Previously, I had mused over vague ideas about whether blockchain technologies could go into a “proof of real person” system, by one-way-hashing information used to verify only basic details about a person. Eg: They exist, are a unique person, and are over a certain age. Ideally, it could be set up in a way that cannot easily correlate them between company databases.
That said, no real need to poke holes in the idea, because…that was the easy part, and it will probably never happen (or be far more draconian than I describe)
Storyline? What kind of lore-addled whackjobs needed a storyline to get invested in two teams of knuckleheads killing each other endlessly in the Nevadan wasteland? Back when I played video games, it was two bleeping and blorping pixels that would gladly use their own guts as a rope to strangle the other. And you were lucky if...
I’m curious whether that new feature, Hidden games, appears in this summary. I think it had some early missteps because it would disappear from some views but appear in others.
The Sexy Brutale is a fun Groundhog Day puzzle game set in a casino where you must sneak around to prevent the staff from murdering the guests. The story seems insignificant but becomes astounding towards the end. It’s currently $5.
Unmetal is a very fun Metal Gear parody that isn’t totally lax with its writing - maintaining just enough serious tone to keep you invested and break your expectations when it uses the storytelling format to throw you for a loop. Currently $4.
Homebody is another Groundhog Day puzzle game, also about preventing your friends from being murdered - but with a very different tone. Creepy at times, and requires a slow unraveling of every one of the mansion’s puzzles. $5
Tyrion Cuthbert is an astoundingly-done indie take on the Ace Attorney format, set in a fantasy universe with its own magical rules. 5 full cases, with some big character moments in the later ones. Currently $10.
Near Death is a short horror game based on surviving arctic chill at an abandoned base at night. It feels much like an indie game version of The Martian, especially when you contact personnel that can give you tips but can’t send a rescue party. Currently $2.
Full Metal Furies is a very fun “beatemup-style” game very much focused on unique character abilities and cooperation. The writing is very funny, and each character operates very different. Currently $5.
Oh, and on the topic of coop games with primarily female casts: Assault Android Cactus is a lot of fun even for people who haven’t played games much. Rather than use a teammate reviving mechanic, players can pick themselves up - but everyone is fighting their timer to complete the mission before their batteries run out. Levels are quick and chaotic. $5.
In a way, I accept that. I think too many super discounts were starting to poison the industry such that indie devs with a limited audience couldn’t even make their costs back, and couldn’t raise their price because they’d compete with so much $4 slop.
(By the way, my other post highlights some great $4 slop)
I think highlighting the success story is kind of missing both the great circumstances Larian built that game under, and the giant mountain of singleplayer games that are pretty good, but hit no success at all.
I’m still a bit unsure how plausible it is to make a multiplayer game, keep it updated, and not sell content within the game.
The good devs restrict it to cosmetic options, but I can’t say I’ve moralistically stuck to that kind of perfection - I’m okay with new weapons/characters as long as they stay balanced against old ones. It becomes a sort of hazy issue.
Something a lot of people miss (and actually Far Cry 6 forgot/discarded) is most Far Cry games end with a very deconstructive and sad message towards the violence you’ve achieved through the game.
They tend to miss since people that care about writing skip these games. I’m curious what they could do with it though.
I used to only use this for game recording. But, it got a glitch where games record with a red tint ever since I upgraded my monitor. Thankfully, every single gaming helper app seems to feature recording now, so I just switched to another.
Is that with Steam’s “recent off-topic activity” system turned on, or off?
Steam introduced something where if they see a large scale of reviews in a short period that express thoughts unrelated to the game itself, they exclude those reviews from the default view of the page.
Considering Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to PlayStation (Bethesda, owned by MS), it’s obviously no longer Microsoft’s goal to keep to themselves.
I don’t think the “has no games” argument matters much for either console anymore. It’s now more about Japanese devs releasing on PlayStation purely out of familiarity (eg, Final Fantasy), and which monthly subscription you like more.
We know that certain games are big, like BG3 or Persona 5. But recently games like FF7 rebirth and Indiana Jones just kept going on and on past “Act 3”. Also Rise of the Golden Idol seemed a little short to me...
Considering how simple its premise is, Another Crab’s Treasure seems pretty basic, like its story doesn’t have much left, at several points. People online gave some takes that four boss fights from the end, they thought each one would be the final boss.
