funnystuff97, (edited ) w Factorio Friday Facts #377 - New new rails

I haven’t even read the article yet and I’m at full sail.

Edit after reading:

The new rails look gorgeous, and I need those new S-bends immediately. And those smooth curves!

And this:

We have increased the big electric pole range to 32 to go along with this.

is how you know a game dev is in touch with their audience.

Although this confirms my suspicions from last week that 1.1.x maps will be incompatible with the 2.x update, which is a shame but completely understandable. That just means that I have to hurry up and launch my first rocket before that happens! (I swear I’m making actual progress and not just staring blankly at my machines at work)

It says that you can still use the old rails but you won’t be able to build them the same way. You can just rebuild the trails you really need or want the other way

funnystuff97,

As you can probably guess, the new rail curves will be incompatible with the old ones. Savegames from 1.1 can be opened and trains will still run on previously built rails just like normal, but you won’t be able to construct the old rails at all anymore. In some future Factorio update when we decide to drop 1.1 savegame compatibility (Let’s say 2.1), we will eventually get rid of the old rail shapes completely.

Ah, I misinterpreted that, it seems you’re right. Still, it looks like there will come a point where 1.1.x maps will no longer be supported, which is again understandable.

Shiggles,

It sounds more like you’d have to load the savegame in 2.0, then load it from 2.1. Theoretically they aren’t changing Nauvis all that much, so I can’t see why it would be unsupported just yet.

I’m sure it will come with a way to update the map like opening with the second to last update to reformat it. It would be a shame for some megabases I’ve seen to just stop being able to play them

And not a game where I play as Smeagol?

ApathyTree, w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It depends on the game.

Typically I prefer normal, but there are some games where inverted camera just makes it easier, like games with full 3D exploration (flying/swimming). I do sometimes only invert the vertical for these, so I’m that maniac.

If you are an older gamer, you’re probably right that you picked it up in the early camera control games (ps1/2 for me), because changing camera function wasn’t an option and a -lot- of games inverted by default back then. I believe the logic was to treat your view camera like a real video camera, where you push the back to the left to point the camera lens to the right, but most people don’t have that type of experience so it’s less intuitive, which is why it’s less common now. I blame mostly Spyro flying challenges for my limited inversion use.

And like you, I struggle with games that don’t allow me to pick, which is most of the older games, even remastered 😭 it’s so hard to re-learn.

One big thing I love about my Steam Deck is the ridiculous amount of control customization available with Steam input.

Worst case, if there’s no option to invert in the game, you can change it in Steam with one click and it’ll remember your settings for each game.

dan1101, w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

Inverted Y, I played a lot of flight sims like Wing Commander and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe in my youth. I can’t play with normal Y, it constantly messes me up.

Shut up, as they say, and take my money.

Tathas, w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

With a controller I need invertY or I can’t do anything right.

No invert with a mouse though, unless I’m playing a flying game.

  • Tathas,

One of the earliest 3D games I remember playing was Falcon 3.0, haha.

atlasraven31, w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

I prefer inverted too. It feels more natural to me. Just like a bike, I can’t do the opposite with much success.

Elderos, (edited ) w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

Normal feels like I am controlling the vision frustum (where I want to look at), and inverted feels like I am moving the camera itself, as if it was a physical object. I can play both but I definitely have to remind myself what I am trying to control when making the switch.

I vastly prefer non-inverted, because I like the idea of just pointing where I want to look at. I hope it makes sense. All of this apply mostly for games with orbit camera.

I prefer uninverted purely because that is what I grew up with. On the og xbox there weren’t many options to change controls, so you had to put up with what the game gave you. I can play with inverted controls, but it feels like writing with my left hand.

CancerMancer, w Embracer says its ‘crazy’ outlay on platform fees exceeds its spend on game development

Epic Game Store is focused so hard on making it good for devs but they have also intentionally neutered it for gamers. Does it even run on Linux yet? We all know that’s the direction Valve is taking things and it’s why Microsoft is starting to panic.

    amzd,

It kinda does? You have to use a third party app like lutris/heroic.

You could argue that steam doesn't fully work on linux either (multiple windows like chat, friendslist or library opened on the same workspace regularly crash on Wayland and I havent had the steam overlay working on any non linux native game) but these features arent even part of the epic launcher

    sugar_in_your_tea,

Huh, I’ve never used chat, I rarely use the friends list, and I think I’ve intentionally used the overlay maybe a handful of times. So I don’t think that’s a big loss.

However, they did work fine on xorg (I haven’t used any of them since switching a few months ago).

Regardless, the launcher works for the primary use cases: buying, organizing, installing, and playing games. So I think that qualifies as supporting Linux, even if there are some bugs here and there.

    HackerJoe,

Not from Epic, no. But there is Legendary github.com/derrod/legendary

It’s (relatively, don’t use the embedded browser) pure Python and runs anywhere. I also use it on my Win7 retro machine because the Epic Launcher sucks. It also supports epic DRM and can log the game in.

Round about way to say they spend less than 30% on development. Gotta pay big money to the team inventing the latest mtx addiction bs.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

So 30-40% profit? That sounds like a lot.
