PC Gamer: The top 100 PC games (www.pcgamer.com)

Quite a good list, although without any real surprises, except for the cheeky inclusion of a recent fan-made PC port. I’m glad Kerbal Space Program is on it, but a few other personal favorites (and candidates for best game of all time) are absent, like The Talos Principle, BeamNG.drive, NEO Scavenger, World of Goo, Mafia,...

thingsiplay,

No Overwatch in the entire list? Final Fantasy 14 the only FF in the list? No Dota 2 or Leage of Legends? No Batman game?

I know its just opinions and fun, but I’m just very surprised, not angry or anything like that.

thingsiplay,

Sure, but how do you explain then Persona 5 Royal then on place 5 then? Final Fantasy 7 Remake got higher ratings, I think sold more and was surely more popular on PC, right? Red Dead Redemption 2 was also released on PC when it anywhere near its initial relevance. Metal Gear Solid 3 or Mass Effect Legendary Edition is even worse, because those games are much much older.

Also Portal behind Slay the Spire? Team Fortress 2 34 places behind Hunt: Showdown 1896? So strange! These Valve games were revolutionary and defined their genre with huge number of players and fanbase.

My point is just, that the given argumentation here doesn’t hold up to me. But that is what you get if you ask people for their opinion. It’s just that and it will always surprise you.

A New Law Just Forced Valve To Change Steam. (Steam is still the same but now they have to state that it is a license and not ownership) (www.youtube.com)

TL:DW Steam has now changed its language from buy game to A purchase of a digital product grants a licence to the product on steam. This may also be non compliant with the new regulation as it still uses the word purchase. Also GOG used this opportunity to let you know their games come with an installer that they cannot take...

thingsiplay,

The law didn’t change Steam. It was always like that. Steam just added a note to clarify this. Nothing has changed really.

thingsiplay,

The linked video channel “Bellular News” is known for their clickbait titles.

thingsiplay,

Ah, I see a man of culture as well. :D Yes, thank you. :-) I like interacting with the community in Brodie’s comment section as well. Pretty cool people. Its often just a joke or meme, but sometimes I get involved in more thoughtful discussions as well. As strange as it sounds for YouTube comments. lol. Good to see you here as well.

thingsiplay,

To be honest, I’m not against “Free Speech” in the sense of not sharing. Everyone should have their own opinion. So from my view, despite my personal dislike of it (I was watching it for half a year), I’m not against of sharing.

thingsiplay,

I use FreeTube client, which does not have Google account support (that’s one of the reasons to use it actually). But just for commenting and interacting with others, I still open Firefox to just discuss. I hate YouTube, but this is worth it to me.

thingsiplay,

BTW FreeTube blocks YouTube ads too, plus it has integration for SponsorBlock. In case you are not familiar with it, its a community driven extension where Sponsor seqments (which are not detected as ads) are then marked or jumped over. And it has two modes you can switch to, the native mode (which Google still gets your IP but works most of the time. And secondly the Invidious mode, which breaks from time to time but Google doesn’t know anything.

I have an exception for YouTube with uBlock Origin. Because at that time when it started I did not know if account could get banned or not for using it. Since I’m used to watch on alternative clients, I leave it as it is now.

thingsiplay,

Live information from the earth like weather and other data. If its raining in your city, then it will be raining in the game at this place too. Plus the game does not have all other data anyway, because entire earth is too big for your drive.

thingsiplay,

Imagine you would save all YouTube videos on your hard drive. You don’t have enough space for that (and time to download anyway). So the next best thing is to just stream those videos and parts you actually watch.

And this is kind of how this game works; it will only deliver those parts and download in the background (which is called streaming) what you currently visit and need. Because you don’t have enough space on your drive.

thingsiplay,

I hope there is a manual download function for your favorite areas to play them offline, that do not get deleted over time. Kind of how maps on your phone work, just with lot more requirements.

thingsiplay,

I don’t know if it has offline only mode.

thingsiplay, (edited )

BTW this article looks like an ad for Jason Schreier’s new book about this topic, that releases soon and is mentioned as the last sentence in the article with a single link that spans across 4 lines.

Nothing much. Microsoft put out one of the worst Call of Duty games in history (Modern Warfare 3 in 2023) and couldn’t save Overwatch 2 from being totally ruined. Console sales and Game Pass didn’t grow as expected I guess. And then the layoffs… Funny enough the releases on PC and Playstation (by Xbox) doing well. At the moment its a total disaster and we question if Xbox will survive until next gen (off course it will, there is Microsoft behind it). Once again Xbox players are told to wait until next year; basically since the launch of the recent console.

