You can 100% the first three Spyro games in about 9-12 hours each. The first one can be done without any backtracking, even, since you have the same move set throughout.

I believe modern games take 100% runs way too far. I enjoyed 100%-ing the 3D Mario games… and then I got to Odyssey, and it was such a ridiculous slog that I couldn’t get much further than the standard ending.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Lego Star Wars TCS took a LOT of backtracking… but I did have fun with it. Think it took me about 40 hours by the end?

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Ooh, Oddworld is a good shout. I loved 100%-ing Abe’s Exoddus

Know any good pinball video games? angielski

I recently played through a demo for a game called Pinball Spire on steam, and it put me in the mood for playing pinball games. Unfortunately, and I don’t know if this is just due to me having bad google-foo, there don’t seem to be that many on Steam that catch my interest....

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Off the top of my head:

  • The entire Pro Pinball series
  • Yoku’s Island Express
  • Creature in the Well
  • Pinball FX3
  • 3D Ultra Pinball: The Lost Continent
  • Metroid Prime Pinball
  • Epic Pinball
  • Addiction Pinball

The MD game you’re thinking of is likely to be Psycho Pinball.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Made by the same team as the Pro Pinball games, which is why it’s so darned good.

LunarLoony,

XCOM 2 Legacy Soundtrack. Some darned good beats on there.

A lot of over-designed armour and equipment, too. Especially in multiplayer.

Halo deserves a bit more than a fun action show, yaknow?

LunarLoony,

No, that was Halo Reach

Just me or do aluminium buttons sound really uncomfortable?

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m not sure the NES was affordable per se. On release, it cost about $500 in today’s money. And then you had to buy games at extra cost. In a world where you could go to an arcade with your pocket money and have a decent amount of fun, I don’t think it was a great value proposition in the eyes of many.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Apologies for being out of the loop, but… queue? Isn’t it single-player? Or were they throttling downloads?

Devs should not be "forced to run on a treadmill until their mental or physical health breaks", says publisher of Manor Lords, citing how gamers seem to be trained to expect endless content work now (www.eurogamer.net) angielski

This really does not sound healthy. The game is released, for a certain amount of money. If people don’t like what they get for their money, they simply should not buy it....

I’m a big fan of the 8bitdo Ultimate C, but my favourite may well be the GameCube controller

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Not really, I just think it’s the best controller. Ergonomic shape, octagonal stick gate (which is a criminally underused feature), good button layout… the only thing wrong with it is that the analogue triggers have a bit too much travel on them.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I know the topic isn’t about HR, but as a huge fan of that game, I recently replayed the non-DC version and found myself really appreciating the yellow tint. It ties the aesthetic together, and the DC always looked a bit flat and unfinished without it. But that’s just me.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

“Jank and unfinished” sounds like it fits the immersive sim MO to me! (I mean this with the utmost respect)

LunarLoony,

This is what happens everywhere: they’ll just keep chancing it until such a time as it’s acceptable.

LunarLoony,

Doom II wasn’t boring.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Okay, so while you can’t literally use nothing but the SSG for the entirety of Doom II (especially since you don’t get it until MAP02), you can comfortably use it at least 90% of the time on UV. Shells are plentiful throughout the game.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I can’t believe they’re remastering Combat Evolved again, but not Halo 3.

Well, as long as they do a better job than the original CE Anniversary, I’ll probably play it.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I tend to agree, but it would be nice to play with the nice, rich visuals of Halo 2 Anniversary. And not have to look at Lord Hood’s craggy visage or the slightly polygonal Marine heads.

Reach, on the other hand: no remaster would improve how that game looks. Still a stunning bit of work all these years later.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Pro Pinball Timeshock Ultra Edition, probably

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I hate to be nitpicky; but that’s a decompilation, not a demake.

‘Demake’ usually refers to a game that gets remade for a system older (or less powerful) than the one it was released for. A good current example is the in-progress Super Mario 64 demake for GBA.

‘Decompilation’ is where one reverse-engineers a game (or any software!) back to its original source code, or close enough that when you build it, it’s identical to an original copy. So, the goal of the Lego Island demake is to produce source code that can be built into a fully binary-compatible copy of Lego Island, indistinct from what’s on the original CD.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Correct!

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

For general purpose, I’d say 8bitdo Ultimate C.

I am a huge fan of the GameCube pad and would use it for everything if I could.

For 2D games, particularly fighting games, I’m very fond of the Saturn pad.

However, if I had to pick a best controller ever, it’s got to be the SNES pad. No question.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I agree with your statement. However, what I believe the original comment was saying is that if the developers who have lost their jobs were to get together and make a game as they describe, then they would buy it. The malice was directed at Microsoft and so on.

At least, that’s how I read it…

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Fuck corporations

is precisely what everyone’s been saying this whole time. Nobody’s blaming the devs. Your rant is misplaced.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Guessing XCOM 2, judging by the font.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s an RPG, of course it does! Particularly if you decide to give your character the ‘Bloody Mess’ perk, which causes every enemy to violently and horrifically explode in a shower of miscellaneous chunks.

LunarLoony,

I’d say try one of the older Tekkens, 2-3 or Tag Tournament. They feel a lot better and punchier to me.

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world) angielski

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Counterpoint: budget re-releases of games (e.g. ‘Platinum’ on PlayStation) were often an opportunity to fix bugs, or sometimes even add new features. A few examples:

  • Space Invaders 1500 was a re-release of Space Invaders 2000, with a few new game modes.
  • Spyro: Year of the Dragon’s ‘Greatest Hits’ release added a bunch of music that was missing in the original release.
  • Ridge Racer Type 4 came with a disc containing an updated version of the first Ridge Racer, which ran at 60fps.
  • Super Mario 64’s ‘Shindou Edition’ added rumble pak support, as well as fixing a whole bunch of bugs (famously, the backwards long jump).

Those are just off the top of my head. I’m certain there are more re-releases that represent the true ‘final’ version of a game.

‘Previously On’ from Series 11 is worth a watch. And possibly the episode prior to it if you want context - but the main reason is just because it’s a load of stupid RvB humour and it’s brilliant.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

There’s a similar one called ‘One Chance’, in which you have three days to cure a disease that will otherwise kill everything. Same sorta concept.

Thing is, what’s the alternative? Either you put a hard limit on the inventory, or you give players an infinite inventory. The latter can be made to work, but it also takes away the element of risk.

Perhaps ‘inventory size’ could be tied with difficulty settings. If you want a Deus Ex-type experience where you really have to be picky about what you bring, maybe that should be down to the player; and so should a huge inventory that lets you bring everything everywhere.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

RuneScape has an excellent fast travel system. In fact, it has a whole bunch of 'em, and you have to work for them; either by completing quests, or by training your skills. You can also get items to expand your inventory somewhat, but they only work for specific item types.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I would wager it was a last-minute change as a result of focus testing. There is a lot going on in DK64, and sometimes you’re too close to a game to realise that all those button combinations aren’t the most intuitive to new players - and given the slapped-together nature of the tutorials, it makes me think it was an afterthought at best.
