HerrVorragend, do games w The PlayStation 2

The PS2 is the best Sony system to me.

Back when it came out, it was so much better than everything else up to this point.

This, coupled with many games that started fanchises and/or were highly stylish and creative, and had new Equipment (GuitarHero, SingStar, EyeToy) make it the GOAT.

Jak & Daxter/Ratcher & Clank trilogy were goated. I know a lot of people throw around “they don’t make them like they used to anymore” but in term of those two franchises on the PS2, they really don’t.

As an aside, I picked up the newest Ratchet & Clank on PC and was disappointed. They tried making it so much more cinematic and story-focused with tons of scripted scenes. Also it lacked any of the satirical humor the original 3 had.

MamboGator,
@MamboGator@lemmy.world avatar

I could never get into the Ratchet and Clank games, except for Deadlocked which I know is generally disliked by fans. I was really into arena shooters at the time.

I’ve tried a bunch of the others and they are definitely good, but not my kind of game.

I still love the aesthetic a lot of PS2 games have, with smooth, bright textures instead of a lot of detail that gets stretched and blurry at low resolutions. The way metal surfaces look in MGS2 and Zone of the Enders is really nice.

But then there are games like Silent Hill 2 & 3 that use a lot of detail in the low resolution textures to create a grimy or rusted look. Those games really benefited from working within the limitations of the system, like the fog to reduce draw distance.

AceFuzzLord, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

Analog stick. Most of the time I end up finding that the dpad on my 360 controller doesn’t feel as good to me compared to as an analog stick. That, and the majority of games I used to play growing up used analog stick for movement, so it’s engrained in me.

EmpiricalFlock,
@EmpiricalFlock@beehaw.org avatar

Part of the issue there is actually the 360 controller, from my experience. It has one of the worst D-pads ever made. That said, platformers and fighting games are typically the only ones I use a D-pad on anyway, so if you don’t play those you’d likely never use it.

Dpad for precise timing (like movement). Analogue for precise looking (like aiming).

If I could use the dpad to move in a souls game (especially the ones with movement based combos) I would. But I’d still want the analogue stick for the camera.

monoboy, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

Depends on the game

A good example is the Ori games compared to Hollow Knight. Ori moves at a different speed depending how much you push the thumb stick so it feels more precise to use them. In Hollow Knight you move the same speed with the thumb stick no matter how little it is pressed so the d-pad feels better.

Empricorn, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

It’s all about timing, just like face buttons. Platforming or fighting games, you gotta have that instant response. Aiming or acceleration needs the precision of analog. So, “depends on the game” is my hot take…

Zozano,

I realised all these years later that so many games from my childhood had the issue of “floaty characters”.

Mario 64 felt so good because you could run at full speed, snap the alalog stick back and jump, and Mario would pivot on a bees dick and launch himself at your face.

Empricorn, (edited )

You are a poet. But seriously, you’re so right. I don’t even like the floaty fighters in Smash Bros!

saigot, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

I prefer Dpad for platforming and top down as being able to move precisely diagonal is more important than speed control, plus the analogue stick wears out quicker and dpad allows switching directions faster. Analogue for driving and therpy gamess

DmMacniel, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

Depends on the game really. If there is a need for fine precision be it movement, pointing or aiming an analog Stick can’t be beat (the latter even enhanced by gyro) if its a 2D game its gotta be a dpad.

Empricorn, (edited )

I misread that as “enhanced by Spyro”. And yeah, most things are…

DmMacniel,

True everything would be better with that little dragon.

terzalo, (edited ) do gaming w Anybody know of games similar to Dito Seregin's 'Escape Pod'?

Hi, I’m Dito, I made the game!

Check out ΔV: Rings of Saturn! It’s a slower-paced simulation game, and it goes all the way to explore the idea of 2D spaceships with Newtonian physics in an asteroid field (or rather a ring system).

I also recommend Heat Signature, it’s one of my favorite games! It’s only partially about flying spaceships, but I was directly inspired by the pod controls in it.

Edit: I’ll also add Flywrench to this, it’s a tough and satisfying action game about maneuvering through multi-colored obstacles that you can phase through by switching your ship’s polarity in time.

boomer, do gaming w Why do mobile games suck nowadays?

