Why is the dpad censored?

MrQuallzin,

That’s just what it looks like now

spooky2092,

Wow, what MBA thought that was a cool look?

pycorax,

It’s so that’ it’s easier to perform directional actions. I personally like it from a usability standpoint.

Resol,

The original Duke, S controller, and Xbox 360 controllers all have similar D-pads. I actually forgot they switched to a traditional one.

givesomefucks, do games w BDS calls for boycott of Microsoft and Xbox gaming products over alleged Israeli military connections

Part of why it’s so ridiculous some Americans are legally prohibited from participating in BDS, is people only know if you tell them.

You can just not buy it and never mention why.

And unfortunately, lots of people aren’t even aware it’s illegal:

suite403,

We’re so freeeeee!

Katana314,

This whole thing has erupted on my radar in the past month ever since they abducted the girl from Tufts.

HOW does this genocidal state have such an insane stranglehold on our country?

Now I’m getting YouTube ads to demonize Hamas; apparently their effort to “pull people back” and get people sympathetic for October 7 hostages. I AM sympathetic to the hostages!…So why is Israel bombing them??

givesomefucks,

HOW does this genocidal state have such an insane stranglehold on our country?

Before AIPAC there was another Israeli organization that donated to politicians.

After years of fighting a committee ruled that it had to register as a foreign agent.

So Israel created AIPAC and then gave Max donations to the people on the committee that decides who has to register as a foreign agent.

Which is why AIPAC has never had to register.

As both parties continually got rid of campaign finance law, AIPAC kept increasing what they gave, and started throwing insane money at anyone critical of Israel in the primary when it’s cheap.

Over decades they’ve bought the only two options and ensured the only two options were peo-Israel over anything else

The worst part …

They’re not the only organization, even foreign country. Doing this to ensure they always win.

Luckily while Ken Martin does have a pro-Israel bias, while running Minnesota he was one of the few state chairs who refused to work against anti-genocide Dems in primaries or generals. Which resulted in Minnesota being one of the progressive strongholds despite no one guessing it would shake out that way a decade ago.

So I want to be clear:

The people fucking up the DNC for decades is gone, we need to support the new DNC to keep it out of their hands. The people running the DNC six months ago wants the current DNC to take the fall so they can move back in.

ninjaphysics, do gaming w BDS calls for boycott of Microsoft and Xbox gaming products over alleged Israeli military connections

I’d like to think I’m pretty decent at sticking to boycotts, but holy hell, my work platform is Microsoft and their products, and I run gaming servers for my friends online and play through game pass. This is going to be so hard for people to step back and not use their platforms and software if they’re in it like me. Not sure how to proceed.

thejml,

Oh the flip side, I have a Bazzite desktop rig running Proton/Steam for gaming and a PS5 and Switch. I’m not in the market for an Xbox and have bought one since the OG… so I’ll just keep not buying their stuff I guess? I feel like boycotting things I’m not buying anyway doesn’t really send a message.

ninjaphysics,

You’re at least making up for my inability to step away from it atm. I wouldn’t have bought into the environment had it not been for my partner, and work of course. I grew up on PS and PC gaming, just recently started using Xbox. Damn it.

Strawberry,

No they are not

amino,

as a bazzite user, it’s kinda ironic that they’re dependent on GitHub cloud to keep their updates going. I wonder if they have a non-apartheid version?

trevor, (edited )

The problem with replacing GitHub with something that isn’t owned by genocidal Microsoft is that GitHub provides a fuckload of free compute via their runners. If you migrate away from that to another smaller service, suddenly you’ve got to pay for your automated builds (or lose them).

