Does it play like a higher budget game?

I liked the first Outer Worlds a lot. I loved Parvati’s storyline and was so excited when she finally went on that date with Junlei. However, even I’m not paying that much for a sequel.

Megaman_EXE, do gaming w Microsoft is closing down Xbox studio The Initiative, with Perfect Dark killed as well

That was the ONE trailer from this Xbox announcement that I was actually looking forward to. It looked in a fairly playable state, too. I feel like a very broken record, but this is yet another reason why it feels like Microsoft is pulling out of gaming.

Amilo1591, do gaming w Xbox's biggest crisis right now isn't games. It's hardware. (Opinion - Jez Corden)

Xbox hardware is fine, games are fine, controllers are excellent (long battery life), price is fine…

It’s the brand image that’s shit. All thanks to random naming system that erodes any brand loyalty someone would have.

Hdcase,

I agree with you about the brand loyalty. But the fact remains, they put out a console in 2020 that in some ways was actually weaker in power than the console they put out in 2017. Great for customers since it’s so cheap, but not great for developers when other modern systems are so much more powerful. Larian can’t even put out Baldur’s Gate 3 on XSS because it can’t handle split screen for that game, which means no XSX version either.

As for games… Everyone’s different but as a big fan of the Xbox during the 360 era, the Xbox Series have no (exclusive) games that have appealed to me personally. And the ones that I am excited about (Fable, State of Decay 3, Everwild) have no release dates and are almost certainly years away.

Zapp,

Yeah. I stopped buying XBox after they let my account get hacked and restored none of my purchased content.

I occasionally consider giving Xbox another try, but then the whole tiers of systems and naming nonsense takes long enough to parse that I remember why I stopped buying Xboxes.

Until its sub 50 I wouldn’t even consider it and even then… MEH.

Good, they needed to have sense knocked into their incompetent heads. This was such a big price hike in such an economically uncertain time. Thankfully, consumer outrage was strong enough to convince them to lower it back to a price that I still consider too high. I miss the $60 dollar price tag. 🥲

lustyargonian, do gaming w Microsoft is closing down Xbox studio The Initiative, with Perfect Dark killed as well

Classic case of how unrestricted money and a hotch potch of talent doesn’t make a studio. It needs to have strong leadership, vision and some constraints.

Microsoft will never learn that throwing money at the problem isn’t ever the solution.

Happy they didn’t fuck up the originals, but added these as separate titles. Fucking Sony recently pushed a rEmaSteREd Days Gone as a patch and it sucks, the version before looked great at 45 FPS on Steam Deck, this one is in the toilet for dubious gains. They certainly did it so that people who play the game on their ps5 pro don’t notice how much better the game looks and works on the pc.

2000mph, do games w "Age of Mythology: Retold is going to be the most approachable game we have ever built." World's Edge developers talk rebuilding a strategy classic for Xbox and PC.

I didn’t know this was a remake. Never heard of the original. I played Age of Empires 1 & 2. But not this.

How does it compare to AofE then? I might have to give it a try if it’s a simpler game, I don’t have time for complexity now a days.

ballskicker,

I went from AoE1 to OG AoM years and years ago and didn’t think there was a huge jump in feel or quality, but I’m just a filthy casual that plays these on toddler difficulty because I want to relax when I’m gaming. If you’re on my level then you really can’t go wrong, it’s a fun game that can be played in a very simple manner if that’s how you wanna go about it.

JeanMichelVase,

It’s a bit slower paced than AoE2, every civilization is very unique, there is a specific resource called Favour. There are mythical creatures and heroes.
I guess it’s a bit more complex but most of us played the campaign as kids and if you’re used to AoE, you’ll be at home and might find it a bit refreshing.
And the original voicing made the whole game: Voulome !

Donut,

It’s a simpler game for sure. There were only 4 civilizations (Norse, Egyptian, Greek, Atlantian) and they were all very different from one another compared to AoE. Each civilization had multiple deities to choose from for some more specific buffs and abilities. Every type had unique mythical units as well, and these units are quite large so maps felt a bit smaller in comparison. Overall the maps were smaller than AoE anyway, but not in a bad way.

Then instead of stone there was favor, a resource like the rest (food, wood, gold), acquired by putting townies at your temple to pray. All in all it was pretty similar to AoE but it felt a lot less serious. I played a lot at LAN parties and we always had a blast though!

GlendatheGayWitch,

It’s largely the same system. You can play as the Greeks, Norse, or Egyptians. Each civilization has the choice of 3 major gods (is Zeus, Hades, or Poseidon) that choice is kinda like choosing your civilization in AoE. Instead of going feudal age to castle age, you choose a different minor god to worship. Each god gives you a different god power and mythological unit (Cyclops, trolls, anubites, etc). The final civilization upgrade allows you to build a building that unleashes a titan on the map.

There is a new currency called favor that is used to research some improvements unlocked by worshiping specific gods and to train mythological units.

The types of games are largely the same as AoE, with different maps. The campaigns are a lot of fun. It’s a great game, especially if you like mythology. The stories are original and not based on the original myths, but you can learn some of the myths of heroes, mythical creatures, and the gods by right-clicking on them. The campaigns walk you through how to play and through the features that are different from AoE.

You can choose varying difficulty for the scenarios and can choose the difficulty of the computer players when playing a random map. This makes it about as complex as Age of Empires. However, just as with online AoE, the player vs player can have a steep learning curve if you’re matched against people that have been playing a long time.

Age of Empires and Age of Mythology play similarly, where it’s easy to cross from one to the other with many similar human units shared between the games. I think it’s definitely worth a look into! Even the remake that’s already on steam is worth it in my opinion.

skozzii, do games w Xbox Game Pass is getting MAJOR changes, with a new tier without day one games, and a range of price increases

Last day 1 game I tried to play on game pass was starfield, and the queue was so long everytime I tried to play I was unable to play for hours and stopping using the service all together which sucks because I have another year or more left.

Apologies for being out of the loop, but… queue? Isn’t it single-player? Or were they throttling downloads?

Probably Streaming instead of downloading the game.

@Kushia@lemmy.ml avatar

Onus is on them to actually release a good game, not on the potential customer to have any faith especially with their track record. Turning NMS into a decent game was the least they could have done.

tmyakal,

If the current The Day Before drama is anything to go by, Hello Games could’ve done a lot less than turn NMS into a decent game.

Kushia,
@Kushia@lemmy.ml avatar

Maybe but turning it into a good game was the least they could have done in the end for people who gave them money. That would apply to TDB devs too going forward.

Fribbtastic, do gaming w 'Light No Fire' will not repeat the same mistakes of 'No Man's Sky' — here's why you should keep the faith

Yes, blind optimism is the way to go here. /s

I am sorry but if any gaming journalist is not the least amount of sceptical about ANY release today, then they either don’t play games or are sleeping under a rock.

Without a doubt, Hello Games pulled NMS around and made it into a great title but this took years and we also have seen this blind optimism before with Cyberpunk 2077. Even a “wiser” Game studio can fail and not deliver.

Too many titles over the last years were lukewarm even highly anticipated and hyped titles either were “meh” or failed at release. The number of games that redeemed themselves is only a few and can be probably counted on one hand. A gaming Journalist should know about this!

So, I am not even sorry if I am not hyped about it. It does sound interesting but “I believe it when I see it”. There is too much time that has to go down the road for this to come out and there are a lot of things that can/will go wrong in that time.

I rather wait on the reviews.
