FfaerieOxide, w Japan: Super Mario Bros Movie has now topped $100M and is 6th highest grossing Hollywood movie of all-time
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

The coolest thing about the Japanese Super Mario Bros Movie is that (to the best my knowledge) Mamoru Miyano has never appeared in public wearing cloths that signal support for fascist militias.

You can't say that about the English dub.

Madison_rogue, w Larian 'Cooking' Ability to Change Baldur's Gate 3 Character Appearance In-Game - IGN
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

It took Bungie years to do this for Destiny; Larian immediately begins to work on it in a couple weeks after release.

I love this studio, and how it's upending the AAA gaming standard. About time. I'm definitely buying it when it comes out on the PS5.

ono, w Baldur’s Gate 3 is Causing Some Developers to Panic

I have no doubt that the game is outstanding, but after seeing headlines like this all week, it really smells like an advertising campaign.

Chozo,

It might be, but what would that change about the story? Unless Larian is paying other studios to say that they're panicking (which I doubt, for a million reasons), then I'm not so sure there's any difference to the situation.

luthis,

Not advertising. These are the Steam reviews. It’s organic hype. It’s just wierd because we have had such a shit time with AAA games for years.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive, but I hope you’re right.

bionicjoey,

It is actually that good. First game to fully recapture the magic of Dragon Age Origins

Sites like IGN must follow gaming trends to survive. BG3 is a huge release and I've been seeing this story everywhere for weeks, increasing in frequency.

Chet_Awesomelad, w Baldur's Gate 3 developer demands full list of uncredited translation staff "immediately"

How shitty do you need to be to make your workers complete a ton of work on a project and then only credit the executives who didn't even do the actual work? Altagram is run by garbage people.

technologicalcaveman, w Nintendo has filed over 30 Tears of the Kingdom patents, registering things you wouldn't even notice in the game

Everytime I hear something new about nintendo I like them less. Which sucks because I know there's no chance of kirby going anywhere else without emulation.

NixDev, w Nintendo has filed over 30 Tears of the Kingdom patents, registering things you wouldn't even notice in the game

Would these parents hold up in court?

Nick,

Assuming that these patents are all granted, courts will generally treat them as though they are valid and enforceable. However, the bar for getting a patent is generally rather difficult, so it could be the case that none of these patent prosecutions are successful at all. If they get these patents, all Nintendo would have to do is file an infringement against allegedly infringing parties, and then the onus is almost entirely on the responding party to prove either that they did not violate the patent, or that the patent was invalid in the first place. Nintendo loses almost nothing in trying to enforce a patent, and has plenty to gain from the chilling effect that prolonged litigation could have.

Gorejelly, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president
@Gorejelly@kbin.social avatar

I personally just don’t buy Squeenix software any longer. They’ve abandoned too many titles (mostly on mobile, but elsewhere too) and I just don’t feel good about giving them money. Last one I purchased was FF14 for the PC (which is one of the best MMOs I’ve played).

That’s just my take on things. If it happens to show up on Epic for free or Game Pass (unlikely on both, I know), then sure I’ll grab it to try.

Athena5898, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

It's Square, they wouldn't of been happy unless it sold as much as Tear of The Kingdom

Nefyedardu,

Final Fantasy in it's heyday outsold Zelda by a lot

Homeschooled316,

The PS1 also sold the N64 3:1, But FF7, the highest selling FF game, only sold about 9m to OoT’s 7m. Relative to console sales, oot thrashed final fantasy 7. Of course, it helps that they cranked these games out way faster than Zelda back then.

The current situation is similar, except the switch is wildly more prevalent than the PS5. There is almost 1 TotK sold for every 6 switch units, which is utterly insane when you consider how many ignored/lost/broken units are probably out there. By contrast, there is about 1 FF16 for every 10 PS5 units out there.

Nefyedardu,

These are the numbers I found for 5th and 6th gen games:
FFVII: 10.0
FFVIII: 8.6
FFX: 8.5
Ocarina of Time: 7.60
Wind Waker: 6.79
Majora's Mask: 6.82

FFIX: 5.5
FFX-2: 5.4
Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages: 3.99
Minish Cap: 1.76

So maybe "a lot" is an overstatement, but they did generally sell more. You have a point regarding sales-per-console, but also remember PS1 had over 1900 games to N64s 388. That's way more competition for third party FF games to get sales. Many people that buy Sony consoles don't even look twice at JRPGs, whereas most people that buy Nintendo consoles know day one they are going to get the latest Mario and Zelda.

Athena5898,

sure, but the series and Square are by far very different than they were in it's heyday. Square has really been racking its players over the coals with shitty tactics lately and has signaled pretty loud and clear that they don't care about games at all and are just trying to get money out of you (I mean all major companies are like that, the others are just better at it and shut up about it) I said Tears of the Kingdom because it's the current high selling game, that's what they wanted this game to be and I honestly don't know why you'd even hope for something like that when handling business the way they do. (as people have mentioned they'd play it but do not have the system.)

