Picked up Immortals of Aveum on sale. My friend recommended it and the combat is fun! But I dislike almost everything else. I intensely dislike the main character and that’s souring me to the rest of it. There’s a “it’s the end of the world” type war going on and while that can be an interesting setting I just can’t bring myself to want the protagonist to succeed. Early on in the game you have to go through some kind of trial to be chosen for some elite status that he doesn’t deserve. So you go through a fairly basic obstacle course with almost no fights to do and when you’re done he’s apparently the ONLY one amazing enough to actually finish it out of the group that were making attempts! OH MY GOD HE’S SO AMAZING! I actually alt-f4’d the game right then because I was truly hoping to complete it and be chastised for how long it took, and be told no I don’t have what it takes and hey kid, you’re pretty fucking arrogant and hard to get along with so we are busting you down to the worst rank we can. That’s is what I wanted for this character. And if that had happened and the story revolved around him learning to get along with people and ACTUALLY have to try and prove his worth I would have been so on board. But no, he gets rewarded for being insufferable. I wouldn’t wish for the villain to win in this world. But I certainly wouldn’t mind this protagonist losing.

But combat is fun when you get to do it. Cutscenes are unskippable and that’s not cool. Dialog is inconsequential so you can just bypass it when that comes up, or just pick the “let’s get on with it” option.

I would give this game a 4/10 right now. It would be an easy 6 or 7 if I could skip all story, dialog, and tedious platforming. It could also earn higher scores by having characters and a story worth NOT skipping, but let’s be reasonable. Just let me skip it pls.

Edit: I literally forgot that this game has a talent tree and crafting. But the crafting was going to cost me half of all the currency I’d collected up to the point I’d found the crafting machine to gain 1% damage or 1% more armour and I just scoffed because like no I am not going to grind that out. The game doesn’t feel challenging enough to need any extra damage or defence tbh even on the hardest difficulty.

The talent tree may be bugged for me? But the talents either aren’t working, or they work at numbers much less than advertised. Like using a type of ability to kill a mob is supposed to heal me for 10% of my max health. That’s a big enough number you should easily see it happen on the health bar. That talent is NOT working for my save. I chose another that increases reload time by 10% but I honestly can’t tell the difference before and after. I’d have to record it and count frames to actually tell if the talent works or not. So I stopped bothering with the talent tree because it felt largely, if not entirely, cosmetic. Maybe it’s just bugged for me though. I’ll get through the game without it if the game is worth getting through though. Little disappointed that there won’t be anything I can do to guide the character’s progress but c’est la vie.

I was "done" with Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, but a day later the first patch dropped, so I gotta go back to it.

Death Must Die was my replacement for DRG, but the game is a bit boring, so I'll wait for more patches. It's basically Hades but Vampire Survivors. So far there are five characters in the game, but four are very similar. The different spells or upgrades are also not really too interesting and barely change the gameplay, so most runs feel the same. I hope further updates can improve the game.

Then, I started both Horizon: Forbidden West and Dragons Dogma 2 on PC, but right now I'll stick with DD2. The game is basically what I remember DD1 being, but with a fresh coat of paint, for better or worse. Back when I played the first game, I had a great time for like 70 hours, but by the end, I never wanted to see the game again (and never played the DLC). Even though it's been eight years since then, I still feel a bit burned out, so seemingly so few changes don't really help. I started out as the mage and just recently switched to the sorcerer, but imma be honest, it's pretty boring. I'll give it a bit longer, since I barely got any spells right now. The archer and thief look more fun, so I might give these a shot, if the giga wizard doesn't improve things. I also gotta say, the Pawns are some of the most annoying NPCs in any video game ever. They spew one of their dozen different voice lines every 20 seconds, which is just awesome. You can mute their audio, but then you might also miss useful callouts like when they find a chest or info about enemies. The subtitles for their lines would of course still clutter the screen though.

UprisingVoltage,

Very fun game, I’ve been into it for a while and really enjoyed watching gameplay. Unfortunately i grew tired of it before the sales, and I ended up not buying it

@avater@lemmy.world avatar

so optimization is shit, denuvo is shit and the mtx are at least questionable but still the discussion is just “overblown” ? LoL…gamers these days.

Difficult for me to recommend since they're discontinued and likely pricey, but I still use a Steam Controller daily and find that with thorough bindings it can handle a surprising amount of PC only games, so I'd personally recommend that if it can be had at a fair price.

Zerthax,

Steam controller is fantastic, and unfortunately there’s really nothing else like it. I normally use a Logitech trackball, so the ability to use a touchpad like a trackball works well for me. I can’t think of any other controllers that use this instead of analog sticks.

I’ve actually stockpiled a few spares because I’m not sure what I would use as a replacement.

Same, I used one forever, wore the joystick down to the hard plastic underneath and it eventually ceased to turn on, I ended up incredibly lucky, some random redditor said he bought one that he never used and actually sent it to me free of charge and I still randomly go on steam and just thank the guy for letting me continue to use this controller.

