HipsterTenZero, do gaming w What game company from your childhood do you remember with fondness?
@HipsterTenZero@dormi.zone avatar

The 3 Bs, baby. Blizzard, Bioware, and Bethesda.

Blizzards dead to me, Bioware fell off after dragon age 1, and Bethesda refuses to take its limiters off anymore (no drugs)

Telorand,

I’m enjoying heavily-modded DA:I, but I do feel like DA1 had some better writing and direction.

The only thing I can remember from inquisition is trudging through some high level desert looking for high level rocks (which very blatantly cut their drop rate from earlier zones) so that I could make an armor and weapon that still sucked and looked like pajamas.

also that the party loves to litter

Any recommendations for mods? I’m putting together a new build for it ahead of my semi-annual replay of the trilogy

Telorand,

Yeah, definitely!

I’ll skip the skins, because I assume you’ll want to pick your own that fit your tastes, but you can find all of these at NexusMods. Some of my favorites are:

  • Speed Launch
  • 60 fps in cutscenes
  • No fall damage
  • Infinite Respec Amulet
  • Party At The Winter Palace
  • Shorter War Table Missions (75%)
  • Party Banter Time (5-10min)
  • All Bard songs for CC Music
  • Stay still in CC - Natural Edition
  • Face Ash Begone
  • Bugs Be Gone
  • Skills Enhanced by NinjaReborn
  • Inventory Capacity

You’ll also need Frosty Mod Manager to set all those up (they seem to work for me in the order I listed) and Frosty Fix.

  • Set up the mods and load order in FrostyMM, and close.
  • Launch Frosty Fix.
  • Choose the profile/pack you want.
  • Mash go.
  • FrostyMM should open back up.
  • Open the pack you created.
  • The game should launch automatically with the mods correctly enabled.

All these mods feel “vanilla-ish” and shouldn’t spoil the original experience to any significant degree.

Bullfrog for Populous and Dungeon Keeper (ruined by EA).

Troika for Arcanum and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (ruined by Activision).

weew,

I only remember Syndicate from Bullfrog

Neversoft, Rareware, Sega, Activision, EA, and Bethesda created a lot of great memories from my childhood. Neversoft is defunct, Sega still makes some decent stuff but nowhere near what they did in the 90s, EA is EA, and the rest are now owned by Microsoft... so...

I just got THPS3 for windows (from Neversoft) running on my Ubuntu pc yesterday. So much fun, I find a way to play it once every ten years or so.

THPS1 and THPS3 are untouchable masterpieces. The Tony Hawk license never faltered when they were in charge.

As soon as I saw the title, I was gonna say Maxis, too. I like how they called their games “software toys”.

Unreal Tournament 2004:

Kraivo,

It wasn’t great. It was just good in sense of it’s time. Some of those music still instantly wakes me up and turns into hunting machine

stoy,

I have the entire soundtrack in my music library, Hyperblast 2 Redeux is awesome.

I also regularly play UT2004 online, DM-Deck17 is my favourite original map, amazing flow, it just goes hard.

Kraivo,

My favourite forever will be Gerudo valley remix from one of the custom games

But i know more song from original soundtrack

swordsmanluke, do games w What moment from a video game made you cry?

The ending of Limbo when I realized what that game had been about left me fucked up for weeks.

Similarly, the bathtub scene in What Remains of Edith Finch ensures I can never play that game again.

Bastion’s near-ending, if you forgive

spoilerZulf and his boys gradually stop trying to off you.

simple,

Still remember this moment 10 years later. I never liked that character but it still hit me in the feels.

dan_the_accountant, do games w What were your top favorite video games as a kid?

Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

Super Mario Sunshine

Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Ages

Golden Sun 1 and 2

These are the games that made my childhood great!

skybreaker,
@skybreaker@lemmy.world avatar

Golden sun games are so good. I wish that series would get a revival

JAWNEHBOY,

Oh golden sun was such a gem. My parents bought it used for cheap and I had such low expectations - spent so many hours playing through the storyline as a kid it has to be the best playtime/$ investment in my lifetime so far.

Definitely going to go hunt down Golden Sun 2 now

I’m replaying Prey (2017) and Fire Emblem Awakening. Also, some Super Mario Wonder, when my children and wife are not hogging the switches.

