Ah man, mine is only 18 years old.

Rynelan,

17y 10m for me

instamat,

Lol mine too. I guess I wasn’t that early of an adopter.

gridleaf,
@gridleaf@lemmy.world avatar

Did you make your account for Half-Life 2? My account is the same age, and that’s the game that introduced me to Steam.

Speculater,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

I think so or CS, I’m not sure?

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

I made an account in January 2005, probably for HL2.
I initially resisted making an account and I hated Steam back then.
They’ve since fixed a lot of things and I now have 250+ games on it.
I have to admit, Valve is one of the few big game companies that haven’t gone to absolute shit.
Though I dread the day GabeN steps down or sells out…

Another thing that I didn’t agree with back in the day was WoW, paying a subscription to play was a hard no. Still haven’t played it, which kinda sucks because I was a big fan of the old Warcraft games and of RPGs in general.
Voting with my wallet certainly didn’t change much for them, although it probably was better for me.

gridleaf,
@gridleaf@lemmy.world avatar

That’s quite similar to me. I got HL2 Jan. 2005. I played Guild Wars instead of WoW because I didn’t want to pay for a sub.

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

The first Guildwars was great.
The second one was nice too and I played it a bunch, but there’s something about the first I can’t quite put my finger on, might just be nostalgia.
My GW2 time has been mostly spent helping people with jumping puzzles, which are kinda cut short these days by mesmers making portals for them, which I also do sometimes.

CancerMancer,

WoW is a bit nuts: you pay a subscription fee and buy expansions? What’s the damn fee for then?

fuzzzerd,

Servers ain’t free. But they could at least roll the expansion cost into the subscription.

Xyzipper,

Christmas '04 Orange Box-er here checking in

SpaghettiYeti,

19 here :'(

funkmunki,
@funkmunki@lemmy.world avatar

Yes! I spent entirely too much time in TF2 and Gmod.

mosiacmango,

Haha yup. I bought it for half life, but figured i would play the other games first. Portal was amazing, so I gave TF2 a shot next.

I didn’t play half life for like 2 years.

wowbagger,

Hitting 20 in 5 hours… ;)

ipkpjersi,

I am at 16 as well. I feel so old now lol

aulin,

Only 18 here.

ReluctantMuskrat,

Same here. I created my account after getting Half-Life 2 for Christmas. Hard to believe that came out in Nov 2004.

XTornado,

15 here.

Swarfega, do games w Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN

I’m like 3120 or something to sign up. That day was a complete mess as everyone signing up and trying to download their games DDoSed the platform. At that time Steam was just a client to download and play Valve games.

I was younger then and had my own domain thinking I was cool but it is actually shit and uses leet speak. I’m stuck with that forever now as my account name. Sigh.

    September 13, 2003 for me it seems.

    Just a few weeks ago it feels like. Probably spent more time playing video games between 2003 and 2006 than I have between 2006 and today. Makes me sad.

    Maraval26, do games w Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN

    I remember thinking Steam would die in less than 6 months because nobody wanted dematerialised games…

    Glifted,

    Part of the problem was how poorly steam ran when it was first introduced

    Album,
    @Album@lemmy.ca avatar

    yeah at the time you were forced into it. the won servers were shut down and most peoples computers werent good enough to play CS and have this clunky software running in the background at the same time. it worked but alt-tabbing back then was a gong show and you definitely had the performance hit.

    i played CS daily then so the first day was a shit show and I dont think I got much time in that day. mostly just trying to get connected…the servers were overloaded.

    JasSmith,

    That brings back memories. I used to play ARC on WON. TEN prior to that. Anyone remember Kali? I think it’s still running.

    JasSmith,

    I still remember that meme with the Valve gear fucking a guy in the ass. Steam was not well received.

    Potatos_are_not_friends,

    I cursed Valve for forcing me to install Steam to play HL2.

    Selmafudd,

    I didn’t want it, still don’t. I actively avoided any game that required it but seems I gave up on 23 July 2011

    Draconic_NEO,

    I pirated almost any game that required it, only ended up signing up in 2018 I don’t remember why at the time but I don’t think it was to buy games since I didn’t buy any until almost a year after creating the account.

    SamHandwich,

    Wow, same here. I gave up June 30, 2011.

    Default,

    Skyrim?

