I only buy fighting games when they launch the complete edition with everything included (at least all the characters, I don't care about the cosmetic extras that I will never use). Since I don't play online (I suck at fighting games so playing online it's a waste of time, but I still like the genre) I'm pretty much unaffected if the online is active or not

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I thought the standards people were talking about were the exceptional treatment the players received (Larian provided a full game experience. This is no abusive DLC scheme, no predatory microtransactions and way more polished than the average AAA game experience)

It turns out all the fuss was about the game size?

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

Well, TotK is a DLC of BotK sold as a full prized game they can repeat it again, they have to recycle the map again add a couple of mechanics and done, a brand new game for the switch 2

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

It’s still less expensive than a PC hobby

just with the sales and free online/cloudsaves PCs are cheaper in the long run

And mods are an added value, we can even include fanmade patches that fix what developers don't into that added value

Consumers don’t have much say in what these companies do or how they operate.

Yes, they do. Microsoft tried to incorporate Xbox live onto PC and it was a failure because PC consumers didn't bought it

The same goes with paid mods, Valve and Bethesda tried to make people buy mods and it was rejected by the consumer so the have to backtrack.

Consumers have all the power in their wallet they decide what course the companies take. If a company does something that goes against your interests as consumer is as easy as stop giving them money, if you hurt them economically, they'll have to go back to the business model that gave them profits (this works only if the average consumer is intelligent enough to protect their own interest/rights)

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I'd say it's more expensive to lack common sense

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

No, if you are poor you learn to value every cent and not being wasteful, if you have common sense, of course

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I'm not rich, I know what I'm talking about. When I'm going to spend money I have to look the best way to spend it, which is the best "invest". Being wasteful is an luxury I personally can't afford.

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

making value judgements on other poor people for being poor is not okay

luckyly for me, I'm not doing that

basic tier for those of us who just want online play and cloud save

That should be free. It's when people should have started boycotting Sony (and Microsoft and Nintendo) now it's just too late

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

It's too late. Just because you stopped paying for Xbox live does not means Microsoft is going to make it free.

People should not have accepted pay for online play but since is widespread, it's too late to revert it

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

There’s no way Nintendo abandons the removable joycons.

Nintendo abandoned the dual screen, and that was an incredible feature, I totally see them abandoning removable controllers

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

Neither the DS nor the 3DS flopped, on the contrary. the DS was the most sold console in the world

And it gave us new experiences, new ways to play and also made some stuff better (like having extra info, like maps, information or access to the inventory, having that meant you didn't need to pause the game)

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I’m not a console owner, are PlayStation owners really giving Sony $60 a year to play online multiplayer?

It all started with the Xbox, since people did not questioned it and received it with open arms the others (Sony and Nintendo) just copied it. It's just matter of time we end up paying on PC too

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

To have access to those "free games" you have to pay first, so how come they are free when they are asking money for them?

Free is this:

No payments required and you keep it forever

AAA PC exclusive titles also have the right to exists.

I miss playing good first person shooters...

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I miss playing good shooters since the PS360 era, way before the battle royale genre entered the game.

It's when the genre exploded on consoles and it was when the genre was overly simplified and dumbed down

Before, some multiplatform FPS changed between the PC version and the console version. The console versions often had maps changed or even completely removed (and enemies where altered too) because they where too much for a controller

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I know we've had cases like older GTA or NFS titles removing songs from the game in updates because the licenses ran out.

Not in updates, but in re-releases.

If you want to sell the game again you have to renegotiate the music licenses because the deal was only for the original release

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

That was a re-release, not an update

And that re-release was a port of the android version (that was also a re-release)

A re-release does not always means a graphical upgrade, it just means release the game on new systems or stores

If you had the original 2004 release installed on PC it would not receive an update patch in 2014. They just released it in new platforms (Steam) and since they were releasing the game again they had to change it because they music rights were not negotiated for that release

PlayStation Portal Doesn’t Have Bluetooth (gamingbolt.com)

Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation Portal, and as a cloud-exclusive Remote Play handheld device, it’s obviously got a few caveats attached. I wonder if building realistic cities is possible. Not being able to do it was turn off for me in the first game

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

I mean how cities are made/planned in real life

In Cities Skylines you have residencial, commercial, industrial and office zones, right? That is not how you make a city irl. Photographic proof

irl when you make an apartment building the ground floor is used for commercial purposes (you can have banks, restaurants, clothes stores, butchers, surpermarkets, whatever...) as you can see in the photos I linked.

Even more, you can buy (or rent) an appartment and make it an office for your business, so, appart from industrial zones, everything is mixed irl

The developer is European idk why the game focuses only in american style city planning that are highly inefficient and car-centric. You barelly need a car when you have access to all kind of services at 10 or 15 minutes walking

The ingame "High density residential zones" should include some type of commercial activity in the city to be more realistic

Gordon_Freeman,
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

Well, yeah, I wrote about it in the same comment

The developer is European idk why the game focuses only in american style city planning

Steam Deck VS rivals

I was interested in buying a Steam Deck… Until I discovered all the (apparently) better alternatives. Asus Rog Ally, OneXPlayer, Aya Neo etc… I like the idea of an handheld console and obviously I would like to have a device that can run almost everything, so the Windows based handhelds seem better than the Steam Deck. Is it...

