qyron, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Not that I’ll be buying it anytime soon but if the hardware specifications I’ve read are true, no graphics card is worth €500+ to play a game. This is bonkers.

deadcream, w Starfield gets low-spec PC mod for those gaming on potatoes

Potatoes? You mean PCs with < $1000 GPUs?
I'm not touching Starfield until I can play it at 1440p 60 fps with decent graphics (yes, actual 1440p, not "720p upscaled to 1440p" bullshit. Neither that nor 30 fps are acceptable to me).

If Bethesda can't be bothered to fix performance and I will need to wait years until I decide to upgrade so be it - I have plenty of great games in my "to play" list. By that time the will also be lots of mods to choose from to make Starfield worth it.

BruceTwarzen,

It's crazy to me that they make the same game for almost 20 years but still can't make it work. The ai seems to get worse every game, computers get better and better but it still runs the same.

salton,

Just from a a couple of nights playing Starfield. The combat ai does seem more interesting then with enemies jumping off ledges to get to you etc but not but a whole heck of a lot. L

Hyperreality,

Wait a year for the modding community to finish it.

When I first played Fallout 4 years ago, it ran at 20fps in some parts of the map and on medium.

Playing it again now, modded to the max, ultra, higher res textures, 60fps everywhere.

Same pc.

deadcream,

That's the plan. I haven't actually properly played F4 yet either lol (tried years ago but dropped due to performance issues). Probably will do it soon after spending a month modding it.

Hyperreality,

Did that on skyrim.

Don't know how much free time you have, but I couldn't be bothered anymore for FO4 on nexus. I just downloaded one of the bigger/better collections and ignored/deactivated the creepier/boobier mods.

Already more than enough of a hassle to get that working, with vortex sometimes not installing stuff properly, pre-cleaning files, etc.

deadcream,

I just enjoy that stuff lol. I only stopped my last Skyrim playthrough because I kept updating my mods and adding new ones and at the one point it just broke all of my saves. I took it as a sign to move on to other games.

Hyperreality,

Same, but realistically once you start heading towards the 500 mods range, it's almost impossible to get it working reliably.

At one point I had 200+ mods on skyrim, and the mod cycles and before/after conflicts on vortex looked like mandelas. I did enjoy 'completing' the vortex mod manager game. That's when it's 3AM, you're fed up, you give up trying to figure what's wrong, and just click randomly and uninstall/reinstall mods until vortex shuts up, and it somehow just works. Bit like winning the lottery.

I’ve never played a Bethesda game at launch.

Or any game for that matter.

circuitfarmer, w Starfield gets low-spec PC mod for those gaming on potatoes
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Sad that the article focused on this particular mod. It’s aimed at textures for low-end systems, yes, but there are 2-3 others that are aimed at systems across the board and use stock textures with simple config file changes. They’re all tweaks with options that are in the game but unavailable on the menu, and they do vastly improve performance without a drop in quality.

A better headline could have been “Modders fix in days what Bethesda didn’t do with years”.

EarthlingHazard, w Starfield Steam Deck performance report: a frontier too far

I don’t think anyone is surprised to hear that it does not run well on the deck. Personally I’ll be streaming the game with game pass if I want to play on steam deck

FrankTheHealer,

What do you use to stream game pass games on Steam Deck?

I have a ton of older games in my Xbox library that I’d love to play on Steam Deck

EarthlingHazard,

Microsoft has a guide for it actually and it works pretty well:

I feel like this was a missed opportunity. If they had done this on release, they’d likely have sold much better.

sp6, w Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 is effectively the PC version at ultra settings

More info from the article: quality mode is 1440p 30fps, and performance mode is 960p (upscaled to 1440p using FSR2) 60fps. Although late-game, specifically the big cities in act 3, can dip into mid-20fps range

Hot ones is a show where you meet a person you likely never heard of and end up liking them and learning a lot on about 10 minutes.

Great show.

melonpunk, w E3 2024 in doubt, as organiser exits and location abandoned
@melonpunk@lemmy.world avatar

It’s already dead, please leave the corpse alone.

It is kinda sad given the legacy of the show, it almost made it to 30 and was the place of so many big industry moments (good and bad). Things have become more spread out now across GamesCom, PAXs, TGS, GDC, Develop and the many I’m forgetting.

I can get the argument that we really don’t need much of an in-person event given that stuff can be streamed instantly around the world now, we don’t need to rely on people setting up cameras in front of TVs to show off noisy gameplay footage, but the fact that so many others shows still exist proves that there is a want for in-person events.

E3’s death kinda came about because it got chipped away from all sides. There were better places for industry deal making to be done (GDC), Big publishers peeled off to do their own thing, and the expensive mark up that hit the other companies no longer appealed as they could get what they needed from PAX and GamesCom.

PhaseLocked, w E3 2024 in doubt, as organiser exits and location abandoned

With most big publishers doing direct events regularly, and smaller devs getting better reach at things like PAX, who needs E3 any more?

Omegamanthethird, w Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity ‘yielded a better product’, Todd Howard says
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

I absolutely believe that exclusivity can create a better product. A company can put more resources into a game if they’re more worried about making a system seller than a profit driver.

But I don’t think for a moment that it benefited the game by creating a focus for the developers by limiting the consoles.

eltimablo,

Back in the day, console exclusivity meant you could take advantage of system-specific features such as the ridiculously powerful SIMD core in the PS3. Now, 2/3 major consoles have nearly identical hardware, and the third is an overclocked smartphone, so there's no real benefit to system lock-in.

