Metaright, w Miyamoto wonders why Pikmin hasn't sold more and why people think the games are difficult
@Metaright@kbin.social avatar

I don't know if difficult is the word I'd use, but I couldn't stand Pikmin 3, and I imagine I couldn't stand Pikmin 1 either, because of the time limits. I want to be able to take my time, strategize, and explore at my own pace. It ruins the fun to know that I only have 30 days, or that I'll lose if I don't collect X amount of fruit per day.

Pikmin 2 is so far the best game in the series, in my opinion. If I want to spend three days building up my Pikmin army and stockpiling the sprays, I can do it without worry that I'm running behind now. I don't need to rush through the game, and can take it at my own pace.

If only there were a mod for Pikmin 3 that removes the juice mechanic, or gives unlimited juice from the start.

Helldiver_M,
@Helldiver_M@kbin.social avatar

Never played pikmin 3, but I had a funny experience with the day limit in pikmin 1. You have way more than enough time to complete the game in the day limit, even if you play very suboptimally.

Despite that, in my initial playthrough I still hated it for all the reasons you listed. Theoretically, I could see how a day-limit could be good for the game. Adding tension and the like. But on that first playthrough when I had no idea how much time is worth, I always felt the need to rush. As it turned out, I could have easily taken a few days to just explore or strategize. But there's no way to know that at the start. Maybe it could work better if the game could communicate somehow if you're ahead of schedule or something.

Ubisoft rehashing the same old game with abusive mtx? Who'd have thunk it?!

sunbeam60, w Nintendo has filed over 30 Tears of the Kingdom patents, registering things you wouldn't even notice in the game

This just ain’t how patent law works.

Nintendo has IP lawyers. They have to, at their scale, because they will constantly be bombarded by patent trolls, licensing companies etc. trying to extract profit out of Nintendo. So, like any other large business, they hire IP lawyers to protect themselves.

Most patent disagreements are resolved by cross-licensing. That’s where one business says, in response to a law suit, “oh, but you’re actually using 6 of our patents, so maybe we can come to an agreement”. A patent is both a shield and a sword. Even against trolls they can be useful, as they can be used to argue against troll arguments, if it gets to court, or pull in other business to the defense, if helpful.

IP lawyers know this. So they extract every patent they can out of everything a company does, as a way to build up the IP bank.

So, I highly doubt “Nintendo wants to prevent others” bla bla. It’s just IP lawyers doing their job.

I’ve sat in MANY discovery sessions with IP lawyers where they push and prod at software I, or my team, have written. “So, what you’ve effectively done is written a unique data structure to connect elements in memory?!”, “no, it’s a linked list, next question please”.

atocci, w Cities: Skylines 2 releasing with mechanics from the original game via DLC

Oh man I read this title backwards and went into that article expecting to be angry. I thought it was saying that features from the first Cities: Skylines would only be available as DLC in 2. Very happy it's the other way around.

Andjhostet,

It's very poorly worded

YuzuDrink,

Thank you for this. I had the same impression, and was starting to get annoyed; but if it comes with more features out the gate, then that’s nice!

Awkwardparticle,

I got my pitchfork out and started to sharpen it.
Cities Skylines is one of my top games, even with loads paid DLC. The modding capability and community make up for it.

thingsiplay, w Microsoft shortens its Xbox Game Pass trials just before Starfield’s release
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@asteroidrainfall I think it's only fair to have a 14 days trial for 1 Euros/Dollars. One month trial period was insane anyway. And just to correct the article or add information; this trial is not only for new subscribers in general, but also if you haven't used it in a months. Then you get the offer again. I did that multiple times (it offers me again for 1 Euro), because most of the time I do not have Game Pass subscription.

Strafer,
@Strafer@artemis.camp avatar

$1 for a 14 day trial seems pretty reasonable especially considering if you time it around when you know you have a fair bit of time you could play through quite a few games in that time.

I had done that a few times where there was a game I was interested in and just got a trial and completed it during the trial period making it a very cheap game rental.

technologicalcaveman, w Nintendo has filed over 30 Tears of the Kingdom patents, registering things you wouldn't even notice in the game

Everytime I hear something new about nintendo I like them less. Which sucks because I know there's no chance of kirby going anywhere else without emulation.

HidingCat, w Baldur’s Gate 3 early impressions: You’ll spend whole weeks in here and love it

Man, I just don't have time for games like these any more. I spent 100 hours in D:OS and I can't say I liked it that much.

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

I had to force myself to not get BG3 before I finish WOTR at least. I love games like these but after a few dozen hours the cognitive load or something becomes too much and I just feel exhausted from them, there's too many things to track for little benefit.

Andyzoot, w Surprise! Red Dead Redemption Blasts Onto Switch Next Week

Full price for a straight port of a 13 year old game? I could probably get a PS3 and a copy of the original game for that.

