Can somebody explain why game makers don't start their own companies together? angielski

It seems like every other week a game studio is massively laying off employees; sometimes after years of development. What I’m reading is that it’s a quick way to lower expenses and pad the investors’ pockets, flooding the market with developers and reducing their value, to then hire them back a few months later at lower...

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

They do, though. Like, all the time. Many Indy companies start this way, and a lot of AA to even AAA studios started after high profile people were let go or otherwise left a bigger company to start their own.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The first time playing when he starts telling me to turn the game off cuz I’ve been playing a long time, I had literally been playing one long-ass session up to that point without ever turning the game off. Freaked me out. Psycho Mantis in mgs1 could tell you exactly how long you played, and I thought this was a legit Easter egg for playing a single 12+ hour session. lol

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Worse they can say is yes, then take you home to carve up and eat because they’re a serial killer cannibal.

Earthbound has my favorite trash mob of all time.

The New Age Retro Hippy.

Kolanaki,

I still have my slim PS2 and Magic Swap discs. It had the best library of that era IMO.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Hardware power wise it was the least capable machine. Library wise, it dominated.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

This one made me wonder if they don’t get telemetrics about how people are playing the game to improve the game (or build a new game) from without doing this. And if that same data would be valuable to data brokers in general or if it’s more valuable as an internal trade secret.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Yes, it would be just for Sony to get it; not meaning to say it isn’t collected at all by the developer. Before this, I would have thought they’d share that with the publisher (this case Sony) anyway.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Baldur’s Gate 3. That’s a beholder.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Dpad for precise timing (like movement). Analogue for precise looking (like aiming).

If I could use the dpad to move in a souls game (especially the ones with movement based combos) I would. But I’d still want the analogue stick for the camera.

How else is my 3yo nephew supposed to win? He’s not ready to play as King!

A change like this may warrant special exceptions to the refund rules. Steam has made exceptions for similar changes to games made after launch in the past.

Interactive Loading Screens - High Hell angielski

Developing interactivity is effort and an investment. Most developers put up a simple loading screen, maybe some text like rotating tips, and a loading indicator. Until 2015 a patent on interactive loading screens may have made developers and publishers cautious and decide against developing interactivity....

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The Sims 3 had interactive loading screens prior to 2015 when one of the first DLCs introduced them. They’re just “find the object” puzzles that earn you in-game points for the family you’re loading. They’re the only non-Namco game interactive loading screens I can think of that were around before the patent expired.

The first one I saw was by the patent holder, Namco, where you could play Galaga while Ridge Racer loaded. I always wanted to see it used more and was stoked when I read the news about the patent expiring.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

HL3 is cool but it will never be better than Polybius, IMO.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I actually was recording when I made the most gnarly mun landing ever in KSP. I ran out of fuel, was going too fast to not explode. I moved Valetina to hang on the outside of the craft, and moments before impact, I had her jump off. The resulting explosion from the module was juuuust enough counter force to prevent Valentina herself from hitting the ground too hard and she lived to plant a flag. To date, it’s the most impressive thing I’ve personally managed in the game.

youtu.be/v2CdIZXO0tQ?si=NKeFV52Q5Edqugw5 (skip to about 22:30 for the “landing”)

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

That’s the plan. We’re still working out how. How long can Kerbals live without food and water? 🤔

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Nowadays

Lol they’ve always sucked.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s meant for children so, yeah, as an adult it fucking sucks to hold. But that is still the case when it’s docked and you’re using the joycons. The joycons are just incredibly small. They also suck in terms of construction and get drifting sticks super fast.

A personal argument for a benefit of gaming

I grew up hearing all the talking heads (media), religious groups and parents strongly criticizing video games. You’ve, probably, heard some of this. For example, video games involving any type of violence causing people to become more violent, etc. As far as I know, the academic community has failed to produce any negative...

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Getting angry isn’t the problem. It’s how you deal with it. Smashing your game system and or TV ain’t the best way to go about it.

Escape From Tarkov studio boss says he "did not foresee" players would get mad about charging extra for PvE (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

This has to be the funniest PR disaster in video game history. “Guy did not forsee players getting mad for locking a gamemode behind a $250 edition, doubles down on it and tells people to chill out”

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

If you didn’t forsee people getting pissed at a content add that costs $250 and not counted as DLC so those with the lifetime DLC pass don’t get it without paying more, you are a monumental moron and probably shouldn’t be in charge of running a business where you have employees who can lose their livelihood because of your poor leadership and incredible lack of foresight.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

CP2077 never promised the DLC would be free. And they also added tons of content prior to the DLC that was free. 🤨

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

So many SFM videos that use Link and Mario models straight up ripped from their games will no longer be made. :(

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Almost as annoying is DS1, 3 and Elden Ring booting you to the main menu just cuz you got disconnected. But at least they can still be played, it’s just annoying to be pulled out of the game for that when it’s mostly just for bloodstains, messages and being invaded.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Microsoft is the biggest threat to Xbox.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

ARPG = Action Role Playing Game.