Nefyedardu,

No I agree. The fact that Final Fantasy used to outsell Zelda and now sells 1/3rd of it should speak volumes about how Square has handled the franchise. Gaming has only gotten bigger since the late 90s.

Athena5898,

agreed

5redie8,

I’m kinda surprised to see the hate this game is getting.

I’m probably 80% ish of the way through and while I wouldn’t say it’s my GOTY or anything, it’s fun. I appreciate the different direction they took, and the combat is just straight up fun.

The side quests do suck. Some of the zones are absolutely bland and consist of nothing but wide open space and random enemies just kinda… peppered in there. The Eikon battles are cool and pretty and badass but gameplay-wise they are boring. So yeah, it’s not a masterpiece, but I’m enjoying it.

some_guy, (edited )
@some_guy@kbin.social avatar

Lol nobody in this thread is hating on it. You must be seeking out negative opinions if you’re seeing them, because everything Ive chanced across has been middle of the road to positive about the game.

Nefyedardu,

Wasn't a fan of the gameplay at all. It's in a kind of no man's land where it isn't an RPG but it's also nowhere near as good as DMC or Bayonetta. It's just so damn easy to button mash through everything. There is depth there if you want to explore it but it's a flaw in the game design that you are not actually incentivized to do that.

I blame the fact that the producer doesn’t give a single fuck about the story.

downpunxx, w The Witcher producer blames Americans and social media for Netflix series' simplified plot
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

While I've enjoyed seasons past, including the animated bit they put out that one year, after watching an episode and a half of the first half of this last season 3 a couple things became clear, there are too many subplots/characters to the point that I simply tune out all the names and don't care, focusing instead on the main three, and lastly that I'm bored. It's become something tiresome, and I shut it off after a couple episodes, maybe I'll revisit, probably not.

holycrapwtfatheism,

It doesn't get better. S3 is so far detached from what season 1 brought to the table as to be mockery. The acting feels so forced in this one.

_haha_oh_wow_,
@_haha_oh_wow_@kbin.social avatar

That's a shame, but this kind of shit is why I cancelled my Netflix and never looked back.

CybranM,

Yeah same, I was really hoping the witcher show would turn out great but then when they first showed the nilfgaard armours before S1 I lost hope and my fear turned out to be justified.

CosmoNova, w The Witcher producer blames Americans and social media for Netflix series' simplified plot

The tale of producers dumbing down plot and dialogue for greater main stream appeal is as old as show business. And from my experience said producers are almost always wrong. Sorry pal, but you can’t blame social media for something your peers have always been doing.

EvaUnit02, w Disco Elysium for $12 may be the best $12 you ever spend on games in your life
@EvaUnit02@kbin.social avatar

I couldn't get in to this game, myself. Granted, due to that, I've only played about an hour of it but this game felt much more like a Visual Novel than an RPG, to me. Stats seemed to have no bearing on anything other than what the narrative decided they have a bearing on. It was therefore, very difficult to figure out who my character was. Otherwise, you're just clicking on things and reading reams of text.

I get that they were trying to go for a more tabletop version of an RPG but without a DM, I find that near impossible to translate 1:1. I would have preferred a more Baldur's Gate approach to the game.

Steampunk,
@Steampunk@kbin.social avatar

Stats are very important and can cause a playthrough to be very different. I can say more about it if you're interested.

Poggervania,
@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

It’s more akin to Planescape: Torment than something like Baldur’s Gate. The game is dense with writing and dialogue, and the majority of it is derived from your stats. Granted, there are a couple of skill checks that you can’t fail due to being story important, but it’s only those two specific instances - everything else is heavily stat-based. There’s also ideologies that the game tracks, so you can be an egotistic superstar cop, a doomsaying apocalypse cop, a normal cop, or even a super-political cop that becomes more drilled down if you want to engage in the fascist, communist, moderate, and/or liberal aspects of the game - and the game does respond to that, including noting how you can be both a communist and a fascist, or some other combination of ideologies.

To help put it in perspective, your stats are, quite literally, your character’s brain. Having low stats doesn’t really impact the game, but you also can become sort of neurotic with high stats - which does have its upsides and downsides (except Encyclopedia, it will drown you in world-building exposition that doesn’t really help and drags out conversations at the higher levels). It’s much more “role-playing” and less “game”.

HidingCat,

Really sounds like it's not the game for you. You want combat and big numbers, which isn't what Disco Elysium is about.

I'm still halfway through a playthrough, but it really is a great RPG, with an interesting narrative.

kyub, w The Witcher producer blames Americans and social media for Netflix series' simplified plot

This is just damage control, there doesn’t have to be meaning to these words other than a try of appeasing the fans. That said though, it’s ironic how the Witcher games at least (haven’t read the books yet) have quite mature and well-written content compared to most other games, so they’re like the opposite of what he’s trying to say here and people LOVE the games for that. So it’s literally the opposite that’s true. If you put out over-simplified garbage, you will not create anything good with that kind of ingredients.
