Still a fan of the player mocking in The Stanley Parable around achievements.

One example has the narrator taking you on a chain of complaints starting with “…Are you seriously just doing this for the achievement??”

AnarchistArtificer,

Yeah, that kind of mocking is a direct attack at me, and I honestly like it because I feel like my weird achievement hunting is definitely mockable (especially because I already know how ridiculous I am and thus will not change in this respect)

Garibaldee, do games w Nintendo Confirms Backwards Compatibility for Switch Successor!
@Garibaldee@lemm.ee avatar

I’m guessing this is from consumer pressure, until the Switch people definitely bought more physical copies of games and the minority of people got digital versions of DS/Wii-U games, but now so many people are using nintendo online and buying virtual copies people probably would not buy the next console if they had to buy the games they liked again.

variants,

probably they just dont want to make new games and just want to keep expanding switch online, but still want to sell consoles as well

Blackmist,

I mean, Nintendo have often been fairly good with back compatibility.

If the architecture and form factor of physical media isn’t really changing, there’s not a lot of need to block older games from running.

They’re already on ARM, and there’s not much better for mobile gaming and GPUs have been fairly similar for a long time now.

The more interesting question is: will the Switch games get a performance boost on Switch 2? And it’s probably going to depend on the game. I’d imagine they’ll test a lot of the more popular titles, and anything with issues just gets it disabled until the developer patches it. It’d be nice to play TotK at a decent frame rate. Impressive as it is, it certainly chugs.

I would love to say this is going to flop, but in the States people pay $1k for telephones and $600+ for consoles and then pay a monthly fee to then use those devices.

Horizon Zero Dawn is my all time favorite game (a remastered version is coming out next week so might be a great time to jump in). Celeste is a 2D platformer and also really great. Been having fun with Zelda ToTK and Astrobot as well.

fulg,

I loved HZD so much on PS4, it is a great world, really good sci-fi story and awesome character progression. It feels so good to easily take down machines that you struggle with at the beginning, it never gets old to tear off parts and weapons to use against them. The DLC for it was a great addition.

Needless to say I jumped into Horizon Forbidden West as soon as it was released, and it did not live up to my expectations! The second go around everything feels so forced, I gave up midway through.

Solid recommendations throughout this thread…

targetx,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Well said! And now on PS5 it plays so great at a smooth 60 fps, amazing stuff. I frequently start the game just to wander around and fight the machines. At ultra hard it can still be quite challenging even after all these hours.

The remaster seems to be really well done as well according to early reviews, so looking forward to putting even more hours into it :-) hope they made the inventory management better as that is basically my only issue with the original.

I do agree the first has the better vibe and story but I think you’d still enjoy finishing Forbidden West and the Burning Shores DLC. The ending was interesting and if you stopped halfway through you might not even have seen some of the new enemies yet! How far did you get?

fulg,

Hey! I wanted to tell you that I came back to HFW after all due to your comment. I had logged 48 hours on it before I left, but was only 30% complete according to the PS5 dashboard.

I found that I liked the atmosphere, but it is definitely a slow game most of the time. So much filler dialogue between characters, puzzles are instantly spoiled by Aloy talking to herself way too soon before you’ve had a chance to work through them (God of War Ragnarok is also guilty of this).

And then there is the fact that Aloy will constantly put her life at risk at the slightest opportunity given by a stranger, even though story-wise she is literally the only one who can fix the Earth.

That being said I play the game in a particular way, I go through all missions (main or side) in the order of their level, and I tend to prefer the stealth approach to most fights. So this does slow down the game quite a bit. I think I am halfway through?

The overall vibe is really nice though, I might make it to the end this time. I’ve even put Burning Shores on my wish list!

Cheers!

targetx,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Hey thanks for the response! Glad to hear it :) definitely agree about the puzzles being spoiled by Aloy, really weird how they implemented that without even an option to turn it off. I also thought it was strange how she gladly risks her life with the amount of stuff she’s trying to handle already, but it does make for a more interesting game I think. Overall the side quests are a bit more interesting and fleshed out than in zero dawn. Also the stash is a really welcome addition compared to the first one.

I think we play in a similar way, at least on a first playthrough I play like that. I also play the game without fast travel but that’s not for everyone :) hope you make it to the end! It definitely has me excited for Horizon 3.

I got the Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster last week as well, it’s really well done for a remaster and I’m enjoying a full new playthrough. On the way to Meridian now.

fulg,

I need to hunt down HZD out of storage, looks like the disc must be in the drive to get the upgrade pricing for the remaster.

No fast travel, now that is some dedication :) I know it usually pays off to walk everywhere especially in the beginning (at the very least you pick up resources that you’ll need anyway), but sometimes I just don’t want to.

caut_R, do games w I don't think it's possible for me to complete this Steam achievement

Some games just put in bs achievements like these to tempt people who care about that to cheat or waste their time to a degree that would make anyone shake their head.

I think achievements should be a framework that ensures the player has the ability to verify whether they have seen all the content the game has to offer (think secrets or easter eggs, hard to find sidequests) and as such had the full experience. You got platinum? You’ve seen it all, thanks for playing, see you in the next one! They shouldn‘t be frustrating or disrespectful to the players time.

