It’s going to have crossplay, so for me it’s already GOTY material.

Stovetop, do games w LEGO VOYAGERS | Reveal Trailer

This might be my favorite trailer of the event, to be honest.

I’ve played too many gritty action games at this point, just give me cute and creative stuff and I’m happy.

mohab, do games w Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver - Official Teaser Trailer

God damn, I wish it was a fighter, but I'll take an ARPG. Will give it a shot when it comes out 👐

nyctre,

We’ve only seen 2 seconds of gameplay, how can you be sure it’s not a rogue like or something? Did I miss it being stated somewhere or you’re just guessing?

Also, this comment reminded me how ridiculous I find it that we have genres such as “metroidvania” and “souls like”, “auto shooter” , “survivors like” and etc. Yet we can’t come up with subgenre names other than arpg which can describe everything from Bastion, to Horizon Zero down, to path of exile. What’s up with that?

qarbone,

I’ve never seen Horizon Zero Dawn called an ARPG but that does seem to be the consensus. I’ve always considered games like that or new God of War to be “adventure games”.

nyctre,

We need more subgenres! What do you call breath of the wild or the spiderman games in that case?

Imo god of war/ horizon are aptly named because they’re action focused RPGs.

We need new, better name for the “diablo-like” games, however. I feel like those are different enough that there’s not enough “rpg” left in them beyond the character building elements. Survivorslike aren’t RPGs despite them having character leveling and stuff so why should diablo 4 /Poe be called rpgs?

Charlie conspiracy.jpg

qarbone,

Video game genres are one of the few fields in which I’m not a prescriptivist. But survivorlikes only aren’t called RPGs because Vampire Survivor is embossed on the whole subgenre. The suite of mechanics rose to high prominence on the back of one game (or franchise, in the case of Soulslikes) rather than refined through years of experimentation.

We aren’t going to get more, simple names unless they’re similarly derived from a single, famous ancestor like your “Soulslike”. But you can always just be descriptive. Diablo/PoE are “top-down gear-grind RPGs”; it’s jargony but all subgenres are.

nyctre,

Survivorslike is just one option, auto shooter is the same thing and doesn’t use vampire survivors’ name.

And well, in this case, I just saw op say that this game was gonna be an arpg and because I play a lot of PoE, last epoch, etc. I was expecting something in that vein. Then I open the link and I see 2 seconds of something that looks more like hades or god of war and I was disappointed. So if me wishing we had better terms for various genres makes me a prescriptivist, I guess I am one, in this case.

Also tdggrpg is too complicated of a subgenre name, I feel xD

qarbone,

Yeah, it’s not trendy but I don’t think we can do trendy unless we do like I said and derive from standout games with identifiable suites of mechanics. You just have to be descriptive or accept heavy overlap.

“Auto shooter” is not very descriptive. In 10 years, someone would be having this same conversation about that term. Asteroids is basically an auto shooter because there’s no reason to not always be shooting, it’s effectively a QOL change. Some bullet hells too.

mohab,

There already is a Steam page and the description says co-op action RPG.

I mean, perspective matters, I suppose: you could use isometric/top down and 3rd person to make a distinction between PoE and HZD, but then again I don't play either, or ARPGs in general, so that's as nuanced of a take as I could have on this.

nyctre,

Nah, that wouldn’t be enough to differentiate PoE to hzd, imo. It’s like comparing Max Payne to CSGO. Or I dunno… rocket league to Football manager… or Mario party to street figther… trying to cover as many bases here to cover the games that you might be more familiar with. xD. Point is, in both games you get a character which you level up and customize by doing quests and killing mobs, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end, as far as the gameplay, mechanics and goals of fans go.

And for the record, despite this also being called an arpg, it’ll be very different from both PoE and hzd. ARPG seems to be as vague as “driving game” or “shooter”.

Well, I'll be damned… this is looking more and more like a proper action game. Ima give it a shot on release.

Aielman15, do games w Resident Evil Requiem - Reveal Trailer
@Aielman15@lemmy.world avatar

Tentatively curious.

What was shown of the hotel reminds me of REVII. I’m not sure how it ties to Raccoon, aside from the fact that the protagonist is the daughter of a character from Outbreak, but Raccoon City post-nuke is an interesting setting to explore — and regular zombies seem to be a returning enemy? I’m not sure if they are planning to have flashback sequences during the outbreak, or if the zombies will make an appearance in the present day timeline).

Happy to see a new MC. Ethan was okay-ish but painfully bland, I hope she’ll be more interesting.

I’m down. Recent RE games have been a very fun time.

The more time passes the more 5 and 6 begin to seem like temporary missteps.

MegaUltraChicken,

The more time passes the more 5 and 6 begin to seem like temporary missteps.

I just wanna say me and a buddy played through 5 in co-op and had a great time. Chris Redfield can explode a fucking boulder with his fists and it’s great.

MentalEdge,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Oh we did the same.

5 and 6 are a BLAST with a buddy. Throughout 5, we kept randomly asking each other, “oh hey, this is a horror game, right” as the latest ridiculous action bullshit was happening on-screen, and laughing our asses off.

In 6 in particular, in Ada’s campaign, she is alone… But since everything had to support co-op, for her missions a character called “agent” shows up. He’s just a faceless soldier for player 2 to play as, and every time he disappeared for the duration of a cutscene, and re-appeared for gamplay, it absolutely destroyed us.

Stuff like Ada clearly going through a door, alone, but then him somehow showing up on the other side the second the animation is over, happens CONSTANTLY.

We had this whole head-canon about how he’s an Ada simp that’s always there, just out of frame, and invisible to all the characters. A mysterius man even more unexplained than Ada.

They’re absolutely atrocious RE games, but some of the best fun you can have with a friend.

greenskye,

I absolutely love when games do that. Just a random, faceless dude for the second player that isn’t acknowledged at all by the plot. My favorite coop games growing up were all like that.

MentalEdge,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s especially funny in RE6, because it contrasts with how all the other campaigns had playable, in-universe, part-of-the-story characters for player 2 to control. To the point that playing single player they’re still there as dumb NPCs.

And then when Ada is supposed to be solo, everything feels funnier with the bolted-on co-op.

Justdaveisfine,

Agent is a huge meme for my friend group for pretty much the exact same reasons Lol.

MentalEdge,

I beat 5 on one player. Wish I known it was a co op game. It sucked as ome player the Ai in the woman she take all the ammo and health potions. And no you couldn’t take them back.

caseofthematts,

The reference to that in the RE7 DLC was hilarious.

neon_nova,

I’d add 4 into that list. I really hated that game. I never played 5 though. Maybe I should give it a go.

JustARaccoon, do games w CODE VEIN II — Announcement Trailer

This looks… Rough. The character designs seem to be a major downgrade from before, and the lore and plot don’t seem to follow up at all on the last game?

DoucheBagMcSwag,

I agree with this. It looked like some Fortnite shit.

They probably wanted to do a middle ground to make more visually accessible territory and not branded instantly as a “weeb game” this time. The anime art style is what made it unique though.

JustARaccoon,

It just looks like Pokémon trainer models, but worse in terms of proportions.