Far Cry 3 also did this well. You finish the skill tree, do the last few missions where the increased power slides the difficulty down…and then it turns out you unlock a whole other island to make use of your full ability tree in every encounter.
I really appreciated learning how much Immersive Sim is in Indiana Jones.
You get a hazy overhead map and need to navigate lots of hidden entrances, presented through verticality, exploring to find valuables. You can win in combat through good reflexes, but once surrounded your only option is to run. There’s no detective vision, and it instead relies on vocal barks where guards chatter or cough or sneeze often enough to remind you where they are.
The stealth isn’t fully on par, since you’re low on gadgets and darkness doesn’t seem to do a lot, but it’s there. I got the same sense of glee as Soulslike games when I take a long circuit to some door, unlock it, and it leads back to a common area, providing me a new shortcut.
The most painful thing will be if the game turns out to be bad, and we have to painstakingly explain “Yes, it was bad, but it’s not somehow specifically because it features a bald female lead.”
That’s actually what I hope they’re fixing with the remake.
Early puzzles were clever, later puzzles just have so many parts it feels like a laborious chore to get every laser and box and replay exactly where it needs to be. I’m sorry to say I didn’t even finish the game.
Playing Another Crab’s Treasure - a Soulslike with a humorous tone. I had the game on Xbox, but abandoned that and replaying on Steam. I think having a calmer, more analytical mood to the difficulty is helping me make progress faster.
There’s a region where you need to stick to the path lest you awaken a gigantic and threatening enemy bearing an instant-kill attack. I just returned to that area and killed it.
I’ve slowly acclimated to Soulslikes since Tunic, and a common theme is that they make you think you need to be pressing more buttons, when they’re often teaching specialized bits of patience. In Tunic’s case, a lot of people expend their stamina too quickly.
I’m looking for titles that will run well on my only computer. Which is a 5-year-old 13" convertible laptop attached to a docking station with a 24" 1920x1080 screen. It’s got Intel internal graphics....
Such laptops are at the low end. But, if you have a really good Internet connection, you could expand your options a lot with GeForce Now. Basically a paid service to use cloud servers to render your game; surrendering an often-unnoticeable delay in response time. They have a free tier worth trying.
The only reason I’m considering a PSVR2 right now is the option to connect it to PC. But it’s apparently not the best experience, and needs a dedicated adapter.
Not going to cite the source, since it spoils part of this game, and it’s currently popular.
I have something to say. So shut the fuck up and listen. I spent thirteen years half-cut up to my eyeballs. Drunk, to put it mildly. Then suddenly I saw it, a streetlight shining in my face. 500 Gigawatts of the power of God. A vision of my bloated body found in some ditch. Scared me straight. So I got a collar shirt, mortgage and a credit card. All the things that make me a good man. I hoped I could raise my children to be better than their old man. I wanted to believe I was never one setback away from my worst self. But the truth is. Discipline. Drive. Routine. The endless fucking desperation to get shit done. A loving wife? Great kids? Sobriety? I’m telling you. You. Accomplishments I’ve been chasing my whole life. Never felt as good as I expected when I crossed the finish line… So now that we’re at the end. Takin’ inventory. Those nights spinning out of my head, sinking into the sofa. Broken glass in my palms. Bleeding dry the funniest thing ever. Old dogs laughing and snarling on a waterbed floor, mocking the moon for daring to show its face. All nausea and wreckage and vomit and ugly cruelty. The only problem in the world an empty bottle. Those were the best days of my life. Yeah… Those were the best days of my life. I got nothing to hide. Ready to face the music. I can see myself for what I am. But you, a cowardly, selfish motherfucker and you can’t even see it… I should’ve been able to protect the kid. If I could have done one thing right, I wish it had been to give him one small chance off this goddamned rock.
Valve is already under fire for Nazi content in fringe parts of Steam Community (warranted or not); I don’t think they want to tackle responsibility of moderating another large social network.
None of the good stealth games I know actually force stealth. You just get scored based on the amount of chaos, and enemies gain varying amounts of information off your actions. It doesn’t necessarily change to a firefight just because one guy saw you.
If the shootouts are the better part of this game, not to mention the stealth takedowns looking pretty bad, it probably makes sense to shift this way.
