Bill Bryson, człowiek, który o geografii i historii wie więcej niż połowa Wikipedii, postanowił w pewnym momencie życia, że pójdzie… na spacer. Ale nie taki zwykły spacer do Żabki po kefir. Nie. On poszedł na Appalachian Trail – ponad 3 500 kilometrów przez góry, lasy, błoto i komary wielkości gołębi. Bo czemu nie?
Towarzyszy mu Stephen Katz – stary kumpel, który ma kondycję pieczonego ziemniaka i na każdy kilometr szlaku reaguje tak, jakby ktoś kazał mu przebiec maraton w klapkach. Ich duet to coś pomiędzy "Głupim i głupszym", a "Survivor" w wersji dla nieprzygotowanych. Jeden zna się na mapach, drugi nie potrafi zawiązać sznurówek bez przekleństwa. Efekt? Komedia pomyłek na świeżym powietrzu.
Bryson w swoim stylu miesza fakty, anegdoty i sarkazm w taki sposób, że nawet opowieść o geologii Appalachów potrafi rozbawić bardziej niż niejeden kabaret. A kiedy już myślisz, że gorzej być nie może – pojawia się niedźwiedź. Lub coś, co może być niedźwiedziem. Albo chociaż szopem w złym humorze.
Nie spodziewaj się jednak poradnika „Jak przetrwać w dziczy” – to raczej „Jak nie umrzeć ze śmiechu, próbując przetrwać w dziczy (i uniknąć halucynacji z odwodnienia)”. Bryson zgrabnie kpi z samego siebie, z amerykańskiej obsesji na punkcie natury, i z faktu, że nikt tak naprawdę nie wie, dlaczego ktoś miałby iść przez pół kontynentu z własnej woli.
Podsumowując: "Piknik z niedźwiedziami" to książka o wędrówce, w której najważniejszym celem jest nie zwariować – ani przez przyrodę, ani przez własnego towarzysza. Świetna rzecz dla tych, którzy kochają podróże… z bezpiecznej kanapy.
