L4D2. simple and AMAZING arcade zombie shooter. will never be uninstalled from my computers and super cheap.

Available on PC, Steam (if you’re willing to pay), and android (through F-droid, not sure about play store or any of the others):

Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Run though randomly generated dungeon floors. Every 5th floor, fight a boss. I suck at it, so I’ve only gotten past the 2nd boss once, but that’s because I suck. Currently 5 different classes with a 6th in development (unless I’m wrong and it’s already out), each playing differently for the most part. You’ve got a warrior, rogue, huntress, mage, and duelist, with all but warrior being locked until you do easy enough requirements to unlock them for subsequent runs.

Can pause, exit, and come back to a run whenever during a run.

Available on PC and android (both F-droid and play store);

SuperTuxKart. Cart racer with a lot of fan made content like maps and carts. Has varying difficulties, but the lower the difficulty the lower the max speed in a race, if that matters to anyone else besides me. Not exactly full-on single-player since there is the option of online play, either against friends or random players if you find an open lobby.

Can pause pretty much any time offline but backing out makes you have to restart a race from the beginning. Same thing applies to the multi-race cup things.

A great auto-battler released just this year named The Gnorp Apologue!

Your role is relatively passive, but a little time investment is required for progress.

Noita - Action 2D platformer

Ale & Tale Tavern - survival food service

Satisfactory - Open world Factory builder (my current addiction)

IMO your selections are a weird fit for the term “chill” as they seem to be more action games but the above should have a similar “intense at times, with breaks” vibe i get from yours.

I never expected A Girl Who Chants Love At the Bound of This World: YUNO on the PC98 to take me like 80 hours to complete without a guide.

I 100% Tunic in 15 hours. I expected it to be longer and harder, considering it’s not even in a real language and you have to translate it to solve most of the puzzles.

frank,

Wow, that’s very fast imo. Good for you!

Great randomizer out there for it. And it’s Archipelago compatible so you can mix it in with other randomizers alone or with friends, in case you want more!

I got surprised by DeathStranding.

Did not expect that a game that’s basically about going from A to B through walking could be that lengthy, having great scenery and a weird, vague but good story.

I’m really excited for its sequel, just hoping it will also be available for PC on release.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

They already said it’s going to be a PS5 exclusive.

ModernRisk,
@ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Honestly, that’s a real bummer. I hope it’s a timed exclusive (so with time it will be on PC too).

misk,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

Is that correct? Kojima bought full rights to the IP couple of months ago and released Death Stranding on everything immediately. Seems like it’ll be timed exclusive at most.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

They’ve only announced it to be getting released on PS5 in 2025. That’s almost all the information there is about the game rn. I would take it to mean timed-exclusive, but that’s still not releasing on all platforms at once.

AustralianSimon,
@AustralianSimon@lemmy.world avatar

It was a PS4 exclusive too but now you can play on PC. Once the sales droop it’ll be cross-platformed.

OhFudgeBars,

I wasn’t surprised by the length of the base game, or even by the presence of the post game, but by how much time the game spent ending. You beat the villain, that should be it, right? Lol no, you have to traverse the whole game world without vehicles and no network support. That’s it, right? Lol no, here’s a giant boss monster. That’s it, right? Lol no, here’s a shitload of cutscenes. Then the credits, then cut to black. That’s it, right? Lol no, more cutscenes, then one last delivery… and one last burst of cutscenes, some of which should have come earlier. That’s it, right? Lol almost, you have to watch the credits again, and then one blessedly short cutscene before the postgame, and then you can finally go to the main menu and quit.

I really liked the game, but good lord.

KeenFlame,

Classic kojima

lath, do games w What game surprised you with their length?

That Pathfinder Kingmaker was long as hell. Not sure i want to start the sequel until I’m good and ready for another pleasant slog.

mcforest,

I just finished it recently as well and also need an break until I start WotR.

TwoBeeSan,

Pleasant slog should be the tagline on every owlcat game.

Love them but they definitely love a long game and a fuck you puzzle here and there.

HipsterTenZero,
@HipsterTenZero@dormi.zone avatar

I still think owlcat is nuts for adapting not one, but two full APs to video game form. Those are each six books worth of TTRPG adventure and those can take years to complete

simple, do games w What game surprised you with their length?

Hollow Knight. Every time you think you’re nearing the end, there’s still a lot more. The true ending and optional DLCs add so much.

Artyom, (edited )

The final two dlc battles more than doubled my overall playtime. Absolutely brutal bosses.

simple,

I loved nightmare grimm, but didn’t bother with the Godmaster stuff tbh. The boss rush was way too much for me.

GTA IV actually, not even counting the two huge DLCs, just the base game alone.

Zahille7,

GTA in general has a long story. Which I honestly don’t mind. It means you get your money’s worth with the story alone. All the messing around is just secondary and an added bonus.

electric,

I was trying to think of one since I feel the opposite most of the time. This one did surprise me with the length. You think the end is approaching, but some more bullshit is ejected at Niko every time. The main quests takes a lot of detours (in a good way). There isn’t just one villain and you help/fight tons of different factions across the islands.

thisisbutaname, do games w What game surprised you with their length?

No matter how much I’ve played it, I don’t think I’ve ever got past half of the campaign of Sacred.

