What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved? angielski

I’ve been recently been thinking about Arkane Studio’s Prey which is a immersive sim, with a pretty good rogue like dlc, that probably has one of the strongest hooks of any game I’ve played. If you liked Halflife, System Shock, or Deus Ex it’s definitely worth a play....

the PC version is pretty fucked in the “feel great” department. the engine itself renders frames at arbitrary framerates just fine, but the animations (including the camera) only update at up to 60 FPS, with no in-game option to cap the frame rate to that animation rate. vsync doesn’t work properly with high refresh rates, and external framerate limiters aren’t able to get a good match. it’s borderline impossible to get this game to feel smooth with proper frame pacing, even with a vrr display.

best i could get was to use external tools to force the game to set my monitor to 60 hz, then turn on vsync in game, but this added a ton of input lag

Ron Perlman provided opening and closing narration for all the numbered Fallout games.

And Fallout 1 was very much a “budget” title for Interplay, so it’s not like the studio was just splashing money around because they could.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

all of his work for the game would have been finished months ago by now

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

how in the hell would you get RDR2 to run at 60 FPS on the Switch?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

in these instances the steam version is usually also drm-free

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

to reduce competition to fortnite

this doesn’t make any sense, these games were never competing with fortnite.

delisting these games was a very shitty thing to do, but there is no reason for us to go around fabricating nonsensical motives to explain it. the far simpler explanation is that they didn’t want to put in the work to keep these games playable on modern PCs.

it’s the paypal problem

sellers everywhere fucking hate paypal

but they all still use it because buyers fucking love paypal

Because of epic that now changed since even if you don’t actually sell more games you at least can get a guaranteed profit as if you sold those games that you miss out on by not being on steam.

how long do devs think this is sustainable?

to me it seems like devs are trading long term sustainability for short term profitability. sure, your game Cracksnot was profitable because EGS paid out the butt to make it exclusive. now hardly anyone has played your game, how many people are going to get excited about Cracksnot 2 in a few years? will epic still be willing to pay you upfront for Cracksnot 2 exclusivity?

if egs never really takes off (which so far, it hasn’t), eventually epic will cut their losses and stop throwing money at it.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

steam is good and egs sucks. it’s not worship, just consumers voicing their preference for a better product.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

features like steam input and steam play benefit every game regardless if the developer actively supports them. i use the latter quite frequently.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

sort of. the fact that egs is still not profitable on its own merits and that developers still shuttle their games over to steam once exclusivity is up tells me that not enough customers are taking the bait.

if being on egs didn’t mean taking a huge hit in total sales, developers would be putting games exclusively on it without uncle tim slapping them over the face with a bag of money

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

you have to wonder why they even bothered with a switch port

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

anybody who spends money on this port is a fool

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

the switch has a huge library of great games, so why would someone buy this dumpster fire instead of something good?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

They thought people would be confused by the Xbox 2 going up against the PlayStation 3 so they deliberately adotped even more confusing names.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

the game will probably be finished by then too

The industry should have stopped with the Magnavox Odyssey, every new console released since has been a scam to take more of your money in exchange for faster annd more capable hardware.

@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

How is this news?

I suppose we’ll start seeing articles every time a new Mario game doesn’t come out on PlayStation?

beefcat, (edited )
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

I thought the UK’s reservations were more over the cloud streaming market than console exclusivity. It’s hard to make a stink about market share when this acquisition will only make them #3 in total size.

But the reason I ask why this is “news” is because this little fact has been known for quite a while now.

I’m also a bit fuzzy on whether I would categorize The Elder Scrolls as a “historically cross-platform franchise” when most of it’s numbered entries are not on anything other than PC or Xbox. Though to me these have always been PC games. Console versions of anything other than Skyrim felt like an afterthought.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

AAA companies aren’t making these remasters, they are typically handled by small studios that specialize in exactly this kind of work.

Most of the work of re-releasing these old games is porting the old code to new platforms. Making them run at higher resolutions and frame rates is usually not all that much effort in comparison, so you might as well do it.

Frankly it’s kind of weird to complain about the existence of a product nobody is forcing you to buy.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Remake != remaster

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Funny, I had to do the same with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to smooth over some weird hitching that game had.

Kinda sucks for people without VRR displays though.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Is the Game Porting Toolkit starting to pay dividends? I didn’t really buy my Mac to play games, but I won’t complain about more of my Steam library being playable on-the-go.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

The only way Unity can realistically fix it at this point is to pull a WotC and not just backtrack all these changes, but implement a legal mechanism that guarantees changes like this cannot ever be retroactively applied to past versions of the engine.

