Thanks to Sony the prices for videogame hardware and software keeps getting up. Something that never happened before in the history of videogames. At least not by a large main console competitor in the gaming market.

I don’t see any problem here. The length of the main story in an open world game does not reflect how good the world design, the missions, the polish and how big the world actually is. I’m glad that Rockstar does not try to artificially lengthen the main story and makes it as it is intended and written. Too long games are often too long.

What is the problem with the literal “6” figure, that you specifically mention this? I prefer using numerals, but that comes from a programming standpoint and so it becomes the default way of numbering things. Also sorting with roman is also an issue. It’s just a habit.

Why making a problem out of nothing and then asking a question with an implicit attack? That guy just used a numeral, that’s all. There is no deep psychological background and that gamers suddenly have a problem with roman numerals.

I agree with the overall sentiment, but with a butt. If they plan on doing DLC to make the main story shorter, then the game is basically unfinished and you have to pay for the finished product. Now, that’s not always true. Sometimes there are good examples and I think most people agree on the DLCs for Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are prime examples how to do it right. As long as the DLC is not at cost of the main game, I’m fine with it. But as you said, the main story should be long as it should and not longer.

The main money maker will be probably GTA Online 2 and GTA 6 is just the drug to get into the world.

Going back to Yuzu, Nintendo was in Discord and all over the place monitoring and collecting evidence even since Tears of the Kingdom launch. It took almost a year before the final attack with overwhelming number and secured evidence. Nintendo is not fucking around and is serious, that’s for sure. So if Nintendo attacks, they often have a point or (legal) reason to.

That’s why I’m so curious in this case. I would hope that Nintendo being (legally) wrong for once.

Pokemon design isn’t patented, they are secured by copyright. As long as they do not copy a Pokemon design directly, they are safe. Being inspired is not a copyright infringement. Patents usually are about hardware and other mechanical solutions, in example a certain dialog system. And it needs to be patented and all patents are open to see, I think.

While I agree, its still his opinion if Nintendo did anything of value. BTW I played Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom this year on Yuzu. And I’m proud of it. Great games, although with big problems. I would add Super Mario Maker 2 and Super Mario Wonder to the list, and maybe Bayonetta 3, Lugi’s Mansion 3, Splatoon 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and probably a few more.

I’m from Germany too BTW, Hallo. :D My point was to distinguish copyrighted creative work from specific patented ideas. Patents are usually not about how it looks, but solving a specific (mechanical) problem. And they need to be paid and approved manually. While Copyright is automatically active on creation and is about creative work and or art in example. Copyright can can be licensed to any form like MIT. Patents cannot have a specific license like this to make derivatives.

You cannot put a dent into your tv and give it an MIT license. But you can go and patent this specific “Design Patent” (the name is not that bad actually!).

I remember being hyped for the launch of the game, because this looked amazing. It was one of the few live service games I waited for. Then it happened, they went with an exclusivity deal on Epic Games store and it was over for me. And apparently for the game, because it was shutdown as I remember.

I never heard they posted a free version with servers you could host yourself. Why nobody told me! This is actually the best possible case (besides going Open Source) for live service games that shutdown.

My question is, is this game playable on Linux (through Proton)? Does it use Easy Anti Cheat? I don’t know how this works if this is self hosted, so probably not.

I think the Playstation 6 will be cheaper than Playstation 5 Professional. Why? Because its the baseline and not Pro. The reason why the Pro model can be this expensive is, because its an optional hardware and doesn’t even need to sell well. Selling the baseline Playstation 6 unit is crucial for Sony and they need to sell a lot. Also this establishes a new height, which means if the next generation console PS6 is cheaper than PS5 Pro, then it looks like a bargain.

Also the current Yen and price conversions are expensive for Sony, so it depends on the future market if stuff gets cheaper as well. And if there is good competition. At the moment, there is no Xbox competition at Pro model line or even much of at baseline versions.

I don’t think this is just wishful thinking in my opinion. It’s exactly what I think. PS5 Pro is an optional upgrade for enthusiasts. The brand and companies success does not depend on it. I even think the PS6 will be cheaper than PS5 Pro, because it will look like bargain now. And the success of Playstation as a whole depends on how many baseline units are sold. I don’t think that even Sony can afford 700 Dollars (without disc drive) for the PS6.

But off course it depends on future economics situation in the word (Yen conversion) and if there is good competition from Xbox. At that point Microsoft probably has the next generation Xbox Infinite on the market and then it would be tough for Sony not to fight on the price. Probably a wishful thinking on my part too, but also not too unrealistic! Right?^^

Even the bigger model of LCD with 512 GB compared to the cheapest 64 GB model is on sale at the moment, for about 350 Euros (still under 400 US Dollars I think). It’s crazy!

I do emulation since early 2000s (since I have a PC) and its one of the best things not only in gaming, but in computing and technology in general!

