Harlan_Cloverseed, (edited ) w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president
@Harlan_Cloverseed@kbin.social avatar

That’s what Square gets for failing to read the room. Nobody wants a DMC-like. If they had made it a Souls-like people would love it. Also, this exclusivity bullshit makes you irrelevant. Make me wait years for PC? I can wait longer for a sale. Or forever.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I think the reviews have shown that a lot of people wanted the DMC stuff. But there are only so many PS5s out there, and we live in a world where PC market share has been steadily rising for over a decade.

triprotic, w Xbox Is Suspending Players Caught Using Emulators

Looks like this is an issue for retail mode only, if you’re using developer mode to run emulators you shouldn’t have issues:

“Players could pay a one-time fee to get a developer mode attached to their console. From there, you could gain access to emulators. In fact, it looks like that option is still readily available. You will lose out on features made only for retail mode, which could mean going back and forth between the modes.”

CmdrShepard,

“Pay us $25 extra to use your own hardware or we’ll ban you!” ~Microsoft

triprotic,

I mean, if you want to do emulation there’s better/cheaper ways to do it than an Xbox, but at least the option is there in some form.

CmdrShepard,

I totally agree but it just reminded me of a discussion I had with someone here a couple weeks ago where they talked about the “great advancements” Microsoft has made in the console space compared to Sony and this was one of their primary arguments.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

To be fair, is there any amount of extra money you could pay on PlayStation to do the same thing?

rafoix,

Theres better but there really isn’t cheaper. An Xbox Series S is $300. That’s a controller and a very relatively good APU even if it’s artificially limited.

I have a MiSTer FPGA and it definitely cost more than $300 and it cannot emulate anything newer that PS1 or Sega Saturn.

Turkey_Titty_city, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

FF games have been crap since 10. I bought 15 on discount and was completely disappointed at how bland and lifeless the entire experience was. They have taken the series too far into MMO land, and need to go back to focusing on a good story with good characters, rather than a 'open world' with fancy graphics and lifeless characters.

13 was also a incomprehensible joke of a story, which they padded out to become even more absurd with the sequels.

soapysloth73,

It’s interesting you say that because this entry isn’t particularly “open world”. It’s actually fairly linear with a focus on the story and characters.

The MMO comparison is still fair though because the zones are very reminiscent of FF14. They all connect to each other and can be re-visited, but you’re not really free roaming a giant open world.

Side quests are also 14-like and I don’t mean that as a compliment. Go to A to talk to B. Go to C to talk to D. That can mostly be skipped though.

“nooooooo turn-based combat is outdated and a limitation of old hardware, players don’t want it”

meanwhile, Baldur’s Gate 3…

Nefyedardu,

Yeah it makes no sense. "Let's ditch turn-based combat for and even more niche genre, character action! Surely this will make us more money, right?"

ophy,

A Spinoff CRPG Final Fantasy game would actually be really interesting, and a funny way to go full circle with how much the original FF1 drew from the likes of DnD.

ophy,

They have taken the series too far into MMO land, and need to go back to focusing on a good story

You say that as though FF14 doesn’t have one of the best stories of modern Final Fantasy games.

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

You're not wrong, but a lot of people aren't willing to invest the subscription fee and the hundreds of hours they'd need to see that for themselves. And even as someone who's all caught up on 14, I honestly can't blame them. Time is precious, and it's asking for a lot.

Raji_Lev,
@Raji_Lev@kbin.social avatar

To be fair, that has at least as much to do with the last few entries setting the bar so low. And even then FF14 drops a few stinkers here and there cough Company of Heroes/Titan cough Paladin questline cough

Wouldn’t it have been a surprise if it didn’t have them? The way AC was monetized in the past I’d be shocked if they switched back from that without a huge backlash

Also only releasing on one console is a relict of the past and misses out on so many sales.

We have the technology to compile to every current gen console + pc with the right engines. Square should release their games for all consoles at once.

combustible_lemon_engineer,

For Series X sure. Given it performance issues on PS5 getting it to run on the Series S might have been pretty challenging.