Xero, (edited ) do gaming w How are you all playing these insanely complex games?
@Xero@infosec.pub avatar

I’m playing Baldur’s Gate 3 with Wyll as my mage, and two custom hirelings that I brought in to replace Shadowheart the cleric, and the vampire thief guy who I was really liking up until he tried to bite me. So I killed him. Also thinking about letting Gale starve to death because I’d rather sell surplus magic items. The heroic characters talked too fucking much, and I didn’t appreciate all their drama. Hirelings are quiet and they kill who I want them to kill without complaing about it.

I’m playing a half-drow elemental monk who somehow learned to play the lute and lyre. He’s black because I’m black, which is also why I wanted Wyll. I found a cowboy hat somewhere. Cowboy monk

Necronomicommunist,

The best playstyle is to do whatever the fuck you want, and this is it.

sic_semper_tyrannis, do gaming w Anyone knows about calm Windows games with 1-finger touch screen support?

PC Gaming Wiki states that World of Goo is touchscreen optimized. It’s such a great game.

buedi,

Oh yes! That one was fantastic. It´s been a long time. Wasn´t it part of the very first Humble bundle?

sic_semper_tyrannis,

Oh, I wouldn’t know that. I do remember playing it years ago, I think when it first came out.

brsrklf,

It was either in the first two or in the second one.

I am not sure because I know I got it from the second bundle, but that one included the games from the first humble bundle too.

Though I already had it on the Wii for quite some time at that point. I knew the original flash game, Tower of Goo, and I’d spent so much time messing around with that thing, I was pretty excited that they made a whole game around it.

Grimpen,

Got so many good games through Humble Bundle. I remember the early days when all the games were Linux compatible. That was around when I stopped dual booting and just ran Linux full time.

ECB, (edited ) do gaming w What game genre would you like to see more entrants in?

I’d like multiplayer shooters that put emphasis on clean visuals designed to transmit information as well as more emphasis on movement.

Even with all the hats, visibility in TF2 is a masterpiece compared to 90% of games. One team always bright red, one team is always bright blue. The maps aren’t full of noisy scenery and still look great.

Dark_Arc,
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

Yeah… Diabotical looked like a promising update to AFPS (which is what I’d say you’re describing), but it didn’t change enough of the formula (I blame the weapon design choices) and it launched on EGS instead of steam.

ECB,

Yeah, I kind of intentionally avoided saying AFPS because unfortunately these days that tends to mean (like with diabotical) games which are desperate to be the most hypercompetitive aspects of quake. Duels or FFA aren’t really my thing, give me teams and objectives!

Perhaps unsurprisingly UT2k4 is one of my favorite of all time

Dark_Arc,
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

Diabotical did do teams and objectives. I think what really needs to happen to bring the genre back to life though is for there to be a really good campaign tied to a really good multiplayer experience that brings in some new weapon design instead of the Quake meta weapons with minor tweaks.

UT4 was looking promising in terms of multiplayer before Epic killed the project.

You might like roboquest it’s a very recent game that’s not PvP but has a lot of AFPS characteristics.

IDK, kinda feels like we need idSoftware to do a new Quake with new story and new weapons even if they don’t call it Quake (or to release a DOOM multiplayer experience that is actually fun).

Mummelpuffin,
@Mummelpuffin@beehaw.org avatar

Well, there’s another Quake 3 clone attempt every few years and every time no one cares. Diabotical made me especially sad because it shook the forumula up in some very smart ways and the Wipeout game mode needs to be stolen by pretty much everyone (and won’t be).

Bananable, do gaming w Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Vampire Survivors

RaspberryRobot,

Dopamine go brrr

blindsight,

What is there to do in the end game? I’m at the point now where I can get 1000+ golden eggs and I don’t even know how much gold per run, if I want to, but the whole thing is just fairly easy and repetitive. No matter which character I get, I can use pretty much the same OP combo.

I guess I could just go back to making the game hard again by disabling eggs, the OP weapons, and other things, but then what’s the point since a lot of the fun is in unlocking things?

Or am I just “done” the game, now, and it’s time to move on to Soulstone Survivors or Brotato?
