HawlSera, (edited ) do games w Which games do you dislike, but the rest of the world loves them?

The Witcher 3 is just… so god damn boring, it doesn’t help that weapons break too easily, yet the oppurutunities to get gold are so few that you’ll do several sidequests worth of monster genocide, sell EVERYTHING you own, and just barely afford to fix your weapons… It got so bad I had to hack my save to bypass the constant scrunging about for repairs… then I realized the story is so complicated that you NEED to play the other two games to understand what’s going on

I went back and played Witcher 2, and found it to be vastly superior, far more fun, far more immersive, and just an all around better time

I have been warned never to touch Witcher 1

the Netflix series was pretty good, though I only saw the first season

generic_rock,

Definitely recommend reading/listening to the books. Probably the best way to experience the Witcher overall.

I do love both the Witcher 2 and 3 though, few games make me feel as immersed in their world.

AMDIsOurLord,

Witcher 1 is a very hardcore RPG designed in the style of the old bygone era of RPG games, so depending on your interest in classic gaming you might not even understand what the fuck the game is even asking of you

Also there is pretty much no handholding so some quests are a removed

My recommendation for Witcher 3 is to not buy weapons, exploration and combat should net you good gear to carry you

DarkMetatron,

I can’t stand Witcher 3 but played Witcher 1 not long ago and I really loved it. It is very oldcore and the controls are a b***h sometimes but it is a really great game with a great story. I hope Witcher 2 is as good too, it is on my next to play list very high.

@1simpletailer@startrek.website avatar

Witcher 2 is the most underrated entry in the series, and has by far the most interesting story to tell. I’m shocked you find 3’s story complicated as its pretty simplistic in comparison. Yeah it has more characters from the books involved, but the game tells you pretty much everything you need to know about all of them. Overall I enjoyed 3, but as a followup to Witcher 2 its pretty disappointing story-wise. Both games have shit combat, so if you’re not invested in the story/world they aren’t worth playing.

HawlSera,

I think the explanations are the problem, it’s overloading me with information… I feel like every cutscene is a wall of text that I’m barely able to follow… Witcher 2 felt like I was learning about the world in a more natural way

1simpletailer, (edited )
@1simpletailer@startrek.website avatar

I see what you mean and can get down with that. The writing in 2 is in general much tighter then 3. It’s a shame that compared to 3 relatively few people have played it.

Personal opinions aside as an open world RPG by itself Witcher 3 is pretty good, it’s was a breakout success and remains a popular game for good reason. As a follow-up to Witcher 2 though it’s pretty disappointing. Switching over to an open world does the storys pacing and stakes no favors, and it feels like CDPR is limited by following up the book series and trying to utilize its characters. As evidenced by Witcher 2 and the Hearts of Stone expansion for 3, it seems like their writers are much more comfortable writing their own original stories and characters. 3’s main storyline doesn’t introduce anyone nearly as interesting as Letho, Roach, and Iorveth, except for maybe the Baron, who like the others is an original character.

Additionally everything 2 spends time building up for 3 has pretty disappointing payoffs. The Northern Realms politics were a focus for 2, in 3 they are overly simplistic and somewhat nonsensical. Radovid is depicted as a cunning, competent, and ruthless king in 2, but goes blubbering mad off-screen between games. The Wild Hunt is barely a presence in the games storyline despite being it’s namesake and Eredin is a flat and boring antagonist. I understand why Witcher 3 is so popular, but as someone who was a big fan of 2 and was incredibly hyped for it, I found it to be incredibly underwhelming.

CoconutKnight,

Funny, I was told to stay the fuck away from Witcher 2, but played Witcher 1. xD Witcher 1 has some odd controls (from a modern perspective) but an engaging story which actually forced me to stop playing on my first playthrough because I just couldn’t make the choice between pest and cholera. Of course I eventually dipped my toes in Witcher 2, but the 3rd one has spoiled me so damn hard with its fancy graphics, controller support and familiar controls, that it just didn’t click.

haui_lemmy,

I played all three, watched the series and am in the process of reading though the 8 or so books.

The first witcher, as was mentioned, is very old and a little clunky for todays standards but it was great fun. I can neither understand why you liked the 2nd one - which I found bland and forgettable - nor the dislike for the third one, which was like 3 games in one imo.

I guess if you really like walking/riding a horse and have the hardware to crank it up to eleven, the third one is awesome, otherwise probably not.

Windward is pretty fun and under the radar.

Sid Meier’s “Pirates!” is old as hell but still a great game.

HeavyRaptor,

Pirates! is amazing

  • Capturing ships to make your own fleet
  • Searching for lost treasure
  • Many different ships and upgrades to choose from (go war canoe)
  • Sword fighting
  • Wooing governor’s daughters (somewhat similar in gameplay to sword fighting)
  • (mediocre) stealth and land battles
  • Free your family from the grasp of Baron Raymondo (Evil!)
  • Battle famous pirates and take their ships
Chee_Koala,

Another one for Sid Meier’s pirates, it was great and aged decently.

Mithre,

Even the remake of Pirates! is fantastic.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. Also, the sea battles in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey are fantastic.

etchinghillside,

Yup - Black Flag - half tempted to even purchase the remaster if that actually comes to fruition.

neuropean,

I’d like a spin-off. Less land stuff and more sea stuff. Instead of the ‘armada’ thing, how about being able to buy or capture larger ships for personal use? Or being able to directly control 2-3 ships? Or fight large scale coordinated naval battles?

That concept has so much more potential and I wish somebody would do more with it.

MrScottyTay,

They’ve been trying with skull and bones but it’s both in development hell, been delayed multiple times and even changed play styles over the years. I’m not hopeful sadly.