I was never so deeply in favor of the acquisition, but I did find the focus on exclusives hypocritical. Microsoft had already made many of their games available cross platform, while Sony had not at the time.
I still see the PS5Pro as a bit dumb, but also not sure what Sony could easily do around this problem.
We’re at the graphical plateau where any improvements become extremely expensive, and increasingly hard to notice. Sure, we have 4K TVs and we’re not quite able to play all our games at 4K 120fps, but very few people care about that level of detail. Honestly, I don’t even know what Sony may be planning for the PS6 while still keeping it at a reasonable price.
One thing I have struggled with lately is finding good games to play. I bounce around from game to game trying to enjoy it but it just doesn’t scratch the itch like it used to. For example, one of my favorites was old school RuneScape, but it hasn’t really been giving me the same enjoyment that it used to. So then I would...
I have been really tempted to jump into VR for a little while now, I tried it when the quest first came out, the very first one but it was too blurry and made me dizzy. I’ve considered getting back into it again, but the thing that has made me really hesitant is I’ve heard that VR is not in the greatest place and that it’s...
Much as I trust Sony more than Meta, part of the issue is that 80% of the cool stuff from VR comes from indie teams running an ItchIO page or Patreon, not established publishers.
Supposedly, PSVR2 can work with PC now but I don’t know how refined that integration is.
On enemy variety, I see the critique of games like Zelda: BOTW and even realistic games like Hitman. Something those games have in common is very well-made enemy AI that presents you many ways to defeat them.
The way in which Half-Life maintained a continuous viewpoint over long stretches of gameplay and landscape was always so immersive to me. Games like God of War and Dead Space did something similar, but Valve had an additional challenge.
They almost never take player control, instead relying on mere hints of where to look; they even have the character sequences scripted for wherever the player was standing. That all usually took a lot of their effort.
I could be biased because I even enjoyed toying with their choreography tool, which let you layer simple gestures together; so without making a new animation, you could have someone both lean forward and nod right, and point their thumb right.
Half-Life: Alyx spoilersIt’s gonna be wild watching Valve try to explain that Eli was brought back from the dead in a prequel game that took place years before Half-Life 2, that 90% of their fans couldn’t play.
If anything, this seems targeted to the less avid gaming enthusiasts who would be interested in playing some games, but couldn’t see themselves buying a console.
I used to find XCloud’s portability a nice thing, until they increased the subscription fees. To my knowledge, you can’t even get cloud access unless you get GP Ultimate.
Oh, and let’s not forget these are the people that fired the developers of GOTY Hi-Fi Rush.
I tried out Portal RTX, found the room where the light ball is casting shadows all around. It looked nice; but I also felt like I’ve seen the same effect imitated with regular rendering. Sure there might be slight differences, but I wouldn’t have spotted them.
They usually are free to play with predatory monetization mechanics. That was especially back in 2016 when thanks to these games, the mobile gaming revenue outpaced PC and console gaming revenue.
Not that it succeeded long term, but I salute Apple Arcade’s venture on this. It’s a subscription service that aimed to highlight iPhone games that had no monetization, and were usually small indie games with a fun idea.
I imagine a lawsuit would likely bring up the topic of how hard it would be for a developer to keep the game around past purchase.
For instance, imagine a massively multiplayer online game; everyone playing the game is acutely aware of how much server hardware is needed to maintain that online presence, and it’s unrealistic to assume it would exist forever.
That’s probably why attention was pushed onto The Crew. It’s a racing game that shouldn’t need much from a server, so it’s arguably unfair to tie it to that access and take it offline.
If it was “reasonably” priced at your metric, it’s possible they would’ve only broken even selling it to you, unless you also planned to buy a lot of games to go along with it.
I’m not supporting the model, just that if it was going to exist in any form, it wasn’t going to be much cheaper than this.
I was just thinking about the blue shell. It’s given to someone in 7th place, but it doesn’t help them get ahead. It just shuffles the order of the first 3 players.
Sonic &AS Racing had a much better blue shell: A player that’s behind gets the “Hornet Swarm”, which places a network of traps at the front of the pack, slowing down ALL players by a bit. You can navigate it if you’re skillful, and if the first player hits one, the others have fewer to deal with. And of course, when the thrower reaches it, they lift up for them.