If you are new to emulation, then I recommend to use standalone emulators first. There are emulators for single systems, like Snes9x for SNES and others are multi-system emulators, like Mesen or Ares that can play many console systems.

Following is a bit more advanced:

  • RetroArch: My favorite is RetroArch, but that is not recommended if you are just new to emulation and want a simple emulator to access a few games without configuring too much.
  • MAME and FinalBurn: Arcade emulation with MAME in example can also be tedious, because that works a bit different than a normal console emulator.
  • DOSBox: PC emulators for old systems can play old DOS games, but you need to have an understanding how DOS works in order to be able to use it correctly. Because some games require setups in DOS and such. You can also install old Windows versions like Win98 to play Windows games. But you really need to install and handle Windows like a real operating system, and install each game as well.

Playstation 2 is already solid, that’s for sure. Since my new PC from last year, I am also able to emulate Playstation 3 (some claim even the Steam Deck is capable of doing so, but I’m not sure how good). And PSP emulator runs on most computers nowadays. We even enter in emulating a Playstation 4, but off course this is in early stages at the moment.

So yeah, there is lot of Playstation food for the coming years for you. :D Its really exciting. I still need to figure out PS Vita, and didn’t get into it yet. The original Playstation is still my biggest Sony love I have and probably right behind my favorite console, the SNES.

Romhacks are also huge part of why I love the emulation scene. If you allow me to plug an article I wrote, with lot of Romhacks and Mods for NES as a recommendation. There is so much cool stuff out there: …game.blog/…/nes-mods-and-romhacks-collection/

Someone even ported the original NES Super Mario Bros to SNES, and then modified that to add in a Super Mario Maker style editor; on the SNES! I can’t link it here if you are interested, unfortunately I only know a prepatched ROM source for it. And that is not something this community / place allows to link.

Exactly (referring to more complicated), you are right about the architecture. The PS3 is that complicated, not even Sony themselves have a working emulator for their catalog of games in Playstation monthly subscriptions. Sony emulates PS1 and 2, and PS3 is only streaming and PS4 games are directly compatible with PS5. That’s because PS4 and 5 are similar in the architecture and basically a PC (obviously there is more to it, but CPU is similar).

And that’s why the most advanced PS4 emulator, ChadPS4 … I mean ShadPS4 (the community makes jokes and calls it Chad), doesn’t actually emulate the CPU entirely! Because its similar to a PC CPU, it can use lot of instructions directly. There are other PS4 emulators who try to emulate it entirely, like a traditional emulator.

As for PS3, it is still not in a state like PS2 emulator. Some games work fine and I can play lot of them in full speed without major or any issues. It’s under heavy development still. Some games still are totally unplayable. And depending on how heavy a game is, it can be really demanding on the current modern PCs (I know its a vague statement, its hard to make exact statement for situations like these). I think its still a few years away from how the PS2 performs right now. And then the question if anyone wants to port the emulator to a different architecture… phew!

These are pretty good, either from my personal experience or from reading lot of recommendations through forums and friends. The best Shmups on the Switch are mostly ports of existing older games. I’m not sure if you play on another platform too, I just read you have a Switch. I played on emulators on my PC and on Steam, there are a few more games I am not sure if they exist on Switch.

I think easy game modes take away what a great game makes a great game. I’m not sure if I can explain this with words, but if you are going to play on easy, then it means you don’t want to play. At that point, its probably not a game for you. I’m talking across all kind of genres and type of games. However, if a game is unfair or badly designed, that is the moment when I would recommend using easy mode. And it depends on how the difficulty scaling is implemented. Some easy modes are really dumb and take away the core principles of the game, while others are very intelligently realized.

Your example is a great example of what I meant by that. You are not interested into the combat, therefore made it easy so it does not get in your way. You didn’t turn it down because its unfair. What happens is, you are actively playing a game, which you don’t want to. I don’t know what exactly scales in that game, so maybe its not a bad easy mode at all, but can’t judge the game.

I’m currently playing Metal Gear Solid 5 for the first time (just played a few hours on launch and now I’m back to it) on normal difficulty. The game can be brutal at times and there were multiple moments when I almost quit the game. Yet I did not turn easy mode, and now I’m happy that I overcome the challenge naturally. And that’s what I mean. I you turn the game to easy mode, then you get into these habits of not solving the challenges.

But a lot of people are coming to gaming from traditional media where there is no interaction. A lot of those people like the narratives in games, but don’t love beating a challenge. A lot of those people are tired from long days at work and do not get joy from eking out a win. To them, it feels like a chore, and they didn’t get into this to do chores. They got into it to get away from the stress of the world.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. People like you describe don’t want to play the game. There is nothing wrong with that, i just explained when easy mode makes sense or when I recommend it. In this case, people who don’t want to play the game (as intended), can use easy mode.

If you get enjoyment from great game mechanics, more power to you. However, that doesn’t mean those game mechanics are less impactful in story driven games where the gaming is “easier.”

