ampersandrew, do games w Xbox CEO: Consoles are a 'good, established business' and a 'really healthy part' of Game Pass

Yeah, but the headline cuts out that part where they’re not growing. I think more customers can do math than console manufacturers are willing to admit, or at least more than Sony and Nintendo are willing to admit. The word’s out about how much that online subscription is going to cost you for multiplayer over the years, and if they were interested in running a console the way that consoles have always been run, the lowest hanging fruit to keep that going and to be competitive would be to remove that cost; they’re making it up in digital sales anyway. My guess is that once the new Xbox is just a disguised Windows PC, that will be when they drop the requirement of Live/Game Pass for online multiplayer.

Also worth noting that sometime in the past week or so, maybe, they’ve changed their messaging on Game Pass. They put so much of their weight behind that thing trying to become the Netflix of video games, as a way of pivoting in a world where they can’t compete with PlayStation by doing what PlayStation does, only to end up with a fraction of the subscriber base that they expected to have. It’s a lucrative base nonetheless, but now that they’re decidedly not the Netflix of video games, they’re just leaning into being the industry’s largest publisher.

Well, the Xbox has been a disguised Windows PC since the Xbox One

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

But not to the point that you could load up your Steam account or a random Windows game disc from your shelf. That’s the thing that’s likely to change, which has a profound impact on the library you can play on that machine, not to mention your ability to play online without a subscription fee.

I’m not giving them or Valve any shit. I have a living room PC running Bazzite, and I had a Steam Machine back in the day. That’s a product I want. And Microsoft is reacting to market realities before their competition is, because none of them wanted the gravy train to end, but it is ending.

For what it’s worth, I’ve got a number of friends, all in their 30s, who swear by Game Pass, as at least most of them are the type to bounce around to as many games in a given year as they possibly can without sweating if they finish them or not. Many they don’t even like, but they like to have formed their own opinion on them. It doesn’t make sense for me, as I do value getting to keep the game when I’m done, so that I can revisit it whenever I want.

All of my traditional consoles are collecting dust, and just moments ago before reading your comment, I was evaluating whether or not it makes sense to get rid of my PS4.

I found out a few days ago that my PS4 is no longer accepting Blu Rays, and my basic troubleshooting steps were unsuccessful, which severely diminishes the value I get from that machine, hence my deliberations minutes ago, lol. I have to ask myself how happy I’d be with the PC version of Until Dawn the next time I want to revisit that game, because that’s about the only game on that system I’d want to play that I couldn’t run better on PC. I couldn’t even be bothered to finish Bloodborne at the frame rate it’s got on a legitimate PS4.

Updates that fix bugs come to PC far earlier than Xbox sometimes never coming at all. Games, when not on gamepass, even from Microsoft, are typically cheaper on other platforms. And sometimes they just don’t even put content on the Xbox

Last fall was halo 2’s 20th anniversary. If you only played Xbox, you could have forgotten it. Microsoft did nothing on the Xbox about it. But on PC, they promoted the released E3 demo levels

Finally there’s the lack of investment in any hardware upgrades. The controllers still use the same crap alps stick modules, the vibration is still two big dumb motors, and the buttons are still just graphite pads on a PCB. Even on the $200 elite controllers. There’s no single channel wireless headset available first party, just stereo ones, and the add on storage still remains horrifically overpriced years later

I don’t think this guy sleeps, but I am ready to give them more money.

Stardew Valley is hands down the best farming sim.

LastYearsIrritant, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

I think we’d all enjoy a fresh take on SDV. There’s probably a ton he’d like to change, but can’t without having to rework the whole thing.

He did a fantastic job making the game what it is by adding slowly to the game, but it’s certainly pretty disjointed and limited in a lot of ways.

    Donjuanme,

“gamers” would have a cow if there was ever a sequel seriously discussed. He already charged them once, how dare he charge them again.

I suspect 10-20% of the community would take that stance, even if it’s only a few%, it would absolutely be magnified by the echo chamber and there will be talk or how concerned ape left stardew valley “incomplete” and it’s "abandon-ware"and all future products should be pirated.

