The time and effort people put into these games never ceases to amaze me. This looks very impressive.

Blisterexe,

Thank you! The rig and surrounding infrastructure took 40-50 hours.

Why do people forget that in 2011 you could have bought a used copy for $19 and even less with a trade on of a game you already finished? The digital market is not the same.

ILikeBoobies,

They just need to introduce consumer protection legislation to force allowance of resale of digital items

Entropywins,

Holy shit I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time…it’s a great idea though!

kuberoot,

Careful, NFTs lie that way. /s

The issue is, it sounds like a complicated mess in terms of figuring out exact legislations, implementations, patent and licensing rights, who’s responsible for facilitating the actual resale, and ultimately it’s gonna support and legitimize shady resellers like g2a selling stolen copies.

ILikeBoobies,

It absolutely will

If you consider inflation, $60 in 2024 is worth almost the same as $50 in 2011.

carotte, do gaming w Gamer_IRL

this is why, if you won’t pirate, you should buy used 😎

…your games will still cost 60$, probably more, but hey the money’s not going to nintendo i guess

Eiri,

Why would used games cost more than new ones?

carotte,

because the nintendo games that people care about don’t really drop in price, or at least not significantly

if you’re lucky, you might find a popular switch game used for 50$ instead of 60$, but that’s about it

and if you’re going for retro games, it’s even worse. the retro games that people care about cost a fortune, pokemon is a good example

gabereal,

Because that’s the price that (most) customers are willing to pay for them 🤷

But, if you account for inflation (using the BLS website ), $50 in Jan of 2011 is equal to a little over $70 today, so a $60 used game is kind-of a discount?

lime, do games w In the era of remakes and remasters, what niche game would you like to see receive the treatment?
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

Elite 2: Frontier.

elite dangerous is very close but it doesn’t really capture the seamlessness you get from not having a landing mode or frame shifting. pioneer spaceship sim is a remake in the truest sense of the word, but a remaster would fix the ui issues the original had rather than just rolling with them.

Moah,
@Moah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Dangerous was originally supposed to be single player only, then they got so much money they promised to add the mp… And long after the ks finished they switched to online only. I was really pissed off. There’s always X I guess

lime,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

no it wasn’t. i backed the kickstarter. it was always an online game, it just had “solo” and “private” modes. and they didn’t get “so much money”, they got like 120% of their target. they were up against the star citizen kickstarter and that got all the hype.

my main issue with ED is that they focused on building a modern Elite rather than a modern Elite 4. Building upon the ideas of Frontier: First Encounters would have made a very different game.

X is more like Freelancer meets Euro Truck Simulator, in my experience.

Moah,
@Moah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I might be misremembering some details, but I kick-started the game too and remember feeling betrayed by Frontier when they announced the game would be online only.

lime,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

i definitely remember being excited for the possibility to play single player but telling my friends that we could play together if it succeeded. not that the online experience differs significantly from the single player…

Agreed. I remember there being some controversy around including figures in the game like Poundmaker, whose major mark in history was advocating against the colonial practices his people were submitted to.

Forcing anti-colonial figures to compete in the colonial model of success just doesn’t seem right.

Eat my ENTIRE ASS, Nintendo.

fartsparkles,

Yup. I’ve been boycotting Nintendo and EA for the past twenty years. EA due to the destruction of countless talented studios (Origin, Bullfrog, Westwood, Pandemic) and Nintendo when they were caught by the EU doing anti-competitive price fixing (which they still seem to be doing today).

I have missed out on nothing. A game is just a game; a piece of multimedia content to entertain. There are countless astonishing games out there; missing out on a few doesn’t harm you.

People really need to learn to vote with their wallets. And no, I don’t think sailing the high seas and yarharhar legal questionability is acceptable. You don’t need to play the game. There is nothing that important you’re missing out on for the “cultural zeitgeist”.

Piracy still increases the fandom and increases sales (contrary to what IP owners will tell you). So piracy is still supporting these organisations and feeding into their success.

Vote with your wallets. Don’t support business practices and businesses you don’t believe in. Give your time and money to those that deserve it.

Isn’t it crazy that you have to murder and steal in a game like GTA V??? Wouldn’t the game be so much better if Franklin just got a regular 9-5 and you spent the entire game either sitting in traffic or sitting in a cubicle?

I said that I understand that some people want to act unethically in games as a form of escapism for that you can’t do in real life, and that’s fine. But there should be ethical options for people who do want to build an ethical civilisation, as that also makes it more realistic in many ways, not all real civilisations have to start off with a feudal system and slowly progress in exactly the way the tech and civic trees work in civ6.
