Wait, this is going to be a Funcom game?? Oh man, Funcom has made some of our favourite games! We adored Anarchy Online, and The Secret World is still one of the mmo’s I would recommend to anyone who wants to try a really unique modern mmo with an amazing story.
Unfortunately when they were developing TSW and Age of Conan, someone made the call to go all in on AOC which was just… not unique in a space saturated with that kind of WoW clone.
TSW ended up not having the cashflow (devs) it needed to release updates and expansions and it fell into disfavour once the player base reached end game. Which is really sad, because even as a “dead” game the story and gameplay are so good.
I really hope they have retained the devs that worked on TSW and have enough cash to push everything into this game. Make it unique like TSW and AO were, push a couple expansions, and there will be players.
I only got to play a bit of The Secret World (or was it Legends or something?) and it was really fun! I was sad I had found it at the end of life. My memory is bad, so my only real memory was er…I was helping around some Haunted Indian Reservation, and the daughter of the owner was rightfully complaining about people coming in and white knighting (and being male) and we panned over to my character…chinese ass woman standing there. And it acknowledge that! She was like “Guess not all the time though” and it was like!!! Excellent!!!
I am pretty disconnected from this videogame series, is Oblivion now the best looking game from Bethesda? (It should be as it is the most recent game I suppose) Would you recommend it over Skyrim graphical and gaming/story wise? Would a new Skyrim remastered game with these assets would be near the horizon? lol.
I’d argue that Skyrim represents a significant downgrade from earlier titles. The simplified mechanics and increased advertising budget made it more accessible, but the writing quality has been in free fall since morrowind.
That being said, this is probably their prettiest title now. I haven’t gotten to try it yet, but supposedly it is a ground up remake, and if it’s on a better engine it may be their least janky game too.
As much as I like Skyrim, I don’t think there’s a general consensus that the earlier games were better written.
Personally, until I played Phantom Liberty, the Shivering Isles was the best expansion I had ever played for any game. I’ll leave it to you to discover, if you get the game, but allow me to say it is delightful and different and a ton of fun.
I bet the OG Oblivion scene gets a new spark because of this. It’s still going strong as it is.
I’ve been playing Morrowind, and it’s still a great game. Script Extender or OpenMw, choose your modern flavor. The quests and flow of the game is excellent.
My only thing is that Oblivion does not play well on newer hardware. It was a bit of an ordeal to try to get it running well on my PC where I have two monitors, since it only runs on whichever monitor is primary and only if in Fullscreen mode. And don’t even think about alt-tabbing to check Discord, or it just crashes.
If it got the OpenMW treatment, I’d be thrilled with even that.
I accepted the fact that I’m not someone who replays games other than a few selected nostalgic titles so I bought it and can’t wait for this to fully release (and finally the promised SteamDeck support).
Yeah, I’ve been really impressed with Gloomwood but I am already tired of the fishery (level 1) and wish the EA would come with a jump-ahead feature. It’s looking to be a very good game on release, I’m quite excited for it.
