Omegamanthethird, w Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity ‘yielded a better product’, Todd Howard says
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

I absolutely believe that exclusivity can create a better product. A company can put more resources into a game if they’re more worried about making a system seller than a profit driver.

But I don’t think for a moment that it benefited the game by creating a focus for the developers by limiting the consoles.

eltimablo,

Back in the day, console exclusivity meant you could take advantage of system-specific features such as the ridiculously powerful SIMD core in the PS3. Now, 2/3 major consoles have nearly identical hardware, and the third is an overclocked smartphone, so there's no real benefit to system lock-in.

Seriously, if they said this about the Switch, nobody would bat an eye. But it seems to be easier to simultaneously develop for PS5 and XBox Series than to develop for both consoles and PC, given how terrible a lot of PC ports are.

Zombiepirate, w Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom

Looks like still nothing on hardware specs.

I imagine they’ll keep the docked/portable form if they’re keeping the Switch name though.

newthrowaway20, w Baldur's Gate 3's companions were overly horny due to a bug

Yeah, me too.

inclementimmigrant, w Baldur's Gate 3's success is not about setting a new "standard"

I mean it should and they didn’t set a new standard, they just brought back a old standard of having a developer and publisher actually giving a fuck about making a good, complete game.

vasametropolis, (edited )

This is the perspective that is totally forgotten and missed by most engaging in the discussion. Not to diminish Larian’s achievement, but they literally busted out the old playbook. Credit where it’s due, but BG3 shouldn’t be controversial - it should be the standard because that’s what the standard used to be.

Sylvartas, (edited )

That’s what the standard used to be, because it used to be much cheaper to satisfy. For indies, if you try to do a quarter of what Larian achieved there in production value, and your game doesn’t sell, your studio is dead. For AAA, you’ll have to fight execs/management endlessly trying to shoehorn microtransactions and/or dlc to “justify” the costs.

I’d love it to be the new standard, but this only happened because Larian is basically a huge indie imo. Which unfortunately is an anomaly.

Crayphish, w EA’s CEO teases ‘very exciting’ projects in development at Respawn

Andrew Wilson and my personal definition of ‘very exciting’ likely differ greatly, so I’m not going to pay attention to anything until we see the products. I suspect he is very excited to make a lot of money on a bunch of new Star Wars games.

That’s copium Mr. Howard, and you know it

Does he? By now his brain may be addled enough for him to believe that. The guy's been Todd Howard for decades now and that's really got to wear on a person's mind.

Considering Microsoft forcing a year QA on them with the full MS QA team… yea I imagine the partnership and exclusivity did indeed yield a much less buggy and thus better product.

tegs_terry, w RuneScape reaches mostly negative reviews on steam after introducing Hero pass

My only issue is that the TH keys aren’t available as rewards anymore. But at least the challenges are a challenge again instead of 2 minutes work.

Just more bellyaching from a pampered fanbase.

anticommon,

Pampered? Maybe.

But Jagex really has gone in deep with the MTX and gambling in RS3. OSRS isn’t perfect but if you look at the games side by side it’s in a different league entirely, with the only ‘MTX’ being the membership and bonds which are just membership that can be used for game time or to sell to other players for coins (those players can then use bonds for game time or name changes etc.).

If OSRS got a battle pass the community would revolt.

tegs_terry,

I’ve never spent a penny on mtx

Artard, w PlayStation Plus Monthly Cost Soars by 600% in Turkey, Sparking Outrage

That’s what they get for reelecting that clown tanking their currency.

I’m really hoping they scrapped that read at 55 seconds. 😬

CluckN,

“YoU OutLahnders think yourself Sooo Souperior”

Anonymousllama, w Baldur's Gate 3's success is not about setting a new "standard"

“not always possible for other developers”, mostly because they’re busy shitting out rubbish, buggy titles riddled with micro transactions (or whatever nonsense they can get away with to nickel and dime their customers)

People took note of how great BG3 is because it’s just a good game, you’re not be treated as a resource they can squeeze to get extra cash

regulatorg, w EA’s CEO teases ‘very exciting’ projects in development at Respawn

Respawn good, EA bad

Blizzard, w Phil Spencer: Starfield exceeded 1 million concurrent players across all platforms today. Thanks to all the players who helped us reach this great milestone and congrats to the Bethesda Studios

Across all 2 platforms?

lustyargonian,

I think MSFT Store on PC, Xbox Store, Steam, xCloud and GamePass.

Blizzard, w Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity ‘yielded a better product’, Todd Howard says

So how come it runs in 30 FPS?

BruceTwarzen,

Makes you wonder what the bad product would look like

lustyargonian,

We already know; Skyrim and Fallout 4. They still drop frames on current gen consoles!

Pratai, w Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity ‘yielded a better product’, Todd Howard says

No, it didn’t.
