as much I love the genre, but most single player 3D action/adventure platformer games that are based around a story OR fully arcade-y.
both aspect looses their point if you 100% the game.
Like, I just finished New Super Lucky’s Tale, and though it was an excellent 3d platformer, I don’t think I’ll start a new game.
but not only 3D games. Like Shovel Knight also falls into this category. Amazing and exciting game, but other than a harder difficulty (as New Game+), it doesn’t really have too much of a replayability.
I think it is a pretty great handheld, but I am more of a DS guy, I keep playing several of its games thanks to Wimmfi, even when the 3DS has retro compatibility I think using a proper DS is way better.
With that said, the 3DS has its own fair share of good games, and it is your console if you like RPGs, I just would want it to have more visual novels.
Yea, it’s a real banger. For the uninitiated, it’s set in Feudal Japan that plays like Resident Evil but with Demons instead of zombies. And they have one of the 3 titles on steam for a relatively fair price if you don’t have access to a ps2 and a physical copy.
It’s been a while since I gave it a shot myself. I haven’t fiddled with “The Great Old Ones” on Linux since back in the late 90’s. So you’re likely more of a proper authority on the matter than I.
There is a game from the MS-DOS age of 1996 called Realms of the Haunting where you traverse large open areas for hours searching for items and interactables needed to progress.
You might clear it a second time just to make the experience seem like a linear cohesive string of events but I can’t imagine you would want to clear it any more than that.
Axiom Verge 1 is a great metroidvania. I also tried 2, but it didn’t click with me at all. Cave Story is great as well. Dead Cells, but that’s more of a rogue lite game. Binding of Isaac is also one of my favorites, but it’s a top down rogue like.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Old school Zelda and direct sequel to A Link to the Past.
Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates. I’ve also got Shadows of Valentia sitting on my SD card, but really don’t have the energy for tactical RPGs anymore.
Pokémon Alpha Sapphire was fun. Also enjoyed Pokémon Sun, even if just for Alolan Raichu. Love that surf rat.
Super Mario 3D Land, but I don’t know how well it holds up, considering how much 3D World improved upon the formula. Should still be a fun play.
Also, Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure 3D, which was released on other systems waaaay before the 3DS port. I never managed to play any of its original releases, but I think I might have gotten it for free or something on 3DS because I don’t remember buying it, but do remember enjoying it when I played it.
Signalis is a 2.5d top down 3rd person single player survival horror title available for switch, it is probably one of the best modern examples of the genera taking clear inspiration from older titles like silent hill and resident evil 2. It’s very story based and currently on sale for the switch, I would highly recommend it.
It is a new game, but it very much has an old school vibe and is clearly leaning strongly on what made older titles great.
The Messenger (a ninja Gaiden style Metroidvania) and Sea of Stars (a Chrono Trigger style RPG)
Blasphemous 1 and 2 are some really fucking amazing Metroidvania games with some incredible pixel art.
Hollow Knight is another gorgeous game that, to me, is the closest thing to Super Metroid in modern genre.
Axiom Verge 1 and 2 are love letters to Metroid actually…
Octopath Traveler is a nice jrpg style game with great visuals that mix pixel art with modern graphics.
Cuphead is a great platform run n gun.
Blazing Chrome is a love letter to Contra.
Huntdown is a fucking awesome platform shoot em up with amazing pixel art set in a cyber punk dystopia reminiscent of old 80s-90s action movies.
And the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge is a great arcade style beat em up that really captures the old TMNT 4 vibes.
Mother Russia Bleeds is another great beat em up with a great story and ambiance.
The Undertale series is a great RPG series that’s worth a playthrough for real. It’s so much fun and the story and characters are so well written.
Broforce for complete pandemonium, especially with friends. It’s like The Expendables, the game. Except you can destroy everything on the screen.
Towerfall is a great multiplayer challenge game well worth it.
Gato Roboto is a fun game worth playing. So is Under Dungeon. Or Dogurai and Squidlit If you reach to play a more Gameboy style experience.
Flashback, a cyberpunk Prince of Persia style game. It’s an oldie but a goodie.
Crypt of the Necrodancer is a great dungeon crawler where you have to follow the beat of the music. It’s an amazing game. They even made a Legend of Zelda game based on it. Called Cadence of Hyrule.
I mean there are so many more but those are in my top on the switch.