The themes, camera angle, and method of delivering rewards (loot) don’t really affect something being an action RPG or not. The focus on action over storytelling does.

The Elder Scrolls is also an ARPG.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

So they wanna discontinue dealing in VR, just like Microsoft did? 🤔

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The index isn’t standalone 🤦‍♂️

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I own a lot of VR games and the only one that doesn’t have a port that works natively on the Quest is Half-Life Alyx. Standalones can also be plugged in or stream PCVR wirelessly, and all of the standalone HMDs I am aware of, have better hardware than the aging Index (and thus look better even when not doing PCVR). Even the trackers are better and smaller and don’t require a home base station.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The Index still has a higher resolution than the Quest 2 and earlier standalone VR headsets

Uh… The Index has a resolution of 1440x1600 per eye with 15PPD. The Quest 2 is 1832x1920 per eye with 20PPD. The Quest 1 had the exact same resolution as the Index. The Quest 3 is 2064x2208 per eye and Pico 4 is 2160x4320 per eye. The Index doesn’t lead the FOV game anymore, either; but the beasts with 200+ FOV are also super expensive and better in every other way too like the Pimax Vision.

I like Valve, too, but they’re not the best at everything.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

This is literally the first major update since Mistlands was on the docket at the time it blew up. To call the updates merely infrequent is an understatement. They were going fairly strong until they made an unexpected butt load of money and they themselves said they didn’t know how to handle the success.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I have always thought the Dreamcast could have survived once I learned the history of its downfall in detail. SEGA simply had no confidence in it and killed it hella quick and it was just a monumentally stupid idea. It was, and still is, a great machine with a fantastic library that could have been even bigger if they didn’t just kill it on arrival.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’d just start at the beginning with the Collection. Pretty sure the stories connect but even if they don’t, seeing the mechanics evolve backwards or out of order can be annoying. Like you start with 4 and then when you play 2 or something and a mechanic isn’t there that was nice, it kinda kills the experience. Starting from the earliest point and working up makes it feel way better as they begin to nail down and improve things.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

You’re gonna “the WHAT” on one of the most normal monsters in the game? Your head is gonna literally explode when you encounter one of the entirely RNG creatures. lol

My favorite I’ve personally ran into while playing was a demon made of smoke. Basically the fog monster from Lost. Except that it wasn’t as terrifying as it sounded from its description because smoke is, you know, super easy to cut. He died basically by being wafted away by an infant.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

There’s fun stuff you can do with that vampire if you ever figure out who it is. They make great slaves because they live forever and don’t need to eat.

Figuring out who it is can be hard tho. You really have to watch the logs or build in ways that they can’t feed without being witnessed.

And if you do want them alive, make sure your hammerer just has something weak because if you have the justice system set up, they usually will sentence a vamp to death. Adamantine makes a great non-lethal hammer. It’s so light, blunt weapons become foam bats.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

You may not actually have the accused in custody to interrogate.

My understanding of the justice system may also be out of date. I have not put nearly as much time into the Steam version as I have the legacy versions preceding it.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

As a fan of Adventure mode in the legacy version of the game for years, I am excited for the new changes and mechanics that have been in the Steam version since release but in Adventure mode.

Is it a public beta or something I can just click on in the beta tab?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I just want games made by people who are trying to make a good game, and not games made by people or companies that are only trying to make money. Not one GaaS game is actually special enough to warrant spending more than the base price of the game on (and many aren’t even worth that when their next best competitor is fuckin’ free to play.)

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PC cross-play and system requirements revealed (blog.playstation.com) angielski

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the first PlayStation title on PC that uses a new PlayStation overlay, which includes your Friends list, Trophies, Settings, and your Profile. This feature is available on Windows PCs and will be accessible from the in-game menu or, for keyboard players, by pressing the “SHIFT +F1”...

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

What in the hell equivalent on modern system requirements would a 1660 Super be? The thing is still getting me good performance in most things, even new things, but the requirement lists have all moved on to RTX models for nVidia’s side of things. I can guess from this I might still get 60fps at 1080p on Medium settings; but maybe not if that all depends on DLSS being employed which my card doesn’t have.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It sounds like you can access your actual PS network friends and earn PS trophies. I hope that is in addition to achievements on Steam itself and not a replacement. I would imagine many people getting the PC version don’t have a PlayStation in the first place.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Me: “I wonder if I can find this dude’s kid in game and reunite them… 🤔”

Kolanaki,

If my game preference determines how I want the world to be: I must want the world to be a fucked up, cursed wasteland where everything is in a state of constant suffering, and the best outcome is killing everyone so they at least stop suffering.

I’ll let y’all figure out what kind of games I play.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

outside

Thinking about it, real life isn’t much different than Dark Souls. But I would like the IRL monsters to look better than just a poorly re-skinned default character.
