Ummmmm, nobody gives a shit if EA keeps creative freedom. Nobody likes EA. EA aquires creative studios, takes their IPs, steps on the throats of creative giants who made name value for something, and then laughs as they add borderline mandatory paid DLC, and laughs as they destroy properties.
If this new owner does literally nothing besides buy smaller studios, and leave them alone to do what they want, it’s an improvement.
Considering the new owners are famed journalist murderer and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman and Presidential nepo-in-law Jared Kushner, I’m doubtful that respect for the creative process is high on the list of priorities. And yeah, EA already sucks but I imagine they’ll find lots of innovative ways to drive EA to new heights of terribleness.
Between alan wake 2 barely breaking even and fbc firebreak flopping hard, I can see why they would change the CEO. hopefully this doesn’t compromise the actual games in the future to try and get more money
AW2 was incredible, but I knew it wouldn’t do well when I played it, because it’s too niche. I love the Weird Fiction universe they’re building, but it’s just not pulling the Resident Evil audience.
Firebreak I think was their attempt to monetize the IP, but oof, it’s just not fun. I feel like they could have gone more “friend slop” in tone and been much more successful. Imagine a game loop like Repo or Lethal Company, but set in the Oldest House, interacting with weird, goofy phenomena. Instead it’s a very dry shooting experience wrapped in a very dry upgrade system. I want to support them, but it feels like work to play this game…
Alan Wake 2 sold like shit because no physical release on launch for console and it’s still only available on Epic Games Store for PC. I refused to buy it until the physical release came out. Good game by the way.
I got Control: Ultimate Edition for $4 on sale recently and was really surprised by how good it is. One of the few games I’ve stuck with right through to beating it, and the DLC too. I’ve been considering Firebreak but the backlog is long and money is a little tight for frivolous promises right now. Sounds like I should play Alan Wake, though!
Its a cool game and there is really nothing like it but I won’t lie I hate actually playing it, the controls and gameplay are just meh and some of the bosses are ridiculous but the setpieces and everything else was top tier.
I liked Control but Alan Wake was a sludge. Its age really shows. That being said, it wasn’t necessarily bad enough that I couldn’t tank through the game, but if Control were in lower A tier, Alan Wake would be upper C tier
Tero Virtala has stepped down as Remedy CEO with immediate effect. Virtala, who was appointed CEO in 2016, will continue to work for the developer for an “agreed transition period” while it begins the process of appointing a new leader.
Remedy co-founder and chief product officer Markus Mäki will take on the role of interim CEO, effective as of today (October 22). Mäki has been on the developer’s board of directors since 1995, and is also chairman of the board. As Mäki becomes interim CEO, Henri Österlund will take over Mäki’s previous role as chairman of the board. Österlund has been a board member since 2017.
“I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016,” said Mäki. “I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future.”
Last week, Remedy announced it would be adjusting its financial outlook for 2025 following “weak sales” of its first multiplayer title, FBC Firebreak. It recognised a non-cash impairment of €14.9 million, representing the game’s development costs alongside publishing and distribution rights.
Remedy previously forecast both its revenue and operating profit would increase from the previous year. It now estimates a decrease in operating profit as Firebreak did not meet “internal targets.”
Controversial figure. IDK if I ever liked him, TBH. Even though he was cleared of the sexual harrasment charges, he still admitted to having an affair… and he gave us one of the best action games of all-time. Weird guy.
Hopefully, he’s at peace now and whoever was affected by his weird life decisions is at peace as well.
Now that he’s dead, will Team Ninja and Tecmo stop holding vanilla NGII hostage out of spite?
I strongly recall hearing he was leaving after Ninja Gaiden 2 and thinking “how much of a difference could one insane pervert make?” Then NG3 came out and felt like a mashy mess that never hooked me at all. Real shame he was doing such harm. RIP you insane pervert.
