The previous game is one of the most insanely frustrating experiences in gaming I have ever had. So much potential, such poor execution. I do have high hopes for this one, however.
Care to expand on “poor execution”? I really enjoyed it. There were a few times it could be a bit frustrating, but overall I felt it was very well done
Maybe im just unaccustomed to games similar to it but almost every single task, from hunting to fighting or just collecting clue/items felt like a constant chore. I remember just getting my ass pounded into the ground at every encounter. I couldnt even travel without getting ambushed and just dying instantly. Every story mission with combat was a monumental task to overcome and if you died you went back sometimes several hours. And dont get me started on the part where the game wanted me to commit several hours to roleplay being a monk.
ps I know im complaining (it’s my favorite thing to do) but I really did have a super good time with KCD, it was just also a frustrating time and im hoping the next one is at least as in-depth, if not a bit more approachable
I guess you were expecting a very different game. I would challenge calling that “poor execution” though. I personally found the difficulty, the danger of combat, and the atmosphere to be the game’s biggest strengths. I was looking for a game that properly made you feel like a medieval peasant.
Too many medieval RPGs are about fulfilling a power fantasy as some kind of badass, but I really liked that KC:D was more about the vibes of just being a relative nobody in a historically accurate medieval simulation.
I remember vividly the moment I failed a quest because I made the npc wait for too long and thinking “this game is one of a kind”. It does take a while to get used to, but it certainly has its charm.
Or getting a “quest failed” because you told an NPC “we’ll meet up later” instead of “we’ll travel there together”, and see his unarmed ass getting pounded into the ground by a group of bandits camping along the road. 😂
That’s the whole point of the first game, you’re a scrub. Literally a peasant and that fighting isn’t like in Zelda where you’re a complete badass, nope just a scrub ass peasant who happens to have a sword. That’s why I think this game had such a divide. You either loved it or hated it.
Yea I will say I do wish they had more of an arcade thing for people who hated the controls, just so they could experience the story as it was so damn good.
I had the same issue at first, but once I learned that the game actually expects you to spend some time in the training ring with Bernard to both level up Henry’s fighting and build your own skills, it got a lot better. The game will let you do one round of training and move on, but you should do quite a few to level up, and you should revisit the training ring periodically as you level more to learn new techniques.
the ring fighting also could be easily scripted, but i personally did not like the sword fighting much and always went for a bow. it also allows you for much easier divide and conquer approach during multiple-enemy encounters.
I played it last year and got soft locked in the main quest about 15 hours in, but only realized after another 10 hours of side quests. Usually I wouldn’t start over but in the game I gladly did.
I'm late to the party with Hades, but am enjoying the first game right now.
Also, wow, there's a familiar face in that video! I remember watching Greg Kasavin do reviews for Gamespot back when video reviews were still a pretty new thing. (found one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhb9ZpfU-mQ)
The first game is a masterpiece. I had so much fun discovering all the nooks and crannies of the story. And then doing speed- and challenge-runs afterwards. There’s content and gameplay for years of playing.
Plus it’s singlehandedly responsible for my kids getting deep into Greek mythology.
Do you have any tips for beating higher heat levels? I think I got to around 5 before things just started getting too hard, where I could barely finish a run after multiple tries. Would love to finish the game some day!
I’m not too good at high-heat runs, but I usually enable Tight Deadline level 1 and 2 first, and Extreme Measures 1 and 2, which is already 6 heat without much of a difference in difficulty. Extreme Measures 3 is a bit wild, IMO, but I guess it’s just a matter of practice, and then that’s 9 heat. Middle Management isn’t too bad either, and that’s 2 extra heat.
Other than that, I usually go for Malphon (fists/gloves) with Aspect of Demeter and a build with Ares’ Doom effects on attack and cast, Athene’s dash and special, which usually gives me access to their duo boon: Merciful End which triggers the doom effects when I dash into an opponent of use my special. It’s insanely powerful.
The Hades community on speedrun.com has some good guides and forum posts on builds — and videos of speedruns obviously, there’s a lot to pick up from them as well: www.speedrun.com/hades
How do you make Tight Deadline 2 work? Aside from rare good runs, I seem to spend 10-15 minutes in Asphodel, and 20+ in Elysium (due to my own damage output). Am I just picking the wrong boons?
Any specific enemies you have particular trouble with? I usually don’t run with tight deadline but have noticed that strategy for specific enemies can make a big difference in how easy and quick they are to take down.
And in general, I’ve noticed you tend to get better results dashing towards things rather than away from them. It’s even better with Athena’s dash boon.
I’d say it’s enemies with large amounts of health/shields. Specifically I’m thinking of:
those skeletons in Asphodel that jump around and throw stuff
all the regenerating dudes in Elysium
big rats and satyrs in the last one
For example, I had a run with the bow w/ homing special and Ares boon on special. Every regenerating dude in Elysium felt like at least ~6-8 procs of Doom (even with backstabs etc).
It just keeps getting slower and slower. I’ve tried using the butterfly to increase damage slightly, but that doesn’t seem to be enough.
Ah, yeah the bow is one of my weaker weapons in that game.
One suggestion is to try Poseidon’s main attack boon as that knockback will allow you to stun lock armoured enemies. But personally, I prefer the weapons with faster attacks.
Thank you for the tips! I don’t know if I just got very lucky or if your tips helped me play more aggressively - but I managed to win 5 runs yesterday and finished the main quest!
I played a couple of runs and it reminded me of another tip that might help even more: the secondary damage boons are where you get huge damage boosts. Like the rip current one from Poseidon and extra damage to bosses from knockback boons. Comboing your boons is huge, especially when you can combo into legendaries or duos.
Elysium is definitely the slowest, but time saved carries over, so if you’re fast on Tartarus, you’ll have more time in Asphodel, which is relatively short in terms of number of rooms, and subsequently more time in Elysium.
And as someone else mentioned, it saves time to be aggressive too, so never be idle and try to anticipate where enemies spawn. Enemies without shield (or when the shield is gone) can be stun-locked, so just hammer away at them.
Maybe I’m forgetting how much time and practice I’ve put into going faster, but if I can do it — everyone can, that’s for certain.
Drawing inspiration from speedrun builds is great, so maybe check some of those (linked earlier) out. There are builds for different play styles, so I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you. :)
I have! Can’t butcher things yet which I forgot and also forgot animal people have the food needs of their animal base so maybe I should have started with a goblin adventurer that needs no food or water instead of the eagle woman.
I still wish and hope we get goosemen someday.
I need to be a very naughty horrible goose stealing everyone’s items!
It’s very different. I’ve only just created a party and watched some tutorials, but I have a general idea of what it’s going for, and it’s nearly the polar opposite of fortress mode.
As the other has said, adventurer mode is very different. You control only yourself and a few others at most. You must worry about food and drink and sleep every day instead of it being every so often for dwarves. There is much less about what to do (currently, demigods/chosen will have more godly influence on them maybe?) so you make your own existence.
As a fan of Adventure mode in the legacy version of the game for years, I am excited for the new changes and mechanics that have been in the Steam version since release but in Adventure mode.
Is it a public beta or something I can just click on in the beta tab?