I really hope they eventually release another or something

variants,

Do they make like TouchPad protectors that you can swap out?

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

I do believe there are touch pad covers you can get, for me though the joystick is what wore down, so I have an extra rubber cap over the top now

brian,

Mine has just started to have problems with the steam button and the right stick not registering presses. There really aren’t alternatives and I’m devastated. Probably going to have to buy used ones off ebay if I can’t fix it.

I'm hoping it's something like opening it up and cleaning it out, I'm wishing you luck on that one, if mine died it'd be like an end of an era

To address this differently, you’re making a rod for your own back by not putting the baby down once she’s asleep.

When my son was a baby I used to get home from work feed him and do the same as you but then it was a nightmare when I wanted to put him to bed, starfish arms and legs and hours of crying!

We did things differently with my daughter and never had this problem.

Good luck!

ive had success playing RTS games using an xbox controller mapped with joy2key (or steam input). you can also use a ps5 controller as a touchpad (ds4windows for mapping)

For a long time I’ve thought we just need a left hand joystick to pair with mouse. Could still have a thumb hat too. It would probably break my brain trying to mix all the different muscle memory maps though.

variants,

Yeah the thumb stick is what sold me on that azeron but now I’m wondering what my fingers are going to do if they aren’t on w a s d at least for fsrthest frontier it’s mostly wasd and mouse clicking so I guess I’ll just now use all the shortcut keys instead of moving the mouse to the build buttons and all that all the time

Non traditional input devices are fascinating, so thanks for posting your research. In your precise situation though, my advice would be to put down the baby.

haha yeah that probably is the best advice but shes so comfy just sleeping there

I use this Corsair lapboard on the couch. Much less exotic 😂 Unfortunately, it still requires two hands.

I need something like this. How do you like it?

mySFWaccount,

I like it a lot. It’s a nice sized keyboard, and the mouse surface is also more than big enough. I actually don’t even take the keyboard out, and just use the entire thing everyday.

variants,

Where do you store it when it’s not in use?

mySFWaccount,

I just keep the entire thing on my desk, like I wouldn’t normal keyboard.

Yo I don’t have much to add yet but this post is fucking interesting so I will be checking back

UngodlyAudrey, do gaming w Super Mario Maker 1 is now beaten!
!deleted4132 avatar

That’s so cool! The original Super Mario Maker is what made me get a Wii U, and I obsessed over that game for a couple years. I made a few levels that were fairly well regarded, too! Funnily enough, I’ve barely touched the second one.

chloyster,

That’s awesome! I unfortunately never got to play the original (unless you count the watered down 3ds version haha) but was super into the sequel for a good while. I love Mario maker a lot but more than anything it got me into smw rom hacks! Still trying to put together one of my own

Rentlar, do trains w How much does it cost to build a shortline railroad?

You know, if I had millions lying around I’d want to build or buy a small <10km line in rural buttfuck Saskatchewan and ride train cars around, just for myself and letting people that made it here use it for fun. I haven’t tried estimating how much that would cost.

Have a look at the West Coast Express, opened in 1995 from Vancouver BC to 43 miles out at an estimated cost of 40 to 80 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to 53.4 to 106.8 million of today’s USD. There were musings of it as far back as 1971, but it sounds like design started sometime after 1981 and construction started in 1994, finishing late 1995.

The price tag would include 5 engines and 5 sets of bilevel railcars, leasing tracks for CP and BNSF, building a handful of turnouts and sidings to hold the trains when out of service, build or contracting wash and maintenance facilities, maybe some small track and signalling upgrades along the route, and station facilities in 7 places.

Another example is the Rail Runner Express in New Mexico that runs 96.5 miles from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. The NM Governor Richardson announced it in August 2003. Construction began in October 2005. The first portion of service began in July 2006 and the full line went into service by December 2008. The cost to build the line was about 285 million USD total equivalent to about 438 million USD today. A operational deficit of 10 to 20 million USD annually was reported and criticized, but roads and bridges of that length cost as much to maintain anyway.

scrubbles,
!deleted6348 avatar

Very neat, 20-40mil is what I expected, makes sense. Thanks for the detailed reply! When I win the lottery maybe I try it…

safesyrup, do trains w How much does it cost to build a shortline railroad?

This hugely depends on many factors. What quality should the rail be? Do you transport freight at 30km/h or pasenger rail at 200 km/h? Is there electification involved? How is the soil along the tracks? How many trains of what type do you need? Do you want electric train protection and signaling? How nice do you want the train stops to be? Does it cross property of private individuals that you need to aquire?

I just want to say that this is not really a question that has an answer since it depends on so many factors. You also have to think about regulations for rail traffic. Building a rail line in your backyard isn‘t neary as expensive as one you use commercially because of safety standards you have to comply with, which is a good thing.

Oh and even if you could specify a project, i still would have no clue since i‘m not a project manager nor civil engineer, just interested in rail and trains :D