    EncryptKeeper,

Not sure where you’re coming from. Stardew Valley was completed years ago and the guy has actually kept releasing free content updates nobody even asked for. People are actually getting annoyed at him for continuing to update it since he’s supposed to be working on his next game.

    mnemonicmonkeys,

Plus the updates keep breaking mods. Part of why I’m holding off on another playthrough is that I’m worried he’s going to add one more update as soon as I finish a modlist and boot up

    neon_nova,

I think you’re pretty safe. 1.6 just came out like a year ago. I think you will be good for a few years.

    mnemonicmonkeys,

There were smaller updates after 1.6 for months, all the way into December

    Ghoelian,

You could also just… not update.

    Canadian_Cabinet,

ConcernedApe isn’t EA. People love him and are happy to give him their money. I know many people that have Stardew on multiple platforms

    vxx,

That’s me. PS4, Switch, PC and on phone.

    iAmTheTot,

You’re so far off base it’s hilarious. A Stardew Valley 2 would be hype as hell.

    Donjuanme,
    iAmTheTot,

That takes me to a login page, fyi.

He hasn’t had a great streak in completing progress in haunted chocolatier because he keeps getting pulled back into stardew valley ports and making new content for stardew valley. If he and his collaborators soon have to support both stardew valley and haunted chocolatier across multiple platforms, I don’t expect development on a new stardew valley game to progress quickly at all. I would expect half life 3 like timelines.

TachyonTele, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

No one in the comments read even just the post body, much less the tldr in the article, or any of the article at all…

    Empricorn,

I came here from Reddit where we argued about headlines… What’s an “article”?

gonzo-rand19, (edited ) do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

I want him to stop because he keeps breaking the mods that I need to make this game how I want it. I haven't played anything past 1.4 or 1.5 because the update broke one of my favourite mods and I can no longer enjoy the game the way I did for years.

Work on Haunted Chocolatier or make Stardew Valley 2 so I can pick up the pieces and finish this fucking game. Otherwise I just can't fucking play without immense fear that a really important mod will break again at some point. Literally the opposite of a chill time.

Edit: I'm mentally ill, if that wasn't clear. I don't expect him to stop, I just want him to. Don't care if that's unpopular.

    donuts,

Dare I ask what kind of mod you’re talking about?

    Empricorn,

Apparently they don’t want to specify which ones, for some reason.

    Empricorn,

I didn’t downvote you for your opinion, but I’m curious: what mods are more important to you than the updates Concerned Ape added to the game?

    Lesrid,

Yeah these mods sound like they’re worth my time

    Elevator7009, (edited )

If you play on Steam, here’s two threads on how to stop it from auto-updating.

    One

    Two

I suggest reading all the comments and not just the original post because they mention multiple ways and complications to it. They are both pretty short threads.

    gonzo-rand19,

That's awesome, thank you, but the damage is already done and the mods are already broken. I am mostly interested now in hearing that it's done being updated so that I can go through it at my own pace with all of the content it will ever have and QoL and visual mods that still work. I appreciate you though.

MoonlightFox, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

I totally get why he prefers to just update SDV.

He is already rich from the original game. He loves expanding on it. People love him for the additional content.

So there is not a huge incentive for him to not just do exactly what he likes and expand SDV indefinitely 😄

    Donjuanme,

Rebuilding from code up instead of continuously adding to an overburdened foundation, I don’t know why he’d want to start fresh at all. And he can’t just rebuild and re release because the "mod scene"would pitch a fit

Yermaw, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

That sounds to me like “ain’t gonna happen mate but I don’t want to upset you”.

Which I’m kinda happy about. All the updates to stardew have been free and I want more. More. MORE.

    Tarquinn2049,

I think it might happen in 10, 15, 20 years… but not any sooner than that.

BroBot9000, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2
    @BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

Please no. SDV is amazing and the updates have been wonderful but I’d much rather he would move on and continue working on original projects like his Haunted Chocolatier.