    SamHandwich,

    Oblivion, actually. Skyrim didn’t come out until that November.

    shasta,

    I thought it was great. I got a physical copy of the Orange Box for $20 and didn’t care that I had to install Steam to play it. After I had it set up and realized I didn’t have to physically go to the store to get games anymore, I like it even more.

    easydnesto, do games w Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN

    11/22/2004 reporting in. Just currently 18 almost 19. I do not have a short steam ID though. Can’t remember which game was the first but pretty sure it was either half-life or HL2

    disposabletentacle, do gaming w Starfield Getting Official Mod Support in 2024 - IGN

    Wait... I thought he listed this game being "modder's paradise" or something as a selling feature. Bethesda actually made an RPG in 2023 without official mod support right out the gate? How do they expect all their bugs to get patched??

    VulKendov,
    @VulKendov@reddthat.com avatar

    This is normal when it comes to Bethesda’s usual release of their games’ creation kits.

    Game comes out, creation kit comes out early the next year.

    Ferk, (edited )
    @Ferk@kbin.social avatar

    There's already Mod support, but it's 'unofficial' (https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/).
    Most likely, what they actually mean with this announcement is that they'll add some store like they did with Skyrim 'special' edition, where they can sell you the mods and get a cut...

    Dragonmind, do games w Ubisoft's XDefiant Delayed After Being Rejected by PlayStation and Xbox - IGN

    Either both platforms restricted Passes to harder validation after Cyberpunk 2077 or XDefiant is BUGGIER than Cyberpunk 2077

    kaitco,

    Like, seriously? How bad does a game have to be to fail from such a major Publisher?

    otter,

    Yea I’d expect something like that from an indie developer that’s not familiar with the approval process

    Why would they submit if they weren’t sure if was going to pass lol

    GreenMario,

    Ubisoft is a big company. I can see it as the devs saying “it’s not ready” and some exec, high on his if you believe hard enough it’s true bullshit and said either submit it or find another job.

    Maybe they thought their checks cleared?

    Or, it’s a security violation. Maybe the game accidentally opens a door to allow unsigned software to run.

    GhostMatter,

    Best comment here. Either exec (with overconfidence or deadlines), or security violation seem most likely. Surprising that it’s for both platforms though…

    VioletRing,

    I've never played Cyberpunk, but watched my husband play for a lot of hours. I played Xdefiant's beta for a day in June. I'm puzzled by why it didn't pass. Beta was not buggy, had maybe one minor issue with it. My guess is security violation.

    Son_of_dad,

    I can’t even play Borderlands 3 on my ps4, it crashes repeatedly and is completely unplayable. Somehow this garbage made it past the quality control

    GunnarRunnar,

    More likely is that Cyberpunk was that big of game that neither platform wasn't willing to risk losing sales for not being out day 1.

    MurrayL,

    Or neither. Platform cert doesn’t directly correlate to how many bugs a game has, it’s a set of very specific test cases that software has to pass to be approved for release: show the correct button prompts for the platform, have correctly-implemented achievements/trophies, show correct error messages, etc.

    Some of the tests do include things like ‘don’t crash during normal operation’, but the failures could be almost anything. (Source: am a developer)

    Incredibly, some of Steam’s early adopter accounts are still actively in use today, a full two decades after their creation.

    There are dozens of us!

    At least

    Edit: Mine turns 20 in 5 days

    scottywh,

    Apparently I’ve got 6 more days til mine turns 20, as well.

    Green_Bay_Guy,

    I’ve got about 8 hours, but I also live on the opposite side of the earth +12 hours, so we’ll see if it’s bound to UTC time 😂https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/39f2c801-03a2-4d5e-8b48-fec55f92f28e.png

    dolle,

    I finally managed to find my account age. 19 years and one month! Time flies.

    I had a long hiatus, but I still play FPS games regularly. And I can still join a random HL2 deathmatch and pwn :).

    sugar_in_your_tea, do games w Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN

    Nice. I didn’t make a Steam account until it supported Linux back in 2013 or so. So I guess I’ll be celebrating 10 years on Steam soon.

    Son_of_dad, do games w Ubisoft's XDefiant Delayed After Being Rejected by PlayStation and Xbox - IGN

    Considering the huge lineup of unfinished, broken games, this one must be REALLY broken to get rejected.

    In America, probably not. It’s 21 for all states due to a federal law. If a state has it lower than 21, they get way less funding for Federal high ways, as the bill was aimed to lower drunk driving.
