TheAndrewBrown, w The Witcher producer blames Americans and social media for Netflix series' simplified plot
@TheAndrewBrown@lemmy.world avatar

Game of Thrones was the most popular show in the world not too long ago and is more complicated. House of the Dragon is also complicated and did well just last year. There have been tons of complicated dramas that have been popular. This is just a dumb excuse

Captain_Ender, w The Witcher producer blames Americans and social media for Netflix series' simplified plot

He's really blaming the execs and showrunner between the lines I think. Saying she had to "make tough decisions" means "she fucked up". It's Netflix and the showrunner who think they need to go to the lowest common denominator with scripts to appeal to Americans, especially hard fantasy/sci-fi. So he's kinda pissed at both groups really not just audiences.

It's a shame because other works like GOT 1-5 show the opposite. Go for complex, go for the source material, and audiences will be patient for it.

Madison_rogue,
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

Then blame execs and showrunners, not the audience. American audiences are savvier than he thinks, just because he had one pitch that didn't fare well with American audiences doesn't mean that they won't embrace more complicated elements of The Witcher.

Plus it just sounds sad; blame audiences for something you, as a producer, can't effectively produce.

masterspace,

He wasn’t showrunner, just EP on 16 episodes, and he can’t burn the showrunner or Netflix if he wants more work in the industry.

Madison_rogue,
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

I didn't say he was a showrunner.

triprotic, w Xbox Is Suspending Players Caught Using Emulators

Looks like this is an issue for retail mode only, if you’re using developer mode to run emulators you shouldn’t have issues:

“Players could pay a one-time fee to get a developer mode attached to their console. From there, you could gain access to emulators. In fact, it looks like that option is still readily available. You will lose out on features made only for retail mode, which could mean going back and forth between the modes.”

CmdrShepard,

“Pay us $25 extra to use your own hardware or we’ll ban you!” ~Microsoft

triprotic,

I mean, if you want to do emulation there’s better/cheaper ways to do it than an Xbox, but at least the option is there in some form.

CmdrShepard,

I totally agree but it just reminded me of a discussion I had with someone here a couple weeks ago where they talked about the “great advancements” Microsoft has made in the console space compared to Sony and this was one of their primary arguments.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

To be fair, is there any amount of extra money you could pay on PlayStation to do the same thing?

rafoix,

Theres better but there really isn’t cheaper. An Xbox Series S is $300. That’s a controller and a very relatively good APU even if it’s artificially limited.

I have a MiSTer FPGA and it definitely cost more than $300 and it cannot emulate anything newer that PS1 or Sega Saturn.

Homeschooled316, w Assassin's Creed Mirage will take 25-30 hours to complete – and that's if you're a completionist

I think too many people have tricked themselves/each other into thinking long games are bad because they are long. No, it’s because 95% of the time (moreso today than in the past), a high hour-to-complete time signals a game with 10 hours or content stretched out to an absurd extreme, often in support of MTX/live service type features available ay launch.

An 80 hour game can be good if it has 80 hours of actual content. A 25 hour game can be bad if it’s still just 3-4 hours of real game stretched out to 25-30.

rustyricotta,

Very true.

Some of my recent games below. Good long games:

  • Elden Ring (~120 hours first playthrough)
  • Divinity 2 (some parts do slog)

Bad long games:

  • CrossCode (I know this game is well loved, so a bit of a hot take). I did complete it, but I would have been far happier if it were half as long.

@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

As someone that trudged through Odyssey and has been really enjoying Valhalla despite its immense size, I welcome this change. Good Lord these games are huge.

CoderKat,

I enjoy the scale of large games, but Odyssey and Valhalla was too much even for me. I’d like maybe half that (which would still be at least 50 hours I suspect).

Chet_Awesomelad, w Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director wants series vets and newbies alike to be surprised by its twist and turns, seeing the remake as more than 'just a callback'
@Chet_Awesomelad@kbin.social avatar

I'm still unreasonably mad that they marketed the first game as a remake - even literally titling it 'FF7 Remake' - and then it turns out it isn't a remake at all, it's some poorly-written Kingdom Hearts nonsense about how bad it is to be restricted to telling the story you're fated to tell and how you need to break free from the shackles of destiny. I can't imagine a bigger "fuck you" to fans of the original game. If they hated the idea of having to remake the original story so much, then they should have just not made it!

thingsiplay,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

It should have been called Reimagination to set expectations for existing fans. FF7 original is probably my favorite game of all time (tie with FF6) and I still did not play Remake (lost interest waiting too long and then asking price on Steam is 80 Euros, fuck you SquareEnix!).