As I said, it depends on the implementation of an easy mode. Some easy modes are bad and ruin the actual gaming experience. In some other cases its actually very well thought out and the game mechanics are supportive in such an easy mode.

In general a situation like with your partner to introduce into gaming is a special case. There are lot of games designed to be easy or adaptive. But the OP here isn’t new to gaming, its a different situation. I was looking from a perspective who plays games.

Yes, removed games are not really removed, just hidden. And for the reader here, we are not talking about hiding in the client. If you go to support page of game at help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithGame and click “I want to permanently remove this game from my account”, then its like you wouldn’t own the game anymore.

Not many know you can go to same page and restore the license. It’s noted that you get the same license of game than before, not a new license. I don’t know why Steam has the permanent removal, if its not permanent at all. But now you know; you can restore. And that is what the user in this post is talking about.

Edit: I thought about why that maybe. It makes sense to keep the license bound to an account, so the key cannot be activated again by someone else. Otherwise people could sell their activated keys like that.

I believe you can still activate keys for delisted games. Meaning if you find a shop that sells them, you might be lucky. I never did that, just read reports of this. So can’t actually verify if this is true. Provided there is no additional third party launcher or activation that hinders this.

But your assumption is that every artist gets the same deal. Some maybe more valuable and expensive than others. Then the question is, if this group was valued very low and that is whats upsetting. But come on, 7500 for lifetime rights is really bad payment. I wonder what the deals with prior games and songs was.

I never saw a launched game unlaunch this quick. We talked about failures that got shutdown 1 year after launch. But now the record is what, 2 weeks? Question is, will they go back to drawing board and make changes to the game for a relaunch, such as a free to play model? Nothing is stated here, so probably not.

I would consider playing this game, if it was playable on Linux (and without a PSN account requirement). But clearly Sony does not care about me.

I am one of the few people who was actually excited about the game since its gameplay trailer. I’m glad the game does not work on Linux and therefore didn’t wasted my 40 Euros. So even if I want give them my money, promote the game for free and play it, I can’t.

I know, but its better than messing up everything into one soup that does not fit anymore. Zelda is a long running series and many more will come. So I at least appreciate that they do respect the history and not ruin everything by putting it into one noodle soup. The new Breath of the Wild era games have barely anything to do with the old games and stand on their own.

I can’t tell you which version is the best for you (and your hardware). The first thing I would lookup if the particular version for the emulator is working well (have in mind, the reports are not always up to date): Dolphin for GameCube, PCSX2 for Playstation 2 and Xemu for Xbox.

Nice write up. It depends on you hardware too (if its strong enough). Some games might be best played on Xbox, so it makes sense to try Xemu. I personally prefer Dolphin and PS2, because they are integrated into RetroArch as cores (in Linux). At least he is looking for the best graphics, and that should be the Xbox versions. But I didn’t try the Prince of Persia games yet.

This depends on the hardware you are playing on, the version of the emulator and the specific game. I don’t have any experience with Prince of Persia games, so cannot make a recommendation. I personally play on RetroArch, which means the PCSX2 core is renamed to LPSX2 and is a little bit lacking behind the standalone emulator. So I would tend to use Dolphin for Gamecube emulation instead. But if you are using standalone emulators, then it might be different story.

When researching the web, people seem to talk about the PS2 versions of the Trilogy being the best. So based on that loose info, I would probably tend to recommend that one. But check out compatibility for each game in the links I gave you.

Price plays a role too, only 17,55 Euros for Squirrel here and Concord 40 Euros, plus 20 for Deluxe.

I was interested into Concord, not gonna lie. But even if I wanted to buy and play the game, accept their terms of usage and create a Sony account, its not playable on Linux. And to be honest, I’m thankful for not being able to waste my money and time.

The gameplay doesn’t look bad to me, I am interested into it. It has way bigger problems, like the unpopular character styles and looks. But what do you mean by “abusive industry practices”? I like the idea of paying upfront and getting the whole game, way better than a Free to play model to me. But I guess that approach isn’t working in today’s world.

But those points are not the reason this game flopped. Lot of games have micro transactions and are popular. Other games require additional account (and even launcher in some cases) and are still popular. While these arguments are in fact negative, they are not the reason the game failed. If Sony comes to this conclusion too, then they will not learn anything from it. So I hope they analyze it better.

In example the initial trailer reveal wasn’t good. Then the characters and the universe it is in isn’t very interesting, huge problem for a hero shooter. Sony completely ignored the critics from beta test phase. The marketing in general was terrible. Game is not playable on Linux either, which would have gave them some marketing push too. And the timing of the launch day was badly chosen too lot of people and news was focusing on Wukong and Deadlock.

There are lot of reasons that are well orchestrated together to fail the game. It’s not as simple as the list you gave (in my opinion). Games with worse industry standards get more popular.
