Players: Can we have more co-op with a sturdy storyline, and maybe offline play?

Game Developers: lol fam 💀

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Truthfully, all sorts of players are asking for all sorts of things, and you’ve got co-op story-driven games still coming out from other sources. Systems-driven games are way up my alley, and I’ll happily take one of those even without co-op. Besides, if a PlayStation game came out with co-op, it wouldn’t be offline co-op.

DarkThoughts,

Yeah. I personally love open world games. Obviously does not mean that every open world game is good but a good open world game can hook you for a much longer time than a linear story based game.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

There are a lot of interpretations of “player freedom” that don’t mean open world.

DarkThoughts,

They said "a lot" of player freedom, so I'd definitely expect quite a bit more than just some dialog choices or whatever. ND also kinda tried to get into more open worldy stuff through their failed multiplayer projects, so it would not surprise me if they took that into a new format.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

There are still a ton of ways to allow for a lot of player freedom without being open world. In fact, I’d say lots of open world games lack the freedom that a much smaller game like Streets of Rogue has, for instance. But yes, Naughty Dog has toyed with open world-ish designs in the Uncharted 4 era and Jak before that.

Midnitte, do gaming w Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford teases Borderlands 4 [VGC]

“So what you’re saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done,” he wrote. “I’m super flattered! We’re working extra hard four you on what’s next….”

…what? Lmao.

Having the best crew doesn’t matter if you’re trying to race the Daytona 500 with a box car with a monkey that was only trained to turn right and to have an actress in her late 50s play a character in her early 20s.

theangriestbird,

wasn’t Randy responsible for the “box car” part?

Midnitte,

You’d think he would have discussed it when he was negotiating.

But, I can’t help but include this hilariousness. https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/502f42e5-cc63-4ad2-a580-cad9c35d67f3.webp

Megaman_EXE, do gaming w Opinion: Phil Spencer, long cast as Xbox’s saviour, may be remembered as the man who killed it

The only xbox exclusive(s) that I can think of that I have enjoyed and come back to in the past decade are the forza horizon games. I’ve had more enjoyment from backwards compatibility and 3rd party titles on my Xbox.

Halo should have been good. But something happened to both bungie and 343 during that split. Bungie had some kind of magic with their specific group from halo CE to reach. They knew what they were making, and they knew exactly how to bring their vision to life.

After the split, it felt like both company’s were limping their releases to the finish line.

To be fair, I think a good portion of the issues are that Microsoft seems to be treating everything like a financial decision and not a creative one. I know this might not be the most popular opinion, but shit I would be happy if they scaled back their games a bit and just made something solid for once on a cheaper budget. I think we’ve seen that people don’t need these massive projects to have fun. If you look at what some of the most popular games have been the past while, a lot are indie games.

I think the saddest part is that the xbox ecosystem during the xbox 360 was so good when it came to community features. Party chat was a game changer, and it made the system feel like a hub to gather friends. A lot of the games available were perfect for groups. Now because the games have been suffering, a lot of my friends have moved to various platforms. It’s become less social and a lot less fun. Of course this is anecdotal and less of a tangible issue for Microsoft. But it’s these long term issues that have cause a cascading effect of corroding their brand.

What percentage of PC players care about couch co-op?

halfwaythere,

What percent of PC players have friends. Let alone come over to play on the couch?

anamethatisnt,

I much rather fix up some burgers and drink a few pints at home while playing helldivers 1 with friends than sit at the pub eating worse burgers and paying too much for the pints.

anamethatisnt,

Those of us who live with fellow nerds, obviously!

echodot,

I don’t know of any popular games that have it anymore. It’s not something I’d actually expect to exist in a game anymore.

I think it used to be a feature in games back when computers were expensive, but these days that’s not so much the case and if I want to with my partner, well she has her own computer.

It’s not like only nerds have computers now. Basically everyone comes with at least a laptop.

anamethatisnt, (edited )

Definitely rarer now, but four people sitting in the living room with controllers is still as fun. Helldivers, Magicka, Overcooked, Totemori, Gang Beasts and Genital Jousting are all great fun with some being easier to get into than others.

zecg,
@zecg@lemmy.world avatar

I really always prefer local coop but it doesn’t work well when it’s 3rd person over the shoulder and you have to split the screen into two different viewports.

anamethatisnt,

I agree that their choice of perspective makes local coop harder to implement due to needing splitscreen, it also means I wouldn’t want to play it with a controller.
I just hope that they keep their Helldivers 1 servers up and about, or release a patch that makes the game work offline if they don’t.

