Physics based rendering. Basically good texture shaders that work like materials work in the real world. Since that has been developed artists working with computer graphics in movies and games more or less don’t have to worry about making something look realistic.

Every texture has values for color, reflectivity, subsurface scattering, fresnel, roughness and probably a ton more values I forgot. That gives you everything real light does when hitting a surface.

I think Wreck it Ralph was one of the first movies to use the techniques. I remember reading something to that effect alongside tutorials on how to get PBR into Blender. I think it took very little time for PBR to get into basically every graphics software. And nowadays when you buy textures they all come with different textures to set the correct values for PBR.

Thunderstorms in Baldur’s Gate (the old ones) could outright kill you. Scary stuff.

It’s still there. But I never tried it and it probably won’t work with DRMed games.

Baldur’s Gate 2

Sadly I just can’t read so much at the moment.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Yeah, it really needs a Revival.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I’d say Eternal actually fits the bill more. Once you get all the mechanics down every encounter becomes this deadly ballet of high speed chess where you really can enter a flow state of just reacting and acting.

2016 can be like that but it’s a little bit more forgiving, funnily enough managing to keep your brain more in the foreground.

Depending on your definition of cozy 2016 could win, because it is not as taxing as Eternal. At least I could manage 2016 much better than Eternal with my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But if you manage to stick with Eternal I think it’s more conducive to get you into a meditative state.

No remake. No One Lives Forever Revival is a site offering it for download with patches for Windows 10 and Widescreen.

Nice! Recently started playing the first one again.

Hope they manage to include a proper VR mode this time. The Mother VR mod is great but unfortunately it cannot work on Linux.

I remember being stuck at one point as a kid. Eventually I gave in and ordered the official hint book. Mind you, that meant physically mailing a paper and I guess the money to the company and then waiting several weeks for the reply.

I finished the game two days before the book arrived (use physics book with horse). But it was still worth it. The book also contained a novelization of the story written by Bernard. Title: My Physics Adventure or It’s Never Too Late To Stop Polution So Let’s Start Yesterday

Had a CyberMaxx VR headset back in the days. It had a whopping resolution of 505x230 per eye at a combined 60 Hz (so each eye only got 30 Hz). Headtracking worked with 3 degrees of freedom. The included mouse driver for DOS made the head tracking available for every DOS game even if it didn’t have support. It came with Tekwar and a Flight Unlimited demo I never could get to run.

Some games worked with stereoscopic 3D. That was about the only really awesome thing about the headset. But the 30 Hz displays made sure that you could only play for a short while anyways. Descent was nausea inducing on its own. But in VR it was a guaranteed pukefest.

Thinking about playing with the headset was always much better than actually doing it. I’d pull it out every few years and then put it back into storage. Last I heard it died at my brother’s.

I still regret that I didn’t find an appropriate figure without pants for Diarrhea 4. Not to mention it will probably be years until I can find the energy to implement aliens you can shart on.

The Cradle level in Thief 3 will forever and always be the scariest experience I’ve ever had in any video game, including horror games. It elevated an otherwise mediocre game to be a worthy entry besides the first two games.

bjoern_tantau,

stopkillinggames.com

This game could be a great resource about what not to do.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Yeah, they did handle it correctly. All things considered. Even in an utopian future where the stopkillinggames.com campaign is successful. Personally I would still prefer to keep all games alive.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

“Just distribute the server” isn’t a requirement. It has never been a requirement. Who said that’s a requirement?

It’s just a possible solution. And to me it seems to be the easiest since that is the exact way it used to be done.

What exactly publishers will have to do depends entirely on if the campaign is successful and how the resulting laws are written. And may be as simple as an expiration date on all future game sales.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

After I had gotten the hang of Hellblade’s combat on the adaptive difficulty I turned it to easy by the end because killing enemies had become just a slog. Funnily enough it coincided with her getting the new ultimate sword and made the game feel much more epic.

BTW, Baldur’s Gate 3 does difficulty very well. Enemies get better abilities and use the good ones more frequently.

Here are some favourites of my daughter:

  • Minetest, a completely free and open source Minecraft clone
  • Picsart, a drawing app. I couldn’t find any free app that is similar in features.
  • the camera app, to make short videos, even cool stop motion videos, or pictures to paint on with Picsart
  • Signal, to share her art with the family. Although I don’t think it will run on a tablet.
  • Toca Boca World, a cute little game where you can decorate houses and play with figures
  • GCompris, a compilation of learning games, although she seems to have grown out of them in third grade

If you have a PC great games for her besides Minecraft are Spider-Man, Goat Simulator, Life is Strange: True Colors (we play that together) and GTA 5 (seriously, give her a 100% save. the interactivity in that game is through the roof)

I think they actually are unionized. At least in the UK. That’s what some of the Baldur’s Gate 3 actors said when asked about the anti AI strikes. They can’t participate because of the rules of their union.

If I recall correctly there is even a sentence in the article about the British union starting to tackle this issue.

And on the other side we have the Baldur’s Gate actors praising Larian for hiring intimacy coordinators and not requiring themselves to mocap the sex scenes.

Edit: Ah, just saw that this is addressed at the end of the article.

Is 4k at 120 FPS really that impressive for Doom? My gut feeling is that at least source ports can run 4k at hundreds of fps.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Nah, the community has been keeping it alive for decades, much better than any corporation could.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Both controller support and splitscreen are available in source ports.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

The marketing makes it sound like it’s supposed to be impressive. For such an old game that runs on everything with a computer chip it would just be strange if it was missing.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Nice, i wonder if that also means that we won’t have to download the installers or can just download all of the game files directly. Should make installing big games a lot faster and also help with limited disk space.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

It’s not impossible at all. People have done this literally for decades. Classic WoW only exists because people hosted their own seevers and Blizzard wanted in on the money. Star Wars Galaxies the same. I think Everquest 1 as well. And probably others as well.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Because they can be sued for that. Have been sued for that. And while it is possible to reverse engineer this stuff it is incredibly hard to do. So games with smaller fanbases might lack the manpower to achieve it. Or the game was made in such a way as to make reverse engineering impossible.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Divinity Original Sin 2 apparently has them. Don’t know how much you can do with them hut there’s a stream out there with Matt Mercer using it to DM. But I haven’t watched it yet because I want to play the game myself first.

But honestly, going from software rendering to 3D acceleration with a 3dfx Voodoo 2 accelerator with a whopping 8 MB RAM made me appreciate FPS. I spent several minutes just switching weapons in Jedi Knight and marveling at how quickly that suddenly went.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Funny thing is that the game is actually worse 3D accelerated because the trilinear filtering made textures blurry and thus removed special colors that made specific colors glow in the dark.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I was genuinely upset that my parents didn’t get me the 12 MB version which locked me at 800x600. But I didn’t really get the distinction between system RAM and graphics RAM so I couldn’t formulate my frustration.