Gamefreak cannot keep its historically small team size while trying to make large, open world titles that release annually

Define "small". For Sword and Shield they had around 1000 workers, according to Ohmori, the game's director.

With 200 being from Game Freak, some from Creatures Inc. (they make the 3D models and send them to Game Freak) Debugging and Quality Control is externalized

So, yeah. The number being close to a thousand, that of course includes all the different functions like marketing and PR and everyone that would be associated with the game ahead of release. But I think at Game Freak, really the core team of people that worked on the game was around 200 people. And of course, Creatures is another partner company that develops 3D models of the Pokémon. There are various teams that handle debugging at our partner companies as well. So there’s a lot of people involved and I think in terms of just the sheer number of the most resources required to make something happen for the development, it was definitely more on the graphical side of things.

https://www.polygon.com/interviews/2019/10/24/20929597/game-freak-explains-the-1000-staff-missing-creatures-and-leek-size-of-pokemon-sword-and-shield

So it's not like Game Freak does everything for the game. They don't have to do the 3D models that will be used in the game nor debugging

And they hired more for Scarlet and Violet iirc

Fan Ports PlayStation Classic [WipeOut], Dares Sony To Shut Him Down And Make Its Own (kotaku.com)

WipeOut was Sony’s initial first-party exclusive for the original PlayStation when it launched back in 1995. The anti-gravity racing game was phenomenal. Now it’s abandoned. So one dedicated programmer took it upon himself to excavate the game’s leaked source code and make it playable for free in any web browser....

Gordon_Freeman,

WipeOut was Sony’s initial first-party exclusive for the original PlayStation

It was so exclusive that was ported to DOS, Windows and the Sega Saturn

So next year we can expect Quake III Arena, I guess

I tried playing the two original Baldur's Gate games on Ubuntu. It's hell.

Long story short: I am absolutely inexperienced with Linux distros but made the switch from Windows a bit more than a year ago. Right now, everyone’s talking about Baldur’s Gate 3, including a lot of the podcasts and shows I follow: since I never experienced the OG games, I wanted to try them out. They were on sale on GOG,...

“2B’s combat was kind of basic”

I haven't played Nier, but I'd say that defines perfectly Platinum games' games (or at least the ones I played)

Gordon_Freeman, (edited )
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

And when you actually pick up the controller and play one of them, you begin to feel like you’ve been through the same gameplay loop as many other games this generation: Tales Of Arise, Scarlet Nexus, Nier Automata, Valkyrie Elysium, YS 8 and 9; they’re all essentially the same action game with different spices and aesthetic fluff.

I'd quote the same fragment as you, and I'll add:

It's the same for western RPGs

All action RPG games feel "samey" (think Gothic, The Elder Scrolls, Elex, Two Worlds...) they’re all essentially the same game with different spices and aesthetic fluff.
All dungeon crawlers (Diablo, Torchlight, Path of Exile, Titan Quest, Sacred) they’re all essentially the same game with different spices and aesthetic fluff.
All DnD games are exactly the same (Baldurgs Gate, Neverwinter Night, Icewind Dale, PlaneEscape, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Dragon Age...) they’re all essentially the same game with different spices and aesthetic fluff.

Anyways, the article is about JRPGs, but the author for some reason only focuses on action games that are not JRPGs (Scarlet Nexus, Nier, Valkyrie Elisum, Ys 8, etc...)

It's like writing an article about chess, but complain about checkers

Bayonetta has basic combat?

When I bough Bayonetta 1+2 for the Wii U I was expecting something close to Devil May Cry (They share the same director and almost the same developing team, after all) but it was a huge disappointment everything is so dumbed down and simple that is not even fun. People only likes it because they are satisfied with the over-the-top action and Bayonetta one-liners and that's all.

My main complains with Bayonetta are the following:

All the weapons feel the same, where the only change is the attack speed, their cosmetic appearance and in some cases some minor and useless changes, like if you hold the attack buttons and the weapons you have equiped are fireweapons, they shoot (with this I mean combos, like PPPK, KKKPK, etc... do the same with every weapon, except maybe the Kulshedra, the extremely basic whip, the weapons do not feel unique in any meaningful way, they all have the same moveset and combos. In Devil May Cry each weapon is unique, with their own moveset and combos, and their moveset changes depending on the style you have active, for extra depth)

Finding the secret stuff is too easy (except for some verses and Alfheim, that require some backtrack at specific points, but finding the vinyls to get new weapons is too easy)

Speaking of the Alfheims, they are not even chanllenging (compared to the Secret Missions in Devil May Cry)

Bayonetta 2 is even worse, everything is way more simplistic and easy than the first one, I haven't bothered with Bayonetta 3

This is what playing Bayonetta feels like

Fishing minigames. I hate them with every single fiber of my body specially when they are mandatory for progress or to get 100% completition

They are not relaxing, they are painfully boring

I love hard games, but only when the challenge is fair, if the game consist solely on trial and error, that's bad

I genuinely enjoy the "git gud" journey, I find it very rewarding
