MilliaStrange, do gaming w Former Kotaku writers are launching a new video game site — and they own it this time

I subscribed and I liked what I’m reading so far! I liked their Alan Wake article and how it celebrated the cheesy elements of Remedy’s work…listened to all the Alan Wake songs and Take Control on my train ride this morning :D

oo1, do games w Microsoft’s Phil Spencer says acquiring Nintendo would be ‘a career moment’

How dumb is a person to define a "career moment" as buying something.

Aren't careers are suppoed to be about creating things that other people want to buy.

Rouxibeau,

That’s his goal. His plan is to bolster xbox sales with Nintendo IPs.

ikapoz,

Not very. Negotiating and executing a deal of that size and complexity cross cutting major national, cultural, and business universes would be extremely difficult

if they fix how asinine the leveling system is i’d be interested.

rodolfo,

leveling system it’s so that I start a new game once in a while just to get 100 EVERYWHERE. I’ve already fucked it up at arrows tutorial.

corrupts_absolutely,

im sure its the one thing they keep

joyjoy, do games w Microsoft documents leak new Bethesda games, including an Oblivion remaster

They better not fix any bugs in that Fallout 3 remaster.

sugar_in_your_tea,

They’ll just introduce new, less interesting bugs.

sentient_loom, do games w Microsoft documents leak new Bethesda games, including an Oblivion remaster

Gimme that Oblivion remaster.

WarmSoda,

The Oblivion remaster (originally set for fiscal year 2022).

Don’t hold your breath

sentient_loom,

Aw fuck.

GreenMario,

So it’s almost done…?

The Fallout 3 remaster (fiscal year 2024)

If you consider that A Tale of Two Wastelands -- where people forward-ported the Fallout 3 world to the Fallout: New Vegas engine and ruleset -- was successful, that could be pretty solid. I still think I'd forward-port Fallout: New Vegas to the current Bethesda engine before I'd forward-port Fallout 3, though. Fallout: New Vegas was a better game.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas#Tale_of_Two_Wastelands

Tale of Two Wastelands

Tale of Two Wastelands is a total conversion mod for Fallout: New Vegas that merges the entire content of Fallout 3 and its DLC and New Vegas into one game. The mod implements features introduced in New Vegas into Fallout 3, such as the Companion Wheel, crafting recipes, and weapon mods. Players can freely traverse between the two games on a single save file, keeping all of their items and their progression between game worlds.[76][77][78][79]

Also, most Fallout: New Vegas mods worked with Tale of Two Wastelands, which was pretty cool.

Nutteman,

Remaster not remake. Bethy isn’t gonna be putting time or effort into rebuilding their old games in the newer engine versions.

Rheios, (edited )

I wouldn’t want Fallout 4’s incongruous fps shooting or the terrible “perk” system tainting FNV, tbh. Frankly I’d be pleased with the arrangement that Bethesda never touches FNV or anything related to it again, but blue sky thinking’s just that.

Lojcs, do games w This is Microsoft’s new disc-less Xbox Series X design with a new gyro controller

Apparently the new controller is also more silent. I wish it wasn’t so ugly tho

GillyGumbo,

I thought the same. I think it’s mostly the gloss that is making me not like it. Hopefully with the amount of variation Microsoft typically offers with controllers means the will be something that I can stomach.

conciselyverbose,

I could see the utility of the textured surface if it has the durability, but holy hell does it look bad if it's actually just cut in half for colors like that.

If that's just for demonstration and the split is more naturally contoured, maybe it's OK.

aPirate, do piracy w Japanese YouTuber convicted of copyright violation after uploading Let’s Play videos

It seems to be the trend countries and companies pushing harder against piracy.

MayonnaiseArch,

Seeing somebody play a game is piracy?

aPirate,

Yeah its unfortunate that copyright law is abused so easily and often. Seems like it depends from case to case, one time its fine the next its not.

Damage, do games w Saints Row developer Volition permanently shuts down

We have to remember that it’s the people who make the games, not the companies. I expect the talent will find work somewhere else, and hopefully create something great once again.

InverseParallax,

They won’t.

You don’t understand, it’s not the companies that make everything suck, it’s the management, modern software management crushes the beauty out of both the work and the design, and passionate visionaries are displaced for marketing droids with PowerPoint slides about dlc monetization through nfts.

AlbertScoot, do games w AMD claims there’s nothing stopping Starfield from adding Nvidia DLSS

I mean, this has always been the case. This is a practice going back decades for video card manufacturers.

TheEntity, do games w Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Store to close in July 2024

Will we be able to still access the games already on the HDD?

simple,

From the article:

If you already own a bunch of Xbox 360 digital games, they’ll continue to be playable. You just won’t be able to purchase new games or DLC from an Xbox 360 console.

Empricorn,

That… actually doesn’t answer it. If the games I paid for only exist on my hard drive and not on any store… what happens when the drive eventually fails?

Lemmitor,

They stated that you will still be able to redownload games you’ve already purchased. You just won’t be able to make new purchases. It’s kind of weird that the original article left that part out considering it’s what most people would care about.

gk99, do gaming w Microsoft Teams is now part of the Xbox Game Bar so you can stream gameplay to friends - The Verge

Wtf who is this for

Probably the same use case as Discord’s streaming feature.

vanderbilt,

Sure but at least Discord actually works. Teams has always been a buggy mess any time I have had to use it. Furthermore, Discord doesn’t shove itself into every opportunity in an effort to remind me of its existence.

shiveyarbles, do gaming w Roblox is ready to grow up

Roblox is what Meta vr aspired to be. It’s kids socializing, creating things, selling them, playing with each other, playing against each other. The user created content can be quite good, my 13 year old always goes back to Roblox like he used to with Minecraft.

bandario,
@bandario@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I am having a really hard time being supportive of my daughter’s use of Roblox.

We supervise reasonably closely so I’m not overly concerned about it from a child safety point of view even though the platform has a long history of not being a particularly safe online space.

The part that I’m worried about is that 99% of the content seems totally and utterly pointless. Most games have zero objectives and just centre on some stupid novelty game mechanic: oh, your neck gets longer, or you can be a wolf. What do we do now? Oh, we just walk around. We’re a wolf.

There’s nothing to achieve, there’s no skill involved, no mastery of a game mechanic. It just seems completely without value to me. I’m stuck questioning if I’m just out of touch or if I should try and guide her towards taking on something a little more challenging.

The only part I like is that she plays with her school friends on the platform - they use external voice comms and just kind of hang out…I just wish they would do the same thing on a game that would challenge them in some way.
