Mordikan, do games w Does anyone else find it suspicious that there wasn't any criticism on here about Stop Killing Games until after it hit 1.4M signatures?

I mean I was critical of it well before it hit 1.4M signatures. As it ramps up in articles about it, I'd assume an increase in negative sentiment in addition to the positive side. Its not a perfect thing and has different viewpoints, so it makes sense.

mnemonicmonkeys,

And what is your argument against the petition? All it says is that developers need to leave their game in some playable state for those who laid for it, with several options offered as examples

Mordikan, (edited )

Because as you already stated, that's all it says. There is a lot of open interpretation to what that means and not all of it refers to big publishers/devs like EA.

For example, indie games like Objects in Space. It was Early Access and ran into technical issues which led to funding issues as they could only work so long on it. Its broken essentially. But it doesn't matter if the project was beyond their scope of skill or they ran out of money, they would be forced to pay to fix it. This means (and for other indie devs) if not certain their project will succeed, having to block sales in EU. Its potentially the most damaging not to the Ubisoft's and EA's, but to the Flat Earth Games, Bugbytes, ColePowered Games, etc. Its asking new indie developers to take on optional risk by releasing in the EU. Remember no where in the petition does it mention live service games. Only just games.

Additionally, the points brought up in the petition needed to be bullet proof. The moment that petition started to get close to 1M, you know publishers started turning gears to block future legislation. The committee of petitions will verify the petition and then refer it for fact finding. The points needed to be concise for the purpose of the fact finding committee. And they needed to be geared towards the EU acting which around a dozen times now have stated that while concerns are valid, it is up to the member nations to propose legislation on this (which is who the major publishers are reported to have approached - not some EU committee).

I'm still salty about EA's Darkspore (which I might add doesn't mention on the case that internet access is required to play - which I did not have back in the day), but this petition just feels like minimal impact. I would just like to remind people that advocating SKG may feel good but that rarely equates to doing good.

NOTE: I'll probably be downvoted to hell on it, but I imagine that is all that will happen. There really is no solid argument against what I've said.

tobz619, do games w Would you considering watching playthroughs of a game the same as playing that game?

Not the same but is certainly valid as a way to enjoy the game.

I watch loads of Mario Maker 2 stuff but have never touched the game since I don’t have a Switch

modernangel, do games w Would you considering watching playthroughs of a game the same as playing that game?
@modernangel@sh.itjust.works avatar

No. Watching a playthrough is completely passive vs. playing through, interactive. Doing the actual playing through will light up distinct brain regions that passive consumption doesn’t.

xxce2AAb, do games w Would you considering watching playthroughs of a game the same as playing that game?

Hell no. The essential difference between games and movies/television or books as a source of entertainment is that they’re participatory. The player’s choices during interaction affects the exact outcome.

That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with being entertained by others making those choices, but they won’t be yours.

Wahoo! You’re a Lemmy institution!

blockheadjt, do games w Steam is cracking down on porn games, to keep Payment Processors happy.

Copy Epic’s model of selling “Sbucks” or similar, which you then spend on those games. Problem solved.

aksdb,

I think it’s not that easy. From what I understand, the payment providers enforce that for the whole store, otherwise they don’t want to be involved. Quite shitty, but they have enough weight to pull shit like that off.

rdri,

We already have Steam Marketplace. You can buy stuff with your Steam Wallet.

Gaylactus,

You can literally just “buy” stuff, and put whatever your currency is, in your wallet. so the transaction was already made, to no specific product. How are they able to track that, is utter nonsense. This is just the companies forcing them to do their bidding. I mean if those games have questionable content (and by that I mean pedophilia or zoophilia), I do agree with that, and I feel that is a responsibility from Valve itself, not other companies.

De_Narm, do games w Current fit in the Witcher 3, anything I should be on the lookout for?

Yes, there’s a main story event in the DLC with the single best piece of equipment - the Professor’s spectacles. Buy them, it’s your only chance!

Also there is some missable witcher gear in the very same quest, I think. Just get everything in the Borsodi Brothers’ venue.

atocci, do gaming w When you need to set the mood
wise_pancake,

I find the sequence of “You Win”, “You Lose”, “You Tie” to be highly representative of live, and poetic in its presentation.

Hazmatastic,

It’s not even the track list for me, it’s the track lengths. Some of them are 3 seconds lmao

Honestly, I do not plan to buy it after Below Zero. Now that they did all the evil stuff I guess my decision is well justified.

I am happy that it’s a Peripeteia developer saying this. The game is a mess (because it’s Early access) & needs a looooot if optimization, but boy it’s something else.

Gives me Ghost in the Shell vibes

bjoern_tantau, do games w For people who want to play their favorite games but are unable to, what are you currently doing?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Due to Long Covid I can only lay in bed and most games are too intense for me. So I actually do watch let’s plays.

I really like Welonz. She has a really nice mix of indies and big titles, regularly tries out a great variety of games. She is very thorough and while she might not find all the secrets she will go out of her way to show alternate endings and stuff. And she has an interesting voice, so rumor has it that she is actually a ten year old boy.

darkguyman,

While I have no problems with let’s plays, I still feel like they’re kinda subjective. No commentary playthroughs are on the opposite end of the spectrum but I feel really really bored watching them and I can’t say the same for let’s plays.

linrilang, do games w Yep, I actually own 7,255 games on Steam. I’ve played 23% of my library. I regret nothing.

23% played? That’s basically 100% by Steam standards. You’ve officially made it.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yeah, I have far fewer games and have played a lower percent of the ones I have. There are just so many bundles that have one or two games I do want and I just add the rest to my library.