    Drusas,

He already said Haunted Chocolatier is getting his full attention next.

    Imacat,

He’s just gotta do one more little stardew patch first. And then another.

    Revan343,

Bro. Bro, just one more Stardew Valley patch bro.

    kboy101222,

I’ll believe it on the day it drops lol. Until then, I’m looking forward to 1.7

I recently recommended the game to my wife and since then she tells me every day what her progress is and what she hates about the game and how tedious it is and how bad and inconsistent the controls are. And then she’s off to play more.

    Lesrid,

The controls really are awful, not sure how console folks can enjoy the game

    bamboo,

having played maybe 500 hours with controller only, maybe I don’t know what I’m missing, but the controls don’t seem that bad. Only thing which comes to mind as terrible is the slingshot, i never even try to use that.

    Tarquinn2049, (edited )

Recently? Or early on? The slingshot controls got an accuracy rework and also the option to be aim direction instead of pullback direction if the player prefers.

I think most of the control issues for new players unfamiliar with the genre is how precise you need to be to water crops and stuff. Those of us that have been playing farm sims(not farming simulations, totally different beast once you write both words in full like that, lol) for decades already probably don’t even remember a time when it was tough to manually align our tools to the grid. For a lot of people, stardew is their first one, and for a decent subset of them, it’s not just their first farming sim, but their first video game on a controller.

There have also been grid aligning innovations in other farming sims for onboarding new players. Some games have a modifier key you can hold down that basically turn the analog into digital movement while holding it. Your character will move exactly one grid space at a time and keep facing the same direction. That sort of thing can help, but honestly, probably better to just make the game fun enough that people are willing to keep playing while they are bad at it, to eventually get good at it. Not every farm sim can accomplish that.

    bamboo,

The issue I had with slingshot was in whatever version released for the switch at release, maybe in 1.3? Tbh I have not tried with the slingshot in newer versions

    Phen,

Now that you mention it, I remember that I would play it with mouse + controller for some reason (back at 1.0), not sure why I picked that as the best way to play but there was probably something bad about using the keyboard and also something bad about not using a mouse.

    Transtronaut,

Having originally cut my teeth on Harvest Moons on SNES, N64, PS, PS2, and DS, I found the controls for Stardew Valley mind-blowingly good.

But that might have been because it was my first time playing a game like that with mouse and keyboard.

    mnemonicmonkeys,

I originally played it on my desktop and now on my Steam Deck. The controls for controllers aren’t bad

    Phen,

The slow movement is what kept me from playing it forever. I know there’s mods that improve it, but I wish the base speed would be higher.

Back at 1.0 launch it also had a bug where walking diagonally was even slower, so that may have affected my judgment as well - it was fixed after a week or so.

    iAmTheTot,

In case you’re not aware, there are ways to increase your speed within the game which feel like earned progress.

    LunarLoony,
    @LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Once you get coffee beans and a greenhouse, you’re basically set

    Tarquinn2049,

There are plenty of both permanent and temporary speed increases, with the permanent ones you are almost as fast as the horse. And with temporary ones you can be faster than it. No need for mods, just base game. And these are things you easily earn part way through the first year.

    Sciaphobia,

I don’t recall there being permanent move speed increases at all, but it has been some time since I played. I think there second island was relatively new when I last plagued. Is that something that was added, or something I missed when I played before?

    Tarquinn2049,

Not sure specifically when they were added, but they are there now. Play the game once every 3 years or so, hehe. Last playthrough we did a 6 player group game. Basically played it like it was dnd sessions. That playthrough had the move speed stuff. Comes from a book seller. So if you know when that book seller was added, it would be then probably.

    Sciaphobia,

I don’t think there was a book seller when I last played. Neat. Thanks!

Donjuanme, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

Man I should’ve read through the comments before I made a reply comment to another person, I could’ve added a source for every one of my “games will complain about X if a sequel is released” just from the comments here.

How about he add multiplayer to mobile already so I can play with my family without having to break out the laptops or steam links.