I fear that many FOSS projects simply wouldn’t be popular if they had to be built manually from source by end users.

amino,

maybe they could use a donation model like fediverse instances do

amino,

start with the stuff that’s easy to get rid of and the rest will snowball down the line.

as for your workplace using Microsoft, nobody expects you as an individual to force your company to stop using them. the best way to achieve that in my opinion is through unions and collective actions.

ninjaphysics,

Smart approach to go to the union, didn’t think to do that. Thanks!

amino,

yeah, a bunch of unions have already put out support statements for BDS. list them as an example for your own union to follow

Kwakigra,
@Kwakigra@beehaw.org avatar

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, because in that case it usually ends up being nothing. If you have the desire to limit what you described in any way you can as much as you can, it’ll be something. If everyone does as much as they can, it’ll be a huge something.

biggestmapfan, do games w GeoGuessr is making its way to Steam next month after almost 12 years of sticking it out as a browser game

Amazing news! It’s great to see GeoGuessr coming to Steam! 🥰 This should make playing on Steam Deck much smoother. I just hope there’s a free option (even with ads). On the web, most people have switched to free alternatives like FreeGuessr. If they go with a monthly subscription on Steam, I’m not sure it will work.

warm, do games w GeoGuessr is making its way to Steam next month after almost 12 years of sticking it out as a browser game

Was good until they hiked the prices, removed free play and ruined the interface. Would highly recommend Geotastic instead.

biggestmapfan,

Geotastic is definitely a great alternative! If I could add another it would be https://freeguessr.com/. You can turn off street names, it doesn’t have Ads and you can play No Move or Blink Mode directly from the game.

warm,

There's a few, like Openguessr too. But they are not really Geoguessr alternatives in the same way Geotastic is, with all the community features, I also like the transparency Geotastic has with running costs, I can donate to cover my own usage without overspending for profiteering like is the case with Geoguessr now.

Safipok, do games w GeoGuessr is making its way to Steam next month after almost 12 years of sticking it out as a browser game

Volatility of a business based on Google Maps seems to be very painful from observing GeoGuessr.

narc0tic_bird,

Yeah, GeoGuessr is an extreme example as Google basically did 95% of the work for them. Having to image large chunks of the world would mean a huge investment and I highly doubt GeoGuessr would even exist without Google Maps.

If Google would double their API pricing tomorrow there’s very little GeoGuessr can do except maybe switch to Apple Maps (they offer an API, not sure they offer one for their “street view” data though).

Th3D3k0y,

I mean they do require a subscription now to play GeoGuessr, so could be they are planning

SgtAStrawberry,

From what I remember the subscription was added because Google raised the price of the API.

Lootboblin,
@Lootboblin@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, this easy pass.

VitoRobles,

Haha! You’re in the Gulf of Mexico!

[Depending on where you’re located determines if this is a right or wrong answer]

Safipok,

Companies are subject to the places they operate in and not following it could have consequences. I remember Guardian having to censor stuff due to UK court order. My gripe is that they are going diving into the military contract business that they had control over but still got into due to money.

biggestmapfan,

Yeah, considering that the whole game is dependent on Google Maps, they can end it any time. I just hope GeoGuessr has a good partnership with them. I saw somewhere that they pay millions per year for the maps!

Why?

Menschlicher_Fehler,
@Menschlicher_Fehler@feddit.org avatar

Money.

halcyoncmdr,
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

They already added a subscription.

Up front cost cannot cover the ongoing API costs they must be paying for Google Maps. So either this has to be free and just a front end for the same shit, or they’ll still end up net negative.

warm,

They are adding a "Steam pass", which doesn't let you play on the web and your web subscription doesnt let you play the Steam version. Just play Geotastic instead.

I found out recently that steam now let’s devs create subscriptions as opposed to one-time charges, so it’s 110% that

Appoxo,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ain’t no way I’ll pay that.
I would have discussed if it meant a one time payment but hell nah.

KoalaUnknown,

Google Maps API isn’t free

@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I mentioned one time pay.
If it’s that expensive, I can’t help you (or the devs) because I won’t play it then :-)

inb4 java edition becomes unplayable on older systems even with render distance set to lowest

FearMeAndDecay,

Apparently you’ll be able to toggle between the new lighting and the old lighting, so hopefully that isn’t a problem

jaggedrobotpubes, do games w Minecraft Gets Major Visual Overhaul With Volumetric Lighting And Enhanced Shadows

Can it handle that? It already runs worse on new beast systems than old versions did on average ones.

cool, hopefully they don’t fuck up the Java release.
