys are actually needed in Yuzu). Some games could require a minimum Firmware version. I’m not sure if its allowed to post links here, so I’m leaving it to you for home exercise.

I finished my No Man’s Sky expedition. This is the first time the game had actually hooked me. I really don’t know if it’s the corvette building or something else but I really enjoyed the whole experience.

And of course I was playing Silksong because still haven’t explored everything. But I will say, I’m not getting the same high I got from Hollow knight. I feel like the areas in Hollow knight had more sense of discovery. Most areas in Silksong feel like a different gradient of run down. It fits thematically but when you’re exploring I’m not getting the “I wonder what’s here” because I know there’s just more decay. I also don’t enjoy how hidden some places are. I don’t remember Hollow knight being like this but Silksong feels like I’m playing Wolfenstein 3D where I’m just hugging every wall to see if there’s a hidden wall. I don’t feel that rewarded for being perceptive because finding new areas comes down to swinging the nail at anything that looks remotely breakable or jumping at any place that looks passable. I also enjoy the charm system of Hollow knight more because it’s more flexible. Overall Silksong kinda makes me wish I was playing Hollow knight instead. It doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just not as good as Hollow knight.

I’ve been on a 3D platformer binge.

Just finished Castle on the Coast and was pleasantly surprised. It starts off feeling a little janky, but after the first 30-60 minutes realize it’s intentional and you are a silly giraffe parkour GOD. Some later levels get into abstract platforming and refreshingly different mechanics than I’ve experienced before. Worth checking out if you’re a 3D platformer-head.

Currently playing through Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Never played any of them before, but always wanted to. Just finished the first one and it was quite fun, although I did not like the final boss. There should have been a checkpoint after the first phase (2 keys phase). Looking forward to finding out how they developed the mechanics from there in 2 and 3.

Telorand,

Thanks for the rec! I have Castle on the Coast, but it’s been low on my “play later” list. I’ll move it up!

otp, do games w Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, a JRPG, just got released on Steam—and this is a big deal because this game is to PC what Final Fantasy VII was to PlayStation.

Some history is in order. The two most influential JRPG developers are Square Enix and Nihon Falcom. Square Enix gave us Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

Uhh… credibility lost. They’re saying history is in order and they immediately begin by rewriting history.

Squaresoft and Enix were two different companies for decades, particularly when they were giving us Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

atomicpoet,

Notice I wrote in present tense, not past tense. Square Enix are one company now.

otp,

Notice I wrote in present tense

Immediately after saying “some history is in order”.

Square Enix didn’t give us the original Final Fantasy nor the original Dragon Quest. They give us those games now. But writing as if they were always one company feels like rewriting history.

atomicpoet,

I think there might be a small misunderstanding. I wasn’t saying they’re one company—just noting the influence they both still carry today. However you look at it, Square Enix are the caretakers of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, much like how Bandai Namco continue to carry Pac-Man forward.

Instead of focusing on the negatives, why not celebrate what these games have meant to so many of us? Their impact is still worth appreciating.

Keep in mind that GTA V released in the PS3 - which is now considered a retro console.

I'm not a fan of looter shooters, so this was never gonna work for me anyway, but I wanna mention this because I found it funny: Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition is $130 and the last 17 games I bought on Steam cost me $127, and that includes a few DLCs 😂

I also just realized this: currently at 60%, Borderlands 4 has worse user rating than any of those 17 games 😂

DaddleDew, do gaming w A reminder to not take online negativity too seriously

With 20/20 hindsight it was obviously a good idea.

But at the time of making the decision, it was an unbelievably risky plan and the odds were stacked against it. As a matter of fact, for every successful 2D platformer made with care and love that gets released and becomes successful, there are dozens that fail miserably and that you will never hear of.

Yes, believing in yourself and taking risks makes success possible, but remember that it does not guarantee it.

Azzu,

This comment sounds like it’s discouraging these kind of risks. But I feel like you should almost always take them, because otherwise your life is just hollow.

eyes,

I think you’ve got to work out what your appetite for risk is. It’s important to do take risks sometimes even if they scare you to move your life forward but also sometimes don’t. I’ve seen a bunch of people really fuck their lives up because they just kept rolling the dice.

