kiljoy, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

Old school runescape. I just get addicted to the grind until I need a couple month break.

threeduck, do gaming w TIL that Will Wright, while making The Sims, was inspired by Quake

Also I understand his house burnt down in the late 20th century, and the joy of rebuilding/furnishing was another motivation for the game.

ByteOnBikes,

Yep! That was the story in the book. He grabbed his wife and neighbor, and when they returned, everything was burned to the ground!

He originally wanted it to be about a game where people interacted with furniture to feel things, and it was called Dollhouse. But play testers found watching their Sims more fun.

DesolateMood, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

Call of duty black ops 3. Most of that time was spent in custom zombies maps, but the third party client that cleans up the cheater problem that plagues every old cod let me enjoy some occasional multiplayer, which despite being apart of the infamous jetpack era, I actually quite enjoy

BmeBenji,

Custom zombies maps are the beeeeest

olafurp, do games w My recent experiences with big budget AAA after years of avoidance

I don’t play new games a lot because I don’t want a Ubisofted ARPG game where you’re just riding an open world rail with grinding sessions in between or a generic AAA shooter with crazy system requirements. Horizon Zero dawn was pleasant play though even though it had the Ubisoft formula because.

Elden Ring was great though and I’ve heard good things of Black Myth Wukong.

I just want to have fun and experience some new fun game mechanics or with some fun exploration element or with a gripping story. Indie games satisfy my itch very well.

I’ll play the next GTA since those are genuinely just a marvel of modern technology with a story and exploration elements.

I’m now always looking for a game that’s doesn’t require 30h of filler grinding to complete. It’s crazy but Magic Archery is free on Steam and I had more fun with it than some AAA games albeit very short.

Very kind of you! Hope whoever gets one enjoys it.

celeste, do games w What do You think about level scaling in cRPGs?
@celeste@kbin.earth avatar

It's generally implemented in a way that takes away fun. If a game had fun fights that were always intended to be strategic, it'd be ok, but when you have to kill identical mob after identical mob to progress in the plot, i don't see the point.

i remember getting bored and annoyed near the end of oblivion.

schnurrito, do gaming w Balatro is rated PEGI-18 and Among Us inspires disgruntled people with medical needs. What other video games have been secretly eroding the very fabric of American society?

Pokémon taught children everywhere that if they enter strangers’ houses without warning, the strangers might randomly give them useful objects that help them in life.

On the contrary, I think kernel level anticheat should be illegal

TachyonTele, (edited ) do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of December 15th

A very kind soul gifted me Soma today.
I will be turning the lights off, upping the sound system, and enjoying that after I eat.

Edit. Holy shit this game is good.
I went in knowing the basics of the story and who you are, but that’s about it. This game must be amazing in VR

entropicdrift, do gaming w Is there any (single player playable) game with $10 which has made you point any go "haha" or given you an equivalent feeling because it was that enjoyable for every moment you played it?
!deleted5697 avatar

A number of the best games of all time are quite cheap:

Tetris (pretty much any version)

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (use OpenRCT2 to run it well on a modern PC)

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic 2 (use The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod to add back in the stuff the devs had to cut for time, otherwise the ending is disappointing)

Balatro ($9.99 on mobile or $19.99 when bundled with Slay The Spire on Steam)

Slay The Spire

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (free and open source)

DOOM (the original, not the 2016 game, very cheap and there are literally millions of mods and community made maps)

Droechai,

Settlers2 with the Return to Roots together with RCT2 (OpenRCT) as well as Supreme Commander are still racking up hours of my free time

Tidesphere, do games w What game surprised you with their length?

Final Fantasy 12

I had just come off of FFX while running through all the FF games that I could. With FF12, I got to a point where I had a solid amount of freedom and did a bunch of side quests and stuff. Then the next portion of the story takes you to this mountain, and I thought, ah cool, this looks like “new base” material. They lay out new information about the plot and then the next stop is to assault an air ship.

Kick ass, I think. This is probably roughly the story equivalent of the assault on Bevelle from FFX, you go in, fight your way through, a cinematic happens and the thrust of the story changes, new info drops, motivations change and are renewed just like in FFX.

Nope. You get to the boss on that ship, it’s some dude you have little to no investment in fighting. You kick his ass, he transforms, easy fight, and the game just ends.

I sat in actual open mouthed disbelief. There was no way the game ended there, at what I felt was dramatically and game time wise to be the obvious mid point. And yet, there the credits rolled.

I was so disappointed.

Knives,

I haven’t played since the original release, but I vaguely remember feeling the same way. If I remember correctly you get to the boss and he is practically like who are you guys. I felt so let down there was no build up between the boss and your characters.

DireTech,

And then Square repeated it with FFXV. Whole time I was like why do I care about this villain? Apparently you had to play some side game or read a story to understand why you were meant to care.

Tidesphere,

With the decision that we needed to play the Kingdom Hearts mobile game to fully understand KH3, I’m starting to not like Square telling us we need to play so many different games to get how KH plot was

DireTech,

Wow did not know about that. Guess I’ll stick to KH1 and 2.

Maybe you’re not coming across them regularly but they’re well known outside the corporate world - not to the extent of Microsoft but it’s not the last time they’ll be in the spotlight.

Indeed, not regularly. I only had the pleasure of hearing about them when I had a job that mandated it. They are explicitly targeted at business users.

    atrielienz,

They literally just urgently requested that everyone update windows 10 and 11 the other day because they found a zero day. Cloudstrike is only unknown if you don’t pay attention to anything privacy related.

BluJay320, do gaming w What order should I play the Halo series in?

As others are saying, just go with the release order. You can ignore anything after Reach.

Mango, do gaming w Inspired by another post

The only people who are triggered are you guys. You’re dealing with trolls who only say that shit to get your goat. They don’t give a shit that they’re playing as Ciri. They’re not even racist for real. They just wanna hear you do your hardest to lash out right back at them for their lazy input.

    grrgyle,

Yeah they play the loser and we play the woke angel, it’s kind of win-win because they get whatever it is they get, and we get to feel smart and superior.

AI has kind of taken the fun out of it, though… like for real, convincing sounding, dog whistle sprinkled, trollish duck speak is so easy to generate, I struggle to care about interactions on main socials. I mean I don’t go there, but if I did…