(Note, I don’t hate Xbox and even own the Series S as a backup console if my PC explodes or a game I want to play doesn’t work on Linux. I hate Playstation probably even more for what Sony is doing. Just mentioning this as a context, because I’m so negative in this post towards Xbox, but more specifically Microsoft.)

thingsiplay,

Me: Publishers face 20% game revenue increase, if denuvo DRM wasn’t implemented day 1.

thingsiplay,

It’s probably because people want to buy the game without Denuvo DRM. And if the official way has it and the cracked version, then there is no reason to buy the official version. They should analyze how much the game sales go up, once the official version drops the Denuvo DRM. That’s when I consider it buying or many others as well.

Prediction for next Remaster: Tomb Raider - Underworld (original at 89% sale on Steam for €0.98: store.steampowered.com/…/Tomb_Raider_Underworld/)

I’ve tried to correct the perspective in GIMP. There are probably better quality versions of the image, but I just wanted to have fun.

thingsiplay,

Thank you. :-) I’ll correct edit.

thingsiplay,

The main gimmick is that it has tracking features builtin and will stop alarming when you go out of bed, without interaction. I tracks you in bed. To me this sounds alarming, because it collects data, so you can analyze your sleep, and has connection to the internet. Absolutely nogo.

I can just hit the button manually on my phone and its done. And I can already use any song I want.

thingsiplay,

Is this an out of season alarm fools joke?

thingsiplay,

Me too. I have the “old” versions “Mass Effect 2007”, “Mass Effect 2 2010” and “Mass Effect 2 (2010) Edition” (for some reasons there are two versions of old ME2) on Steam and was about to buy Legendary Edition and finally getting started to play. But I’m not happy with the additional requirements of it, as it requires Origin client and an EA account to play this single player game. This is unacceptable to me. Old versions do not require this.

So after my research and being confused of multiple versions and if the Legendary Edition is worth it, lost interest. But ME2 is still on my list to play soon.

thingsiplay,

I play most PC games without modding, especially because I’m on Linux. I’ve compared and read about the improvements, and to its just minimal changes. Only the first game got huge improvements, but I’m more interested into playing 2 only. And as someone playing lot of old games and emulate old systems, its totally fine with me. I even played GTA 4 (last year and this) without modding on PC, but still have to finish it.

ryujin470, do gaming angielski

In your opinion, what video games have terrible names?

thingsiplay,
  • Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi (PSX, 1997)
thingsiplay,

We got official Red Dead Redemption 1 on PC before GTA 6.

thingsiplay,

Can’t wait to buy the game and never start it at all.

thingsiplay,

Correct. This is just a meme, where people say that with any game we wanted to have for a long time. So it wasn’t a serious statement.

thingsiplay,

You mean to play Linux games through WSL? Well, Microsoft doesn’t have any reason to, as all games are available for Windows. Or do you suggest the Frankenstein’s Gaming playing Linux games with Proton through WSL on Windows? That would be truly marvelous. xD

thingsiplay,

Ah, you mean in a future where Linux overtakes Windows as the primary gaming machine. But hard to believe this will become true in the near future. Especially if we talk about commercial games to abandon Windows. I would like to see such a feature, but doubt it would happen in my lifetime honestly (i’m no longer young BTW). In such a scenario, Microsoft probably would start supporting games with WSL, if they don’t have a different strategy.

thingsiplay,

I actually didn’t know the Steam Linux Runtime was WINE. Nice. (Note, I’m not the author of the video.)

thingsiplay,

The term “Emulator” is not well defined and the boundaries are not always clear. But in computer hardware and software, emulation usually refers to CPU emulation. Overall one could argue that WINE is an emulation, because it emulates a certain “thing”. But as said in computer science it has accepted by most people (for the sake of having categories) that CPU emulation is emulation, and otherwise its not. Especially if we talk in context of videogame emulation. Like Virtual Machines are no emulators, because they do not emulate the CPU itself.

Slightly offtopic: I often discuss and justify why I do not consider FPGA an emulator. Sure it emulates another hardware, but in the terms of console emulation of videogames, FPGA executes the CPU cycles native. There is no middle layer in between that needs to be interpreted, it runs the CPU commands that was “programmed into”. So FPGA is mimicking, not emulating.

Just like with many other words in human language (which also is not clear across all translations and dialects of human language), the term “emulation” is just not 100% defined and there is nobody who has the definitive answer to it. And that’s okay. It’s a “domain specific” language; which means, you have to specify it before in order to make use. Otherwise you can assume it from context its “usual” meaning. Does not mean its clear, but it means nobody has the right to act like having a clear definition and saying anyone else is wrong.

thingsiplay,

Besides those toxic people who claim something and everyone else is wrong, its not too bad. In the end, all it is about is just one tells someone else a specific definition of a word. And in a sense he is always right, because he (or she) is defining it at that moment.

