overload, (edited ) do gaming w The eagerness to grave dance on unpopular games has become a bad habit

Bad headline but reasonable argument within. Concord probably failed for the reasons people outlined, sure.

The point is that peoples fingers aren’t quite as on the pulse of what will make something successful as what we give ourselves credit for. We attribute reasons for something’s success or failure after the fact.

Personally, I don’t know what makes a hero shooter successful or not. A game like this could be going gangbusters for some reason in 6 months time and I would probably not understand why. I say that as someone who’s been an avid gamer over the last 30 years.

TheEighthDoctor, do games w Shadows of Doubt, the procgen private-eye immersive sim, is leaving early access next month

I have to try it again, the first time I tried I didn’t understand anything or what I was suppose to be doing.

Shiggles,

If my experience is anything to go by, you mug everybody you see, steal everything in their wallet to “identify them”, interrogate them while vomiting drunk in their apartment, and maybe solve a murder or two on accident.

Makhno,

So this is just an American cop sim? Minus the spousal abuse

bionicjoey,

There is a tutorial mission to show you some of the basics.

WaterSword, do games w Doom Eternal's new official mod support includes 'the very same tools' used to create the game
@WaterSword@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Cool to see behind the scenes at modern IdTech tools

Dark_Arc,
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

I wish they released the engine like they used to. IdTech whatever version we’re on now has to be epic.

WaterSword,
@WaterSword@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It’s kind of awesome to think every call of duty game, valve game and Id software game still all use an engine that originated from quake!

Dark_Arc,
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

I don’t know if they really do… I mean they’re derived from it, but it’s pretty unlikely any of the quake code is in CS2 or the latest call of duty.

Quake is definitely a legend though just for creating the PvP FPS scene.

WaterSword,
@WaterSword@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I mean if you trace it back far enough, the engines used are in fact forks of the quake engine (IdTech 2). I’m sure there’s some simple system somewhere that’s still the same in all engines all these years later

Fast forward to today, it’s kind of terrifying that the proprietors of DirectX effectively own the poster-child Vulkan game engine for both performance & visual fidelity.

thesporkeffect, do gaming w Xbox executives just cannot give a straight answer to questions about Tango Gameworks

Left unsaid: the developers were starting to ask for more money and creative freedom than MS was willing to give, and had to be taught a lesson.

Also the market demands sacrifices.

Left unsaid: the developers were starting to ask for more money and creative freedom than MS was willing to give, and had to be taught a lesson.

is there any evidence of this? It would give MS an excuse, which makes me wonder

BasketKees,

If that were true, ‘No’ is also an answer. Total Annihilation does not seem like the only option and certainly not an option to use as a lesson. Can’t teach a dead pupil.

Dagnet, do games w FromSoftware says Elden Ring's popular Seamless Co-op mod is 'definitely not something we actively oppose,' and may even 'consider ideas like that with our future games'

They should ‘consider’ the ultrawide mod too

Cowbee, do gaming w Casper Van Dien is loving the Starship Troopers renaissance but still finds it mind-boggling some take it at face value

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve seen this a few times, ca you explain this to me? Is it a way of talking about people that consider themselves capital G gamers without having them come in and ruin the conversation with whining or gamergate bs?

Cowbee,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s just pretending Gamer is a slur, that’s it.

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Gotcha, thanks!

Zehzin,
@Zehzin@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not a slur, but I’m doing everything in my power to turn it into one

Cowbee,

Godspeed o7

Zahille7,

I support this movement

TrousersMcPants,

It’s a joke about writing slurs and censoring them with an asterisk, implying Gamer is a slur

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Ah gotcha, thanks. I will say, I don’t like being called a gamer because I don’t want to get lumped in with the whiny chuds so I get it

ArmoredThirteen, do gaming w Less than 6 months after laying off 40 employees, Dead by Daylight studio Behaviour Interactive drops another 95

Ah taking notes from how Unity fired people. Slow and steady to ensure morale is as ruined as possible

BroBot9000, do gaming w The future of gaming belongs to weird, little games
@BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

Small indie studios instead of the hulking meat grinders of corporate giants.

proper, do games w I'm so annoyed that they're calling the new hobbit game 'A The Lord of the Rings Game'
@proper@lemmy.world avatar

“Tales from the Shire: A Lord of the Rings game” they probably just have a few “A Lord of the Rings game”(s) in the pipeline

brian,

So I missed it the first time. But the title is “A The Lord of the Rings Game”. Assumedly to maintain copyright, they did not drop the “The” from “The Lord of the Rings” even though they started with “A”

catloaf,

That would probably be trademark, not copyright.

MonkderDritte, do gaming w Fallout 4's most popular mods are now ones that remove Bethesda's disastrous 'next gen' update

HowMany, do gaming w Tarkov studio claims it actually doesn't have the server capacity for everyone who bought the game for $150 to play its upcoming PvE mode, still wants players to pay extra

Interesting aside - gamers continue to enable these thieves by “leasing” their products. Boycott? No?

Phegan,

Many streamers are actively boycotting right now

@Ultragigagigantic@lemmy.world avatar

Grey Zone Warfare is almost done, why would I give money to tarkov devs, especially now that everyone can plainly see they’ll do shitty shit to their playerbase?

penquin, do gaming w Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive is laying off 5% of its workforce and 'rationalizing its pipeline,' the latest skin-crawling corporate euphemism for people losing their jobs

Yay capitalism. The pursuit of infinite quarterly profit will fuck and enshitify everything we’ve ever known.

Son_of_dad, do gaming w Ubisoft is stripping people's licences for The Crew weeks after its shutdown, nearly squandering hopes of fan servers and acting as a stark reminder of how volatile digital ownership is

When Nintendo eshop closed, I lost all my purchases. I tried contacting Nintendo to see if they could transfer my purchases to my switch account, but contacting Nintendo is like trying to contact god, you’re gonna get nowhere