I don’t think Unity will do that.

@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

They don’t want to hire people to build and maintain a secure login platform when their parent company already has one. This is way more work and liability than most people realize.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

The fun part is most of the people bitching have no clue how to do any of this. Probably the same people who bitch about new games not supporting Windows 7.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t see how you could possibly make Bedrock and Java compatible with each other seeing as the whole point of Java edition is compatibility with mods written in…Java…

The shitty thing to do would have been to tell mod users to fuck off and force everyone over to Bedrock. Instead they’ve done well by the community, maintaining Java edition and even giving it preferential treatment when it comes to updates. Bedrock is built for consoles, where mods are not a thing and performance is more important.

Ironically I think BG3 is buggier than Starfield on release.

I’ve experienced a few instances of bethesda jank, but nothing game breaking or even requiring a reload in ~55 hours of play. Just silly things like bodies getting stuck in a ceiling after an explosion. My SO is playing BG3 and has been getting CTD’s and other more egrigious bugs since hitting act 3.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

But it’s not a bad game

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

But it’s not a middling game either. I’m having a blast.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

What mods do you recommend for FONV?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Can we add a cheaper non-portable option to the wishlist? I don’t like paying for a screen or battery or junky mobile controllers that I will never use.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

The author wasn’t selling DLSS, they were selling a shim to make it work with Starfield. That does require original work.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Knowing how to do the work is most of the value here. Yes, it’s easy for those of us with the knowhow, but most people do not have that.

Think of an artist who can whip up a cool drawing in about 10 minutes. It was “easy” in the moment, but only because they spent years learning and practicing the skills to make it so. You aren’t entitled to that artists labor for free just because it only took them a few minutes.

Sit your average gamer down with a copy of Starfield and nvngx_dlss.dll and they won’t be able to do anything useful with it.

It’s great that most modders and some artists like to share their work for free with the rest of the world, but the rest of us aren’t entitled to any of it.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

You still hang around on Reddit?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know in this particular case, but the mods I have seen require you to provide the Nvidia DLL yourself.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t been on Reddit for weeks.

But we both know this was a pointless question.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

The extra shaders are also applied to NPCs when you talk to them. But there’s never really a way to see the player’s face with these features outside the character creator.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Turn on FSR but keep the resolution scale at 100% if you don’t want it doing any upscaling. This looks a lot sharper to me than native resolution with no FSR.

I wonder if this is because the TAA implementation lacks a sharpening pass.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

That CPU is a little long in the tooth

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

You didn’t have to pre-order it for early access.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

What does this thread have to do with pre-ordering?

beefcat, (edited )
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

TF2 and Dishonored accomplished this by having all the other level data loaded in memory simultaneously all as part of the same map. The instant transitions are accomplished by teleporting the player to another part of the map that is already in memory.

This is not the same trick R&C pulled, and it has far more limitations. For example, TF2’s Effect and Cause necessitates a smaller overall map than the other missions because they had to fit two different versions of the same map in memory all at once. If they wanted to let you transition between three different time periods, they would have had to make it even smaller to fit in the same memory budget.

Ratchet & Clank’s approach has no such limitations. They could let you switch between 8 different time periods and not worry about having to fit all of them in memory at once.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

The original post is incorrect, you didn’t have to pre-order to play early. I bought my copy after reviews dropped.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

How Morrowind and other open world games work has very little in common with the approaches used in R&C or Titanfall 2.

This approach has its own unique limitations. In Morrowind, you cannot instantly teleport from one side of the map to the other, in theory that would only be possible between adjacent cells. Otherwise, fast traveling would be instantaneous.

The beauty of what R&C does is that there are no limitations at all. You can almost instantly teleport between any maps the game has. No hacks or trickery beyond the brief animation concealing the 1-2 seconds it takes to shuttle the data from the SSD to VRAM. This is unique, and simply wasn’t possible on spinning rust without radically simplifying your level design and visual package to fit within the limited bandwith.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

macos natively supports xbox and playstation controllers

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

It sounds like this one doesn’t really need patches to be fun, it is in a pretty polished state on day 1. Which is weird for a Bethesda game.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

And they outperform AMD on ray tracing workloads, so I think they will age better as more games start shipping with RT features over the next year.