But you know, I am not entirely opposed to changes in story and character handling, if its done well. They even changed up the battle system. To me this is an opportunity to re-live the game, to experience it with new perspective and see details I could not before. If it was exactly the same game with better graphics, that's just playing the same game again. But the Remake... ahem, I meant Reimagination, is different. And you know what, I kinda like this idea. But off course, I still did not play and don't know how bad it is. And oh god, I hope they don't change the important story line in part 2... this would be a huge fuck.

TwilightVulpine,

It would have been nice to have a proper Remake but this is not bad per se, though I'm not a fan of how much it's being dragged out, and that Vincent and Cid still won't be playable still.

Computerchairgeneral, w Spec Ops: The Line's sudden removal from Steam baffles its director: 'Why has this happened?'

An issue with the soundtrack is the only thing that makes sense, but unfortunately I don't know if 2K would be willing to spend the money to renew the license and keep the game on Steam. At least it's still for sale on GOG, like the article mentions, and it's eighty percent off.

Zahille7,

Thank you

Computerchairgeneral,

No problem. Unfortunately, looks like GOG had to delist it as well. Seems the only way to play it now is through a physical copy and Xbox backwards compatibility.

KyoStarr, (edited ) w Multiplayer being 'considered' for Cyberpunk 2077 sequel says CD Projekt
@KyoStarr@kbin.social avatar

I'm so tired of the AAA hype machine. Who cares, since this game is years away from a release and probably 3-4 years of post-release patches from being decent.

I thought CD Projekt would have learned from Cyberpunk's incredibly prolonged marketing campaign and it's remarkably shoddy release but I guess not.

biscoot, w Monster Hunter Rise update adds Enigma DRM, breaks Steam Deck compatibility

I hope they revert the change. But in the meantime, I’m adding to the pile of negative reviews on Steam.

SuiXi3D, w CD Projekt narrative director declares Cyberpunk 2077 'just a warm-up' as work kicks off on the sequel
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

Yes, let’s blame all the early issues with the game on the narrative director. 🙄

nyahlathotep,
@nyahlathotep@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don’t think anyone blames the story or the narrative director, I’m just leery about starting up the hype train again.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted, w Naughty Dog Cancels The Last of Us Online Multiplayer Game

Highly anticipated by whom? My understanding was that most people thought it was a stupid cash-grab into the live-service genre. Or has my understanding been wrong?

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

That's why they decided to kill it, but people who were interested in it had some reason for hope.

On the PS3 it was basically a team death match with the mechanics of the game. That's all it needed to be and it was fun.

Now people get angry if the game doesn't have support with content updates for at least 3 years and if it's not monetized then there's no point for the publisher to do it (and the inclusion of it angers the players). It's rough.

However in the case of the PC version, I think it's for the best. If Sony wanted it to be profitable beyond the games price point, that means mtx. If there is development happening on mtx then it's budget not going into the development of the game, which considering the state of the game that did get released... Well...

WHYAREWEALLCAPS,

Now people get angry if the game doesn't have support with content updates for at least 3 years

I mean, have you seen the state game studios are releasing games in now? It's like 3+ years of updates just to get it to the place it was supposed to be at release.

novamdomum, w The Crew franchise has a troubled future after The Crew 1 delisting - GameScout
@novamdomum@kbin.social avatar

I recently re-installed The Crew 2 because I wanted to start a new character and start the story again from scratch. Unfortunately I'd forgotten that YOU CAN'T START AGAIN (Jackie Chan Confused Meme). Because of these ridiculous shenanigans of theirs your progress is inextricably tied to your online account. They have literally built a system that limits replayability. Bravo.

gpowerf,
@gpowerf@mastodon.social avatar

@novamdomum @wave_walnut That's awful! 😔 yet another way to push you to the new game.

theodewere, w Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 5 is a whopper of an update with an epilogue, two new modes, and more
@theodewere@kbin.social avatar

Patch 5 also includes improved inventory access, allowing you to manage the inventory of all companions from one single UI, regardless of whether they’re currently in the active party.

that's a nice one