Paradachshund, do games w Ubisoft CEO defends Skull and Bones’ $70 price despite its live service leanings, calls it ‘quadruple-A’

Quadruple A must mean when you spend so many years in development hell that the game costed another A’s worth of budget.

dangblingus, do games w Hogwarts Legacy has officially cleared Zelda as 2023's best-selling game worldwide

Culture wars sell games. If not for all of the noise surrounding JK Rowling, the right wing contingent of the internet probably would have passed it over as “a game for kids”. If comment sections are any metric to go by, everyone that played it either thought it was completely mid or bought it to own the libs.

blazeknave,

Why you downvoted? You’re right. They’re mean fucking trolls with the character of a child. They’re obsessed with triggering others. This is their MO.

I came here to write something along the lines of “fuck that Nazi terf piece of shit” but saw your comment first.

dangblingus,

What’s hilarious to me is that, while the downvotes mean nothing in the long run, I’m hardly sharing a unique opinion, even on this thread.

yamanii,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

Because they are wrong? You don’t actually think everyone that bought it is a trumptard do you? Please touch grass, twitter drama isn’t relevant to the real world.

trafficnab,

I don’t get the whole “this game isn’t even good, there’s no way it was the best selling game of the year without rightoids overwhelmingly buying it simply to own the libs” idea when year after year after year the best selling games are Call of Duty X+1, Madden X+1, and FIFA X+1

A game doesn’t need to be good to be popular, and I’d bet probably 99% of the owners are just normal people who aren’t even aware of the controversy

dangblingus,

Right, but COD is good. Good in the sense that it’s been refined over the years to give gamers the ultimate fast paced arcade FPS experience. The controls are tight and responsive, and the game is easy to understand. It’s essentially one of the hallmarks of the genre. But yes, the political controversy surrounding the game was above and beyond the controversy surrounding yearly COD releases. The sales numbers speak for themselves.

LainTrain,

Correct. I’ve never bought a video game in my life and I ain’t about to start but everyone had a take on that shit, it was so tiresome, I imagine for a lot of babytrans/babylgbt it might’ve been a shock that people will choose a game of their beloved childhood corporate intellectual property over being allies and that being allies was to a lot of people always virtue signaling, but I was far too cynical to let that bother me at that point.

cyberpunk007, do games w Square Enix’s president says it will be ‘aggressive in applying’ AI

AI is such an annoying buzzword at this point. “oh have you heard of AI? We need AI!” Say every industry, and probably even the dairy industry.

mcc,

But why not? If an industry isn’t already fully automated, AI can be considered no?

dangblingus,

No. Hence why it’s a buzzword. The CEOs don’t know how it works, just that it somehow reduces payroll. For AI to do what you want it to do, you have to train it on hundreds of thousands of relevant data points over many weeks/months/years. That takes manpower, and consequently, payroll.

Also, games are supposed to be art. An expression of the humans creating it. Automating the games industry would make any MBA grad jizz in their pants, but it’s antithetical to the survival of the medium and, consequently, the industry. You want nothing but freemium games meant to milk kids of their parents money? Nothing but shitty mobile games and live services from now on then.

Skates,

The ‘why not’ is not from the perspective of the industry - it’s from the perspective of the customer. Can you automate several tasks by using AI during game development? Sure. Will it translate into a better price or a better experience for the end-user? Let’s see.

Let’s say you give AI the unimportant tasks. You manage to reduce a lot of waste and maybe optimize your workflows. You improve efficiency. Maybe you can make more games in a shorter time span. Will you be willing to sell the games for less than the standard $60? I find this unlikely. This impacts me as a consumer - why don’t I see a reduction in cost, if it now costs less? Why am I still paying the same price for something that your improved tools can make at a fraction of the cost? Didn’t my previous purchases already give you enough money to invest in AI? Where is my benefit?

Let’s say you give AI the big tasks - you make it write story, generate graphics or code. But AI’s current level doesn’t allow for originality, or even cohesive thought. You’ll be churning out garbage until your AI is actual intelligence. This again impacts me as a consumer - why am I sponsoring your experiments with my money? Why am I paying the same for garbage as I would for quality content? Will you share your end-game profit with me? If I buy your first games to support your endeavor, do I get the next versions for free? No. I don’t. I’m just wasting money on inferior products, and when they become superior - I will reap no benefits.

So - sure, let the companies throw themselves at this. But I’m not investing my own cash in their research.