Azzu,

But what is “fucking your life up”? What is the end goal of life that you have to achieve, else you failed your life?

Lileath,

One of my goals in life is to not become impoverished due to bad financial decisions, and think of how many people quit their jobs to try to make a successful game just for their plan to not work out and them then trying to somehow get their lives back in order so they won’t become homeless.

I’m sorry honey but you have to understand that daddy took a risk otherwise he would feel hollow! Not hollow!

banause,

Yeah, that’s not how it works when you don’t live in the US.

boonhet,

Where do you live that nobody needs to work? I would sure like to move there.

Don_alForno,

“A family whose business failed will not just be left to starve” is very different from “nobody needs to work”.

boonhet,

I mean sure, your friends and family won’t let you starve. But you can’t rely on them forever. Government ain’t doing shit either: At least in my country, to get unemployment benefits, you need to be laid off or fired. If you quit your job to develop a game and fail, that’s on you. Yes, there’s also disability benefits, but those are small and require you to be disabled. Food banks exist too, but they don’t help you pay rent, nor do you get a full month’s worth of food every month.

All in all, a family with kids must have at least one working adult or HUGE savings.

So again, where’s the paradise where government will keep your rent or mortgage paid and your family fed if your game dev endeavour doesn’t pan out? I wanna move there.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

We have decent worker protections in Belgium, but if you quit your job here to work on games I don’t know if you have the right to unemployment (since you weren’t fired). Even then, it only lasts for a year or so if you have worked at the place for 5 years, with the monthly payment decreasing significantly until the last few months you only get like 500€ per month.

big_slap,

luck has a lot to do with success, people often forget

Duamerthrax,

Luck and a good review from a relevant reviewer. The devs of Nightmare Reaper credit Civvie11’s reviews of their game to the multifold increase of sales after they sent him a redeem code. And that’s not the only game that he’s helped out.

Strider,

And the other way around, too. With the best conditions, you also need luck. (while still fully agreeing)

I haven’t played E:D since before Odyssey released. I lost interest when they stopped supporting VR for the new content.

I did get a Fleet Carrier though. I wonder if it’s still there or if I ran out of upkeep money.

Good game, shame it’s a live service though. It will probably just die if/when they turn off the servers.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure what you’re talking about when it comes to VR. They never stopped supporting VR… Like at all. Odyssey also has full VR support and has since launch. I am genuinely confused as to why you think that

drspod,

The new on-foot FPS gameplay that they added with Odyssey didn’t get first class VR support. You can keep your headset on, but you have to switch to a regular control method and control the game as though it’s on a 2D monitor even though you’re wearing a 6DOF headset with motion controls available. For anyone that’s played VR, this is the worst kind of experience and very disappointing.

Making first-class VR controls is a lot of extra work, probably, but for a game that was sold as a flagship VR title when the original Oculus came out, it just leaves a bad taste for all the VR players, who felt like FDev were leaving them behind.

Maybe they’ve added better support now, but I wouldn’t know about that as I haven’t played it. On release it was a disappointment for VR players.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Have to switch to a regular control method

Does the rest of the game support full motion controls now? It didn’t the last time I played, so it didn’t matter if you were in ship or on foot; you were doing everything with a normal controller, M&KB or joystick setup regardless. It always annoyed me because why can’t I just use my hands to move the throttle stick and steering column in-game?

drspod,

That’s a fair point. I used a HOTAS, the Logitech Saitek X52 which the in-game ship controls are modelled after, which was the most immersive way to play.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I’m still pissed that I attempted to buy that setup from Amazon like 3 times, and they would ship it but then cancel the order and refund me without explanation. I want one of those so damn bad 😭

beneeney,

Yeah, I also used to play E:D a lot until Odyssey dropped. VR+HOTAS was an amazing experience despite the grindy nature of the game. I enjoyed every second of it - but wow Odyssey really threw it out the window.

I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky a lot lately and it’s super fun, but it makes me want to try E:D again. I don’t have VR anymore, but I wonder if it would be good with head-tracking. I also feel like I’ve missed out on so much of the ongoing story the past few years.
