ICastFist, do games w GOG seems to be considering paid membership option
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I filled the survey as well. It’s mostly focused on “games preservation”. I’m not up to pay subscription for anything they’re willing to offer and even made sure to tell them that I’m willing to pay a premium for whatever useful content (games) end up exclusive to subscribers

ICastFist, do games w What are some old games that are hard to revisit, because a more modern and superior version exists?
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Those old computer dungeon crawler games, like Wizardry or Might and Magic 1-2. Jesus, they’re absolute exercises in patience. You don’t even have to play anything very recent to see how poorly they aged, even SNES JRPGs of 1992-4 were much better.

I remember that the dev of Legend of Grimrock added an option for movement with the mouse because a disabled gamer wanted to play. Maybe that second friend should check that and the 2nd game out.

Using a mouse with your non dominant hand is annoying…

Yeah, for PC they’ll probably have to grit their teeth and power through the discomfort. An alternative is getting a hand in some old emulated games. Anything from the NES era can be mapped to 4 movements + 4 buttons (start, select, A, B), which on a keyboard could be WASD + Q, E, R and F. Dunno how to set something similar on a Deck.

Might finally try the game sometime, I bought it during a Steam sale, before Palworld was announced, but never even installed it.

@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Roblox isn’t so much “a game” but a collection of thousands of player created games (or “experiences” as the company calls them). You can find a bit of everything, from obstacle courses to first person shooters to casinos.

Since Roblox is so heavily targeted at children, it’s very easy to find pedophiles or other people with ill intent. Moderation doesn’t exist, afaik

What about FF14 or Guild Wars 2? Don’t they count as pre-live service MMORPGs, too?

Half the options of the original FF7

I’m pretty sure nobody had the option to save Aeris, side with Sephiroth, finish blowing up Shinra before having to change to disc 2, etc

FromSoft had been making those games for the better part of 15 years, building and iterating on what came before.

Longer, if we really want to get pedantic. King’s Field, the game and series that is now the spiritual predecessor to the Souls genre, is from 1994, so we could probably say they have been refining their own flavor of action RPG for over 30 years now.

The freedom that Morrowind gives you has never been matched by other Bethesda titles. I think the only path that’s blocked to the player is joining the Sixth House, but at least you can kill Vivec before confronting Dagoth Ur

I can’t speak for Daggerfall’s freedom as I haven’t really delved into it, but I know it has 6 different endings depending on which faction you ally with.

ICastFist, do gaming w Small, incremental improvements don't make shockwaves like the old massive tech leaps used to.
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

What those leaps do result in, however, is major performance gains.

Which many devs will make sure you never feel them by “optimizing” the game for only the most bleeding edge hardware

Then there’s efficiency. What if you could run Monster Hunter Wilds at max graphics, on battery, for hours? The first gen M1 Max MacBook Pro can comfortably run Baldur’s Gate III. Reducing power draw would have immense benefits on top of graphical improvements.

See, if the games were made with a performance first mindset, that’d be possible already. Not to dunk on performance gains, but there’s a saying that every time hardware gets faster, programmers make their code slower. I mean, you can totally play emulated SNES games with minimal impact compared to leaving the computer idling.

Saying “diminishing returns” is like saying that fire burns you when you touch it.

Unless chip fabrication can figure a way to make transistors “stack” on top of one another, effectively making 3D chips, they’ll continue to be “flat” sheets that can only increase core count horizontally. Single core frequency peaked in early 2000s, from then on it’s been about adding more cores. Even the gains from a RTX 5090 vs a RTX 4090 aren’t that big. Now compare with the gains from a GTX 980 vs a GTX 1080
