Decided to finish up my Mimimi collection now that they’re shutting down and I’m now in full stealth tactics mode.
I’ve been playing Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew and man, I never realized how much I miss tactical stealth games. Having so much fun.
Immediately made a beeline for the Yuki (from Shadow Tactics) DLC as soon as the option opened up.
Love that rascal and her having adopted Kuma is just perfect.
It has a super varied cast of characters as well, and I haven’t unlocked them all yet, but enjoying the ones I have so far.
I also find it kind of funny how “save-scumming” is treated as an integral mechanic in the game. Like, you don’t have to do it at all, but if you want to, the game encourages you to enjoy it and not feel bad about it as long as you’re having fun.
I finished Octopath Traveler. Same as last week, it’s really mediocre, most of the stories are boring and some are really bad, because your party basically doesn’t exist anymore, once you’ve started a chapter with a character. I just played through the character stories and didn’t do the omega secret true final boss whatever.
Edit: no ultrawide support, but there is a patch / trainer, but it messes up the UI a bit (not an issue 90% of the time). It runs perfectly on an OLED Steam Deck, locked 60fps, at highest settings.
Then I started Tunic a few days ago. You know about that story, how FromSoftware’s Miyazaki apparently made the Souls games the way they are, because he’d play games as a kid without understanding the language, so he had to just figure stuff out? That’s Tunic. The game is mainly Zelda, of course some Souls-like elements (can’t miss those in modern games) and in the end it’s also The Witness. I just beat the game and got the normal ending (maybe bad ending), but you also get a game over screen and are told you can try again for another path. I did find a lot of stuff, but I don’t know if I have it in me to go for the true ending or something all by myself. This means I’ll probably look stuff up, so I’m not sitting around for hours.
Edit: like Octopath, no ultrawide, but I haven't looked for patches. Runs well on the Steam Deck, but needed to turn down settings a notch, otherwise it felt a bit choppy, even at 60fps.
I played thru Octopath Traveler, and the story doesn’t tie everyone together until that secret last boss. Nothing much interesting in the writing until that part, I guess.
I read that Octopath Traveler 2 rectified that, and it’s one of the best JRPG of this year. I bought that on sale, but haven’t touched it yet.
I dropped Tunic halfway thru, the combat just doesn’t gel with me.
I think two or three stories briefly mention that last boss, so it wasn't too hard to figure out that something is there, but the game just makes it so unappealing and uninteresting to actually look for it, that I just can't be bothered.
I'll probably eventually get the sequel. Like you said, I've basically only heard praises of the game, but it's gonna be some time before I do.
I played both Octopath Travellers games. The second is definitely a step in the right direction in terms of cohesion. There’s also now a piss easy final boss, as well as an impossible-if-you don’t-follow-a-cheese-strategy-online secret final final boss. Merely being level 99 doesn’t cut it. Ugh. Octopath Travellers games are so charming but the devs still haven’t figured out how to end them in my humble opinion.
I picked up Sociable Soccer 24 for the steam deck as I just wanted a simple football game and FIFA doesn’t really work. Pretty good game, the controls can be a bit weird at times but enjoying it for the easy pickup and play style.
Oh one game I forgot to include is Ghost Trick. It’s so lesser known I forgot about it.
This game is amazing. It’s by the creators of Phoenix Wright and it was originally made for the DS back in 2010. It was a commercial failure because Capcom didn’t advertise it at all and since it’s released it’s been pretty obscure. It was only ported to PC this year.
I think this is a game you should go in blind. I highly recommend this game.
funnily enough I first found out about this game and started playing it literally days before the announcement of the remaster. I’ll stick with the DS version when I continue it cause I prefer the stylus for this kind of game but I’m very glad others will get to enjoy this game regardless of their ownership of a DS.
We played a few rounds of Jackbox last night with my mom and brother. My daughter and I got in a little Super Mario World this afternoon and we played a round of Pokemon TCG. I kicked her ass pretty bad. She wasn’t really happy about that. Even though we’re both just learning, I have decades of Magic and Hearthstone under my belt. 😂 She’ll get me eventually!
I don’t see people mention Cross Codes often and no one has mentioned here yet so I think it’s “lesser known”.
It’s one of the games I got. I’m 20 hours in and the game is amazing so far.
The game can be pretty challenging sometimes so I’m not sure if it’s for everyone. I’d describe the game as a MMORPG but without the MMO. It has a lot less grinding than a MMO and a lot more puzzles.
I saw some people compare it to Zelda but I feel like that’s only accurate for some aspects.
Cross code won awards and was featured several times on Linus Tech tips. IDK how lesser known it could be then. It did come out a while ago. I agree that the game is good, but it is one of the few games I quit because of performance issues.
They don’t do gaming reviews, but Crosscode was always that game Linus tested on those handheld consoles up until and including the Steam Deck. I remember him playing it to test latency and stuff on displays and stuff.
My parents asked me to bring the VR kit like I did last year. It’s an old HTC Vive I lucked into for cheap from a friend who didn’t have space to really use it once he’d moved. I run things through SteamVR.
Had to bring the whole desktop but it was worth while - my brother and mum get a kick out of Beatsaber, my dad and cousin were all about The Lab’s archery game, Longbow. Nothing else was played on it, but those two are enough. Kinda like a little side-room arcade.
Of course you can’t really play with each other, not with my one headset and PC but someone playing draws a small crowd so it’s entertaining for all.
I wouldn’t really recommend anyone to get VR at this point unless they’re super into that kinda thing as the ecosystem of games is pretty weak for the price and setup, and it doesn’t seem to be developing very fast.
However, it was a real joy to have at Christmas. Even my very aged grandpa shot a few arrows and had a marvel at it.
Otherwise, I’ll always play a game or two of FIFA on the Xbox with my brother for old times sake!
Do you mount the lightboxes when you bring it with you? Mine has been languishing in a corner for a year because I have high ceilings in my current apartment and don’t feel like going through the trouble to mount them
I don’t. I don’t at home either. I’m sure it’s terrible practice and I’m courting disaster but just standing them there on the shelves honestly does the trick. They’re quite forgiving with the view angle it seems.
I didn’t get it during the sale, but Cocoon. Such a fun little puzzle game with great art direction. It’s well worth its price tag despite being a fairly short game.
Tunic is on my list and I’ll probably pick it up later this week.
Tunic is amazing! Although the combat feels very clunky (maybe I’m spoiled by sekiro).
Thankfully, you can just turn on reduced difficulty, since the beauty of the game lies not in the slow combat, but the puzzles and puzzles within those puzzles. Also the main character is adorable.