I understand what you are saying there (last paragraph), but, there is context if one says Wine is not an emulator (not because of its name). The reason is, we are talking about software emulation in the sense of gaming. And there are emulators to play videogames literally emulating other systems. And we have other words to make a category for distinguishing reasons such as Virtual Machines or API compatible or ABI compatible too. I’m fully aware of the fuzzyness of the terms. I’m also fully aware what upsets you when people tell others Wine is not an emulator. But they do it with intentions to teach (such as you and me here), at least usually. Trolls aside or “idiots” aside.

So looks like you are right; we agree each other us here.

thingsiplay,

Thanks, I’ll add that link to the post content.

thingsiplay,

Because of idiots like them, either not understanding what woke means, or by taking it to comical extreme, real issues get buried under. I wouldn’t be surprised if this list was created by an Ai or was meant to be funny in the first place. I would say some stuff there has nothing to do with wokeness at all, such as gay relationships is too woke for them. I go this far and say whoever made that list seems to be anti-gay.

And that’s my take, going too extreme is always bad and destroys any nuances and makes real problems hard to find and discuss.

thingsiplay,

Salty developers who got blocked on Twitter, lol. First, who cares what opinion some person has on Twitter. It doesn’t affect or is related to Godot. Without context or being involved, i have to assume the community manager had reason to block those people who got annoying. You guys make problems out of nothing. Also how serious can we take it, if this is documented on knowyourmeme and are events happened on Twitter? About Wokeness of games?

The fork of Godot won’t change anything of this subject. It only supports toxicity towards the developers and splits the community for no reason. Your fork won’t solve the problem that you got blocked in Twitter.

thingsiplay,

A few minutes ago I posted a link to a video (not mine) about every game being woke now (spoiler: its funny): youtu.be/mZH8Fh29Wxc (and for discussion the topic beehaw.org/post/16369830)

thingsiplay,

I’m not Nintendo supporter and play Switch games on emulators. But one justification is, that this is current generation system. And while the developers are not responsible for, this enables easy piracy, and basically each first party game got leaked early and was playable before or shortly after launch. So lot of these people connect the wrong dots and say that the emulator “supports” piracy, which is not true, but depending on the view could be interpreted by some haters.

The Ryujinx isn’t illegal and I am pro emulation (I have terabytes of Roms for all kind of systems) and Open Source. The above statement is not MY justification, but what I think is what most Nintendo supporters will say. I talk about this subject with my bro, watch YouTube videos and read forum comments and that is what I get from them.

DOOM Ported To Run Atop AMD ROCm + LLVM libc (www.phoronix.com) angielski

Now you can play DOOM on your GPU. You are confused? Well this means the CPU is no longer used for the logic of the game, it runs basically entirely on GPU. So the graphics card is not only used for graphics, but the main logic of the game. It just needs a little bit help from CPU to start the process I think....

thingsiplay,

Valve and Steam is actually the best thing happened to PC Gaming and Linux. No thanks, I want Valve and Steam succeed. I’ve seen the same claims over and over again and most of the time its wrong or disingenuous. I’m not saying Valve is a prophet, off course there are things I don’t like about.

But saying Valve is ripping every PC gamer is a lie.

thingsiplay,

I want to give Valve money, not 100% he publisher. Why? Because Valve is actively working on Open Source and improving PC gaming (and even creating new devices and games). Unlike shops like Game Jolt, who just cuts part of the money for selling it on their platform.

thingsiplay,

Where does this sudden obsession with frogs come from at Valve? There is another project from a Valve employee related to frogs as well.

thingsiplay,

Oh man, yes! IceFrog is the one who is behind Deadlock as well. Makes sense with this game to have fun with frogs. And the other projects might be just inspired and the frog becomes a symbol for success or change or whatever it is. Yes, probably related, good point.

90s classic Little Big Adventure's lovely looking remake is out in November - And there's a limited-time demo on Steam (www.eurogamer.net)

The limited-time demo (link for the lazy) has no DRM, so all you need to do to preserve it beyond its expiration date is copy the folder it’s installed to somewhere else. This works with most limited-time demos on Steam....

thingsiplay,

Here is another such list of DRM-free games on Steam: pcgamingwiki.com/…/The_big_list_of_DRM-free_games…

Edit: I think this is an outdated version of the list. The following one is more up to date: pcgamingwiki.com/…/List_of_DRM-free_games_on_Stea…
