DarkThoughts, w RTR#24 Setting up test environments for federation development, comment wrapping

Pretty much was able to disable one of the old userscripts I use for kbin now.

skulblaka, w RTR#24 Setting up test environments for federation development, comment wrapping
@skulblaka@kbin.social avatar

Hey Ernest, thanks for the hard work. I just wanted to mention that I think comment wrapping is still a little broken on mobile. It separates by color, but indentation doesn't exist and it's pretty difficult to figure out who is responding to who in a crowded thread. Example photo attached.

All things considered though, a relatively minor issue. But one I'd like to see addressed (especially if the effort is being made now to introduce / fix comment wrapping.)

If there's a better place to report bugs than here please let me know.

@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Thanks, I'll check it.

Thanks brother. You're a real one. Keep it up! We all appreciate you very much.

@ernest The thing that's different from email for social media is moderation, which is why the host matters. Also, for both email and social media, the host matters for other reasons: you don't want someone who's going to lose all your email by going out of business suddenly, or who has poor uptime, etc etc.
Saying "the host doesn't matter" caused a lot of people to bounce off the Fediverse when they first tried it, because they wound up on hosts with terrible or no moderation.

What exactly is the Turbo Mode? I turned it on, but can't see any difference in behavior on my end, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

ContentConsumer9999,

It makes it so that you don't load a new page each time you click on something.

Chozo,

Ahh, okay I see what you mean now. Interesting. It actually makes page loads slightly slower on my old-ass Chromebook (but that's on me; this machine is a few years out of support for updates).

I wonder if this is better or worse for server performance, though.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

This may be more noticeable on weaker internet connections. There is also browser-side caching, so it may not work perfectly everywhere. Currently, this is an experimental version. For the server, it's marginally better, but there are no significant differences, is more about the user experience.

Chozo,

Good to know, thanks!

Hey @ernest, I noticed that the new comment markers are rather hard to see on some themes. They work perfectly on the Tokyo Night theme, but did you test them on others? This is how it looks for me using the Dark theme. I also tried the Light theme with the same issue.

edit: Forgot to mention, I did turn off all my userscripts and custom css.

Ooh fancy. Doesn't quite work with infinite scrolling though.

Nothing will escape you, as usual. I'm adding it to the todo list, even though I was planning to skip filters for now, but... it's actually a pretty nice feature.

Fascinating update. Microblogging seems to less important to /kbin users in my experience, but I find this aggregate view very useful. What is the fav change you're referring to? Bookmarks will be pretty handy--I've seen people asking for this a decent amount. I realize this is a test version, but it would be pretty cool if the aggregate view will allow one to combine magazines in the future. Not urgent of course, but it would really help alleviate how fragmented some communities feel at times. That being said, really impressed with the consistent communication and development on /kbin, Ernest. Looking forward to that next post of yours.

I jot down all ideas for later, thanks ;)

I only meant to adjust the navigation after click on *

The aggregate view is really nice, especially on my sub page! This feature should hopefully be even better with the upcoming federation improvements assuming they'll tackle microblog federation, as that's quite iffy right now.

Since aggregate view essentially just combining threads and microblogs, it'd be best to have it as an option on the header alongside Threads, Microblog, and People. Maybe call it "All Content" or something like that to make sure it's clear what it is. Going with this, it'd also be nice to be able to toggle the default view (Threads, Microblog, All Content, or maybe People) in the settings.

ETA: Also noticed that the color of the new comment marker has been changed to be a lot less obtrusive (at least on darker themes). Very nice! Might be a good idea to have the color change with the theme.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Good point. If the feature is thoroughly tested, I will make it more visible.

The aggregate view sounds exactly like what I was silently hoping for one day. Exciting! Is there a way to use this test version via the PWA on my phone?

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Just select * from the Channel menu at the top of the page (next to the username), and then navigate/filter as usual within the aggregate view.

If you do it from this thread, it will activate the aggregate magazine view; if you do it from the main page, you'll get the main channel.

ContentConsumer9999, w RTR#27 Aggregate view, work on federation

I really like this but currently it seems really difficult to activate it. Could you maybe turn this * button to a switch to indicate when it's on or off and to make sure it doesn't turn off when switching pages?

ContentConsumer9999,

To add to this, can you let us make our the aggregate view?

Awesome work as always! The new all content page is much more convenient and I don’t think I've ever seen someone be this considerate while advertising (if you could even call it that). One thing I've noticed is that the support us part of the sidebar is somehow in French for me. I don't have any language settings set to French and this is the first time I've encountered such an .

Curious to see, than https://kbin.social/* consists entirely of threads, and https://karab.in/* almost entirely of microblog.

asterisk breaks a link.

Working links:
kbin.social, karab.in

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

On kbin.social, posts featuring Lemmy posts receive more upvotes, and it defaults to sorting by "Hot content." For a more accurate representation, sorting by "Active" or "Newest" or */sub is recommended. On the other hand, karab.in primarily federates with Polish Mastodon instances, and szmer.info is not as popular, hence the difference.

@ThatOneKirbyMain2568@kbin.social avatar

Awesome stuff! I'm loving how these features are shaping up.

A few further suggestions on the aggregate view:

  • Like Threads and Microblog, All Content should have a number next to it (just the number of threads + the number of microblog posts).
  • I think the homepage setting should be split into "homepage feed" (all, subscriptions, moderated, or favorites) and "homepage view" (all content, threads, microblogs). That'd make the current dropdown a lot less cluttered.
  • It'd also be helpful to have a "default view" setting that applies when you go to any magazine or feed. For example, if I go to /m/Kurzgesagt and my default view is set to All Content, it'll start on the All Content view.

Should you keep the homepage setting as it is, there are a few issues with the dropdown:

  • When you select something, the only text that shows is the feed, not the view.
  • When you select something, the option that you currently have saved moves to the bottom of the dropdown.
  • Not sure if this has always been a thing, but the dropdown uses "Subscriptions" while the channel list in the header uses "Subscribed".

ETA: One more issue I forgot to mention — when you click All Content on the favorites, moderated, or subscribed feed, it sends you to the all feed.