LunchEnjoyer,
@LunchEnjoyer@lemmy.world avatar

And somehow Skull and Bones is coming out this month! Not getting it (cos its Ubisoft) but excited to see how the game will be taken in by the players, if at all…

XeroxCool,

I played AC:Oddyseey in 2021 and am currently playing through AC4:BF now for the first time. I’ve been wondering if the Ody ship mechanic was as great as I remember of if it was just a nostalgic feeling having it for the first time in the tail of Origins and throughout Odyssey. Sounds like it was actually great. Not-true-to-AC argument aside, Ody was an excellent game as someone who started on Unity.

I do recommend AC4: Black Flag as a pirate game. It does take a fair amount of somewhat normal AC gameplay (and Ubisoft side quest trinket distractions) to get enough upgrades to the ship to feel like a real pirate of the Caribbean and not just a poop deck swabber, but my ship is nearly maxed at ~75% story completion. I make sure my wanted level stays maxed so the pirate hunters chase me in level 60 men’o’war every time it loads me at sea. Two types of side cannons, forward chain cannons, rear fire barrel mines, long range mortars, front ram, and the option to board disabled ships for swashbuckler combat to gain different rewards. Plus a little tabletop smuggling across the Atlantic with turn-based sprite battles for a laughably insignificant amount of money compared to the work it takes to capture proficient ships.

Knuk,

Ayy I worked on the Odyssey ships, I’m glad you enjoyed playing with them :D

Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) is my favourite pirate game. No, it’s nothing like what you think a licensed tie in game from 2003 would be like.

It’s a real oddity. This was made by a Russian studio and originally meant to be a sequel to their previous age of sail game, Sea Dogs. In Russia it was still marketed as a sequel, without the Pirates of the Carribean branding. It has basically nothing to do with the movies in reality. I have no idea how or why this ended up being a tie in.

I don’t really have a short hand for describing the genre. It most reminds me of space sims - where you control a vessel which you can replace, has an economy/trade system, management mechanics, factional reputation systems and an open world. It’s not a simplified as Freelancer, but not a spreadsheet game like the X series.

The sailing is great, a happy medium between completely arcade stuff where you just point your ship where you want to go and sims. Wind and weather play an important role without being tedious or overwhelming.

You also control a character for ship environments, like boarding, and exploring towns and islands (with swashbuckling combat, of course). It’s pretty bare bones but the variety is appreciated. There are lite-RPG dialogue/story mechanics and quests, though I do not want to give the impression this narrative heavy game. It’s an RPG style that used to be relatively common but not so much anymore.

But the real highlight is the New Horizons mod which greatly overhauls the game. It’s been developed for almost 20 years. I don’t recommend playing the vanilla game - I enjoyed it at the time, but it’s just an inferior experience to the mod.

Best yet, it’s free. The game is abandonware.

Genshin Impact is my main game, I prefer the really polished open world combat, and down to earth stories with an amazing emphasis on being culturally accurate.

Also the game literally has no grind, so idk wtf the other user is saying. 95% of the content is done non-repeatable. Character’s are time gated by an energy system, but there game is incredibly easy and it’s nothing worth worrying about.

TwilightVulpine,

Also the game literally has no grind

My hundreds of hours farming level up materials and artifacts would beg to disagree.

moon,

Damn you want to hook me up with some of that unlimited resin you have? That runs out in 5 minutes for me!

TwilightVulpine,

Good for you running Domains and Ley Line Blossoms 4 to 8 times a day in 5 minutes. But if you are doing that, then you definitely put a lot of time into farming artifacts already. I wish I could simply run it a couple times per character and be kitted out for good, but they gotta pile up random stats over random stats to get people farming forever.

moon,

5 mins a day is a lot? There just be a big disconnect here, because like you said, this same act is taking you hundreds of hours.

TwilightVulpine,

I'm saying it does take me significantly more than 5 minutes, and that's not even counting getting around the map or Daily Commissions or regular events that also take time, which one might want to do if they want more characters and weapons without paying.

I'm also saying that to have your characters so optimized that it only takes you 5 minutes now, it means you likely grinded much more than 5 minutes a day for a long time, because fast clear times aren't trivial to get, and in this game skilfull play doesn't make up for raw stat numbers as far as clear time goes.

I am saying that solely counting daily grind, my playtime has surpassed hundreds of hours, and this is not hyperbole. I have played for more than a year, so over time even short daily playtime can ammount to that, but lets not downplay how many times you need to run the same XP Leylines, the same Talent Book Domains, the same Artifact Domains, the same Bosses over and over to gather materials to get new characters up to speed with the rest of your team, meaning, usable in gameplay.

God, if I didn't like the game's story so much I'd probably have dropped already from how repetitive and tiresome the grind gets. Like many live service games, it's not even like this is earned naturally by playing however you want, no, you need to go out of your way to grind the same repetitive challenges. Maybe you know games that are even more griindy and tiresome... but I wouldn't exactly say that this means Genshin is free from grind. Not at all.

rothaine,

100% agree. Genshin is grindy AF

xkforce, do games w Recommendations for Pirate Games?

Assassains creed black flag has such a good pirating mechanic they tried making an entire game focusing on it.

cyberpunk007,

But Ubisoft…right?

XeroxCool,

The mechanic was developed for AC3 so I’d say they successfully made an entire 4th game revolving around it

This may be truth but I down voted because addiction and gaming were thrown into the same pot. You have to differentiate this topics a little… It’s the same like: car drivers don’t give a crap about the environment and drive like a*holes or people interested in football are drunken hooligans…

Too much of something is literally almost bad for a person.