“Nowadays” ? They’re just getting good! Did you mean to say, “why are mobile games that suck, so popular” ? It’s because they’re accessible and usually F2P .

sleepybisexual,

Take angry birds for an example,

It used to be a good game, you had your level, Maine an optional micro transaction.

Now the modern angry birds is an ad riddled mess

boomer,

Oh yeah. I get it. I guess that’s why I stopped playing those long ago 🙂

I’m a huge mobile gamer though. It’s amazing what we can play on our phones with an xbox controller. It’s better than the pc experience for me because I can map the controller how I want to and am not stuck with the defaults.

Tons of amazing games coming this year. ZZZ wuthering waves Azur Promelia Etc.

yuri,

You can remap controllers on pc though, like at a system level if you use steam. I remember having to go through a whole rigamarole to customize controls for a mobile game that didn’t support controller, I had to use a weird third party tool that interpreted the controller input as virtual screen touches. It almost kinda worked lmao

boomer,

I remember way back trying to play genshin on my pc and it wouldnt let me map the right button trigger to attack , like i like it and I was like, i’m just going back to mobile.

yuri,

I forget that games like genshin exist lol

Blubber28, do games w Sprocket: Tank Design is such a fun game!

While it does indeed kind of smell like an ad, keep in mind this is not some triple-A bullshit. It’s made by a single dev and has a heavily involved community on reddit and discord where competitions are hosted and suggestions are made. Regardless of tankies reputation, that kind of behaviour is not tolerated in either of those communities. I’ve been playing it on and off and have over 500 hours into it by now. It is a very niche game, but for those that like tanks and military games in general, it is a real gem.

SupraMario,

Does it have MP? Or is it SP vs bots?

Blubber28,

It is currently singleplayer vs bots and the scenarios are admittedly limited. However, again, single dev (at the moment). Multiplayer is on the roadmap far in the future and will likely not really be pvp as that introduces challenges for balancing.

For now though, the designer is very free in what it lets you do for the most part and has a lot of options.

If you’re on the fence, I would recommend looking up some videos on youtube that showcase the game’s capabilities. Make sure to pick a decently recent one (ergo past half year or so).

SupraMario,

If the dev got this working with MP, hell even just coop vs like a horde of tanks, with your friends, it would be awesome. Right now it looks like a lot of fun but won’t last to long for me. I’ll have to keep an eye on it.

redcalcium,

Hmm, what do you mean when a tank game has a tankies reputation?

jarfil, do gaming w Interactive Loading Screens - High Hell

The best loading screen is: none.

Load levels in chunks, preload the first chunk of the next level before the player reaches the end of the previous one, and either have a smooth transition, or at most put a skippable cutscene.

Loading screens are for poorly developed games.

Megaman_EXE, do gaming w What is your favourite game console?

This is a really hard question for me to answer. So I’m going to go with a bit of a catch-all.

I really like the GBA. But the DS can play DS and GBA titles. But the 3DS is great too and can play all 3 and then some.

I guess the 3DS. There’s just so much that can be packed into it. I haven’t played mine in a while. I wish it was easier to install a capture card in them. There was something special about the games from the GBA to 3DS. The limitations of the hardware had developers experimenting, and we ended up with so many interesting titles. If you factor in the couple n64 games ported over to the 3DS, it’s just so much nostalgia in one handheld.

If I had to go with a runner-up, I think it would be my series X. Being able to play so many backward compatible games is also super nice.

If I truly had to pick single consoles only, with only the games designed for that specific console. I would probably go with the 3ds and the xbox 360. The 3DO or Dreamcast would come after as they had so many unique titles.

I never got to play the ps1, ps2, or psp and vita. So I’ve been curious what I’ve been missing out on over the years.

sleepybisexual,

You could always emualtr them. Psp is a good system

Megaman_EXE,

Playstation and psp emulation is not something I’ve looked into much. I’ll have to do some digging!

sleepybisexual,

Ppsspp is good,

Vimm.net has most of the ROMs. For PSP tekken dr is a very good game. Especially with resolution upscale