Omegamanthethird,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

Seriously, if they said this about the Switch, nobody would bat an eye. But it seems to be easier to simultaneously develop for PS5 and XBox Series than to develop for both consoles and PC, given how terrible a lot of PC ports are.

JJROKCZ, w RuneScape reaches mostly negative reviews on steam after introducing Hero pass

This is for rs3 right? No one plays that shit anyway, 2007scape is where it’s at

cryball,

Yes. OSRS reviews on steam are still listed as very positive.

mojo,

Idk why you’d ever play it on RuneScape, it’s like nearly unplayable without Runelite.

keeeener,

I wouldn’t say unplayable, maybe less convenient? I get what you mean though

example: why play CG on hdos or the steam client when I can use runelite and have c engineer tell me “2…1… mage/range” every few seconds for easier cycles lol

Nythos,

I’ve only ever watched people like Settled play the game but is tile marking even a thing in the base client?

Because I feel without that it’s a whole lot more than just less convenient

mojo,

Nope, and I mean it’s actually unplayable without Runelite. They other guy is missing out a lot of details, even simple stuff like increasing the render distance and using GPU rendering.

thoughtorgan,

You’re exaggerating. That’s the point he was making.

The official client is totally playable. Lots of people use it. RuneLite is just a lot more modern and expanded.

mojo,

I’ve actually never met a single person who uses the official client, it has so many things that are just required to play. Sure you can click and move like normal, but you’re missing a massive amount of essential information and QoL features.

JJROKCZ,

Remember kids, casuals, and people on mobile, plenty of the player base doesn’t use runelite but also doesn’t base their personality around a game from 2002 and talk about it all the time so you’d never know. I’ve played for nearly 20 years but almost never talk about it online and absolutely not in person. I’ve used runelite for a lot of that time but in the 00s I was on the browser with everyone else and played a fuckload perfectly fine

mojo,

Uh yeah and the game today is very different then it was in the 00s. As much as I wish I was a 10 year old mindlessly killing goblins all day for next to no experience, people optimize their exp/hr nowadays, and that requires Runelite. Mobile is good for when you want to do woodcutting while on the toilet though.

JJROKCZ,

YOU min/max your xp/hr, not everyone. Some of us just enjoy fishing on karamja and chatting or chopping some trees and talking shit in draynor or making deals at the GE. So many people that have gone into min/max mode assume that everyone does the same barrows run with them 40 times a day when that isn’t the case, the majority of us don’t care about 2/3 tick this or that or best t-bow drop rates, we just enjoy the game whatever way we want to enjoy it

mojo,

I definitely don’t think you speak for the majority here.

glimse, w Baldur's Gate 3 - Hotfix #5 Now Live

I like how the entire first part is about romancing a “secret” character and then it warms that the list below contains spoilers lol

The patch notes I’d really like to see are:

  1. The illithid power, Fly, now properly replaces the jump hotkey when specced into it.

PLEASE stop assuming I want to run across the map then jump. The workaround (put it on the custom bar) sucks if you have pets who can also fly as Z no longer works for it

  1. The custom action bar no longer rearranged itself when changing heights

Why is this even a thing? Cleric has so many damn spells, I want to use 3 rows! But if I do that, the icons scatter and the buttons with hotkeys get spaced out weird.

  1. Identical items now stack automatically when is looted, moved to bags, or sent between characters. If a character has an item in a bag, the item is automatically added to the bag

I pick up an arrow and it goes to my inventory. I drag it to my arrow bag and now I have 2 stacks of the same arrow. It’s easy to fix but I don’t think we should have to spend the time organizing that much.

  1. Players can now use dye on their bags and pouches

Right now the only way to differentiate is by container type. Is the pouch my bomb bag or is it the backpack? I always forget so I have to open one and see

  1. Several items have been updated and tagged appropriately so “Sort by type” actually sorts by type

The answer to “why can’t I drag all this stuff into an alchemy bag?” is usually “because there’s a camp supply in the selection”

PenguinTD,

I think if you post this to the steam community or larian’s community forum they can see it better than here on lemmy.

glimse,

This is my first Larian game (loving it so far), how are they with community feedback? My gripes are so minor and I haven’t seen many people feel the same way

PenguinTD,

your complains are itemized and exactly to the point. So that’s something developers would like to have. The difficulty to fix however is unknown, some seemingly simple fix would be very hard because of how the interaction is implemented. (ie, like sending stuff to another character or camp does not auto arrange/stacking similar item, it’s much easier to implement use the almost unlimited space slots, then when you actually sort, then they do the auto stacking for you when you manage a space.) people sometimes does not like auto sort result and prefer doing their own inventory, so they keep where the item is until you sort or moving. (more obvious after you did a trade and then to reorganize char’s inv)

glimse,

Fair points about the inventory spaces. The sorting is absolutely busted though as it doesn’t do what it says (sorting by TYPE)

PenguinTD,

I know, I wish we can config the priority of the type, so the more “useless” type are sorted to the bottom of stack, or even assign colored background for different type of things. As a hoarder that even collect rotten food early game it is annoying. (I did keep rotton stuff in a separate container and just sell the whole thing to merchant. )

glimse,

Yeah I’m with you, I’d say the inventory system is the only bad thing about the game.