Arguably even difficulty achievements aren‘t great in terms of accessibility, although I do understand that those are quite literally „achievements.“

This is just my own stance on them.

lorty,
@lorty@lemmy.ml avatar

No one is forced to do achievements to enjoy a game. I understand achievement hunting, but since they can easily be cheated (on steam at least) it really is only a personal goal. If you are not enjoying one just forget about it.

If you were traveling at a constant 100 mph, it would take you 249 hours to travel around the circumference of the Earth, and 2,389 hours to reach the Moon. If the distances are actually accurate then these achievements should be nigh on impossible to get in any reasonable amount of time. That now 0.2% of players have them means the distances aren’t accurate, that they used an achievement unlocker, cheated in-game, or have a fuckton of playtime.

Voroxpete,

Never underestimate the “fuckton of playtime” option. Some people just get really into a game.

caut_R, do games w Fields of Mistria review: A boring, soulless Stardew reskin

Everyone can have their own opinion, but I also encourage everyone to form their own opinion.

In my book the game‘s a fantastic 7/10 cozy game. I don‘t think the game‘s passionless at all. Every Friday evening I‘m in the bar checking what the townfolk is up to and the content is already enough for me to be satisfied for the ten-ish bucks I‘ve paid, the promise of future content is just the cherry on top.

I wouldn‘t recommend this over SDV to someone who hasn‘t played SDV yet, but for someone who‘s done with it, I‘d recommend giving Mistria a shot. Not every game has to be a 200 hours timesink for me, and an hour in Mistria before bed is really just cute, fun, and relaxing - a great cozy game.

100 hours for only 0.1%. I don’t particularly like achievements anyway but these ones are just stupid.

shadowedcross,
@shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works avatar

That 0.1% is the number of players who have the achievement, not OP’s completion progress. But it’s also probably very small.

B0NK3RS,
@B0NK3RS@lemmy.world avatar

My mistake then. I guess that shows how uninterested in achievements I am…

SolarMonkey,

That’s like one of the super grindy JRPG titles I have (100 hours or so to get through the story). To get all the achievements, you’d have to play through an absolute minimum of 9 times, because you need to kill the end boss without taking damage on each difficulty level, and they unlock as you go. But you’d actually be grinding bosses for ages trying to get them without taking damage…

The game was ok, but I honestly can’t see wanting to play it twice let alone 9 times… there’s definitely a reason almost nobody has those achievements…

simple, do games w Anyone checking out Brighter Shores?

I played it for 90 minutes now and I think it’s OK. It feels like an MMO that came out 20 years ago, whether that’s good or bad depends on you. Lots of grinding, running back and forth, and doing fetch quests.

Some parts of the game are really nice, I love how streamlined everything is and how the map tells you exactly which resources can be found where. The game overall is very, very polished for a smaller indie MMO. That said, it feels overly simple and grindy. The first quest literally starts by telling you to come back when you’re level 60, which is insane. The map is also very limited and not really open world, it’s like a bunch of interconnected rooms.

The worst part is one I didn’t even face yet, but everybody is saying that your character resets upon entering a new zone. That means all your skills reset back to level 1 and you don’t carry over any armor or weapons or anything like that upon finishing one section of the game. The entire game is episodic, so you could grind a hundred levels in combat only to walk into episode 2 and start all over. That sounds bizarre to me. Not sure if I’ll play any further.

vasus,

They don’t reset, they just don’t carry over, also your gear is severely debuffed. If you come back to the previous episode you’ll still have the levels in that episode’s skills.

simple,

Yeah, but that’s a bizarre decision. What’s the point of grinding combat if none of it carries over to the rest of the game? What’s the point in going back to the starter area to grind again?

jollybarr,

Skills not carrying over (as another commentor said happens, not actually being lost), that is so weird to me. I’d be interested in getting to that point myself to understand it, but I’ve never heard of an MMO touching your skills as you progress through zones/episodes. If they provide some information on why they do this I would definitely be interested in why they went that route. 🤔

Is there an in-game tracker for how much farther to go? If not you might be able to keep track here completionist.me/steam/app/2884590 . As an avid achievement hunter I don’t see a problem with achievements like this in most cases there are probably ways to “cheese” them I don’t know about this game however. (Steam guides can be useful for finding what other players have used)

Edit: looks like there are no guides for this game I tried to look on mobile so disregard that haha

HumbleFlamingo, do gaming w My Experience With The ROG Ally Z1E (Windows/Bazzite)

I like the idea of Bazzite, but the release cycle is rough for me. I’m running it on my HTPC, a thing i just want to work, and it feels like half the time I sit down to use it, some update broke something with Jellyfin. Rolling back updates is pretty easy, but that’s 5 or 10 minutes of futzing isn’t great. I’ll be switching back to mint sometime soon.

I think it will improve with time, and HTPC isn’t 100% their jam, and Jellyfin is a flat pack… so my use case isn’t ideal.

xavier666,

If I had to a host a HTPC, it would be with Docker as it’s a more reliable way to maintain a service.

HumbleFlamingo,

I mean the computer that connects to the TV. The file server and jellyfin server are virtualized on a different server.