Now playing Elden Ring and even if I’m just starting out I’m constantly surprised by the amount of stuff in the world, most of which I only discovered the second or third time I visited the area it’s in.

(Lore nerd rant ahead, tl;dr: Ciri being the protag is 100% fine and I expected it but her being a full witcher is weird)

There’s exactly one somewhat valid complaint to be had here, and it’s that Ciri in the books explicitly didn’t go through the Trial of the Grasses (aka one of the main mutation processes that makes you a witcher or, as it often happens, just straight up kills you), so idk how they’ll justify her being able to use witcher potions and stuff now. And (also in the books) she has lost her access to magic at one point, so using witcher signs is strange too.

I can see her wanting to take the plunge and go through with the trials, but I’m also certain that Geralt wouldn’t want that for her bc of how much it fucks you up + most of the secrets of the trials have been lost.

I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait and see what explanation they come up with for her being a full witcher, but it better be good.

So, from lore perspective, I have no objections to her being the protag but I don’t love her being a full witcher. I liked what they did with her gameplay sections in W3, I hoped they’d have just expanded on that gameplay idea more.

MilitantAtheist,

Just because she does it in the trailer does not mean we start there in the game.

_cryptagion,

She’s wearing a feline medallion in the trailer, so it stands to reason she’s affiliated with the School of the Cat now. She probably went through their trials. And apparently CDPR has stated she is indeed a full witcher now.

Trantarius,

I agree it seems a little shoe-horned to make her a classical witcher. I hope it’s not just to give her the title, because she could easily be the protagonist, and/or have the job of being a witcher without the trial of the grasses. She was given the training and education of a witcher, and has magical powers of her own already. Receiving the trials would be a huge deal, narratively, to the characters, and to world building. I could easily see this being a fumbled corporate attempt at placating fans that wanted to see geralt, without any regard for the characters or world building. (Similar to “Rey Skywalker” having absolutely no business being a Skywalker). But that’s all speculation. If it’s treated as a major plot point, and not done just for the hell of it, it could still be good.

Rinn,

Yeah, exactly! I’m not married to the lore to the degree that I won’t give the devs a chance to explain how this came to be, but I’m worried it’s going to just be a cheap “well we needed to keep the signs and the potions as mechanics but Geralt is retired, fuck it, let’s say they found instructions on how to safely make more witchers in Vesemir’s cupboard somewhere.”

greedytacothief,

Yeah I’m not sure what her becoming a witcher adds to her story. She already has a lot going for her. Now if she became a badass witch like Granny weatherwax that’s the left turn I want to see.

Ciri used headology: The bandit lies down questioning how exactly disappointed his mother will be in him when ciri gets back from the coven.

Isn’t female witcher technically a witch? 🤔

kazerniel,
@kazerniel@lemmy.world avatar

that implies that men are witch-er than a female witch? :D

Allonzee,

I don’t think so.

I think being a Witcher is a distinct moniker In universe for the training/vocation of hunting magical monsters.

The usual male analogues in media for witch are wizards and/or warlocks

Kazumara,

In general English usage I think you may be right.

In the world of “The Witcher” (which is translated from Polish) there are both male and female mages with inborn abilities. Sometimes they are called sorcerers and sorceresses, sometimes they are called mages, sometimes they are called something related to their specialisation of magic, and sometimes wise women who do magic but didn’t go to the academy are called witches.

Witchers, however, are not mages. They are made from ordinary humans and are gene manipulated and highly trained to be monster hunters. They have some witcher powers that are related to runes, and they make potions that have side effects only they can survive thanks to their manipulated bodies. Witchers at birth do not have special potential. Though a lot of little witcher trainees die, so you could argue they are artificially selected in that way.

Ciri is kind of neither of those, but she has special abilities related to space and time manipulation. In the new trailer it seems she drinks a witcher potion, but from what we know she never underwent the manipulation that witchers did.

GunValkyrie,

Cdpr confirmed that she underwent the trials and is now a Witcher.

Maggoty,

Weren’t the mutagens for the trials destroyed in canon? It will be interesting to see how they get around this.

vaultdweller013,

Could be that she used her space time powers to find a more stable version. Or who knows all the crossovers could be canon and she grabbed some bullshit from monster hunter or some shit.

_cryptagion,

She might have done the trials with another school. In the trailer, she is wearing a feline witcher medallion, not a wolf one. I don’t think the lore ever mentions the School of the Cat having their mutagens destroyed.

vaultdweller013,

Im not really into the lore, more of a Warhammer fantasy guy I was just making a guess based off of the sheer number of crossovers. Seriously that shit is absurd, its like a reverse Scooby-Doo.

_cryptagion,

I’m not too far into the lore either, but the Witcher audiobooks jsut happened to be up next in my listening queue, so I guess I’ll find out about all that pretty soon.

_cryptagion,

The Wolf school had it’s mutagens destroyed, yes. But in the trailer, it appears Ciri is wearing a feline medallion, implying that she is somehow affiliated with the School of the Cat now.

Maggoty,

Ahhh okay. I missed that bit.

Kazumara,
Trantarius,

IIRC, the original polish “witcher” was made by taking word for “witch” and changing the grammatical gender to be masculine. Evidently this was not an existing word meaning “male witch”, and so was better translated as “witcher” (ie a made up word clearly derived from “witch”) instead of “witch” or “wizard”.