Darkaga,

And they're not allowed to release it unless on the X if didn't run on the S. See: Baulder's Gate 3

Neato,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

But then how will Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo ensure you have to buy their console to play their IPs?

spike,
@spike@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Actual Good Hardware for a reasonable price. Or gimmick control schemes like the ps vita, Wii (U) or occasionally the Switch. I loved the first “The World Ends With You” on the NDS, tried emulating it, but the control scheme without a touch screen and the physical buttons are so weird, I bought a 3DS to relive that masterpiece since my DS Lite died.

QuarterlySushi,

While it’s a little more complicated than just compiling the code for multiple platforms, I do agree that the effort would have been worth it

Aussiemandeus, w 'We haven't started on an expansion' to Baldur's Gate 3, Larian says, but it's not completely off the table
@Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone avatar

Even a D&D campaign at this level is hard to DM, I cant imagine the complexity in trying to really gameify this when especially at the end your players are gods.

Cast wish, may as well just let players write their own code for what they want.

Sure bigger stronger enemies are available but parties become so powerful i can’t see it being easy.

Madison_rogue,
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

I would say just leave those aspects out of the game, or put strict limitations on their usage. You could isolate higher magic abilities to specific items (e.g. deck of many things).

It is complex, however I think if you look to games like Neverwinter as a template for moving forward (absent microtransactions).

Volkditty, w Baldur’s Gate 3 Now One of the Biggest Steam Games Ever - IGN

Are Steam achievements broken for anyone else? All the ones I've unlocked are showing as "0.1% of players have this," even things like finishing the tutorial. Seems unlikely.

iso, w 'We haven't started on an expansion' to Baldur's Gate 3, Larian says, but it's not completely off the table

I’d actually rather love some sort of different campaign or some adventure packs, similar to how D&D does it with their expansion books.

Either that or a great mod tool that would allow for something like that. Doesn’t even need support for added races, classes or traits. Just a map editor with a mob editor slapped on top would be a gamechanger

5e wasn't tested past level 10. It's incredibly unbalanced. But I'm confident Larian could figure out a way for it to feel good.

RandallFlagg, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

I’m interested in playing this but I don’t own a PS5 and I’m not buying a whole console for one game. They would have gotten a day 1 sale out of me if they released it on PC.

CIWS-30,

Knowing them, they'll probably do it. It'll just take a year or so.

Edit: that said, they should've done it to start with, and not kept it off of X-box. They're killing their brand and mindshare here.

stopthatgirl7,

Originally, they did plan to release it on PS5 and PC. My guess is Sony made a timed exclusivity deal with them, which Sony had done with companies before. SE shout themselves in the foot by taking it.

QuantumField,

Ditto for me. I have all Final Fantasy games released on PC, but I can’t justify buying a PS5 for a single game. I’ve chosen to watch a let’s play of the game. Glad I did because it’s definitely not a Final Fantasy I’d play a second time.

Fermiverse, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

I passed because it looked like FF DMC edition to me, not like a FF.

QuarterlySushi,
@QuarterlySushi@kbin.social avatar

It pretty much is, but if you like DMC then you’d probably enjoy this combat too. The plot is.. extremely FF. For better or worse.

pm_me_your_puppies, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president
@pm_me_your_puppies@kbin.social avatar

I’m kinda surprised to see the hate this game is getting.

I’m probably 80% ish of the way through and while I wouldn’t say it’s my GOTY or anything, it’s fun. I appreciate the different direction they took, and the combat is just straight up fun.

The side quests do suck. Some of the zones are absolutely bland and consist of nothing but wide open space and random enemies just kinda… peppered in there. The Eikon battles are cool and pretty and badass but gameplay-wise they are boring. So yeah, it’s not a masterpiece, but I’m enjoying it.

some_guy, (edited )
@some_guy@kbin.social avatar

Lol nobody in this thread is hating on it. You must be seeking out negative opinions if you’re seeing them, because everything Ive chanced across has been middle of the road to positive about the game.

Nefyedardu,

Wasn't a fan of the gameplay at all. It's in a kind of no man's land where it isn't an RPG but it's also nowhere near as good as DMC or Bayonetta. It's just so damn easy to button mash through everything. There is depth there if you want to explore it but it's a flaw in the game design that you are not actually incentivized to do that.