Ganondorf,
@Ganondorf@kbin.social avatar

That sort of cash grab is to be expected of Rockstar

ombremad,

I got a copy of the Xbox 360 GOTY version on a yard sale for €10. It includes Undead Nightmare and works on my Series X in 4K. I mean… why even bother with this new version

ombremad, w Red Dead Redemption: Comparing the new version for PS4 and Switch with the original

Everyone: waiting for Red Dead Redemption 2’s next-gen update due for years now (and possibly cancelled)
Rockstar: here’s a very poor port of Red Dead Redemption on Switch and PS4

NixDev, w Nintendo has filed over 30 Tears of the Kingdom patents, registering things you wouldn't even notice in the game

Would these parents hold up in court?

Nick,

Assuming that these patents are all granted, courts will generally treat them as though they are valid and enforceable. However, the bar for getting a patent is generally rather difficult, so it could be the case that none of these patent prosecutions are successful at all. If they get these patents, all Nintendo would have to do is file an infringement against allegedly infringing parties, and then the onus is almost entirely on the responding party to prove either that they did not violate the patent, or that the patent was invalid in the first place. Nintendo loses almost nothing in trying to enforce a patent, and has plenty to gain from the chilling effect that prolonged litigation could have.

This article is just awfully written.

loobkoob,

It's the second article from this site I've seen today - both posted by the same account - and they've both been horrific. The Cities: Skylines 2 one had some awful title gore, too.

Part of me wants to just block OP so I don't ever see this website again. But part of me doesn't want to because I want the news still, and I think there can be valuable discussion in the comment sections even if the article itself is awful.

Coolkicks, w Nintendo has filed over 30 Tears of the Kingdom patents, registering things you wouldn't even notice in the game

It takes an anti-consumer boot locker perspective while not listing a single patent. Some shitposts have more actual content than this article.

Eggyhead, w Linux passes Mac for Steam's second-most used OS, possibly due to Steam Deck
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

Even if Apple magically did everything right for gaming on Mac, I wouldn’t be inclined to use the client Steam built for Mac.

massive_bereavement,
@massive_bereavement@kbin.social avatar

I did try gaming in a Mac, and it seems like Apple was trying everything to make it as unpleasant as possible (e.g., the opengl fiasco).

Eggyhead,
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

I’ve been using Mac for decades and have yet to have a particularly pleasant gaming experience with it, although I don’t generally go looking for it anymore. Last I tried, I bought FF XIV “FOR MAC” and it couldn’t run on my MBP, which was the latest model at the time. It would run if I had an older OS running though. And to top it off, I wasn’t even allowed a refund for the mistake, because it was a problem with WINE and not square’s fault. I decided Mac games weren’t worth the frustration at that point.

StarServal, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president
@StarServal@kbin.social avatar

There are only two things certain in life: Death, and game sales not living up to Square-Enix’s expectations.

Athena5898, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

It's Square, they wouldn't of been happy unless it sold as much as Tear of The Kingdom

Nefyedardu,

Final Fantasy in it's heyday outsold Zelda by a lot

Homeschooled316,

The PS1 also sold the N64 3:1, But FF7, the highest selling FF game, only sold about 9m to OoT’s 7m. Relative to console sales, oot thrashed final fantasy 7. Of course, it helps that they cranked these games out way faster than Zelda back then.

The current situation is similar, except the switch is wildly more prevalent than the PS5. There is almost 1 TotK sold for every 6 switch units, which is utterly insane when you consider how many ignored/lost/broken units are probably out there. By contrast, there is about 1 FF16 for every 10 PS5 units out there.

Nefyedardu,

These are the numbers I found for 5th and 6th gen games:
FFVII: 10.0
FFVIII: 8.6
FFX: 8.5
Ocarina of Time: 7.60
Wind Waker: 6.79
Majora's Mask: 6.82

FFIX: 5.5
FFX-2: 5.4
Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages: 3.99
Minish Cap: 1.76

So maybe "a lot" is an overstatement, but they did generally sell more. You have a point regarding sales-per-console, but also remember PS1 had over 1900 games to N64s 388. That's way more competition for third party FF games to get sales. Many people that buy Sony consoles don't even look twice at JRPGs, whereas most people that buy Nintendo consoles know day one they are going to get the latest Mario and Zelda.

Athena5898,

sure, but the series and Square are by far very different than they were in it's heyday. Square has really been racking its players over the coals with shitty tactics lately and has signaled pretty loud and clear that they don't care about games at all and are just trying to get money out of you (I mean all major companies are like that, the others are just better at it and shut up about it) I said Tears of the Kingdom because it's the current high selling game, that's what they wanted this game to be and I honestly don't know why you'd even hope for something like that when handling business the way they do. (as people have mentioned they'd play it but do not have the system.)

Nefyedardu,

No I agree. The fact that Final Fantasy used to outsell Zelda and now sells 1/3rd of it should speak volumes about how Square has handled the franchise. Gaming has only gotten bigger since the late 90s.

Athena5898,

agreed

5redie8,
