Sanctus, do games w A whole bunch of racing games were cheap recently, and there are so many that it's difficult to look through them all. What do you recommend looking out for in future?
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

You’ll have to sail the seas to get it but Fatal Inertia is my favorite racing game.

Skua,

Oh cool, I've never even heard of this one. Allowing the player some actual control over the z-axis is such an obvious thing to add to an AG racer now that I've seen it, but I've never even considered it before

@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

As far as I know you need a 360 emulator to play it. Very interesting and unique racing game with fun customization options. This day and age the lifespan may be more limited but it still some fun on the couch with a buddy.

remon, do games w Gamers have you ever been in a game competition or something similar?

I almost qualified for the World Cyber Games LAN event at some point.

Strive 2.0 probably means they’ll expand the game’s life like they did with REV, by making a REV2 update instead of shifting to a new game altogheter. The new update will probably cost around 30/35 euros. I’m good with this, I think GG:ST has so much life left in it. Incredible how it has been around 5 years already.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Even this is only a guess. There are a lot of reasons why developers got away from this model, and there are one or two reasons why I’m the weirdo who wants us to return to it.

memo,
@memo@feddit.it avatar

Did developers really shift away from it though? I feel like season passes and updates brought the concept closer, in fact, by prolonging a game’s life without having to buy the same game three or four times (which is what happened back with Street Fighter 4).

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Season passes and updates are what they’re doing now rather than splitting their player base with a new SKU. But of course, that new SKU comes with advantages like being able to freeze the game at a certain point in its life.

memo,
@memo@feddit.it avatar

yeah, but at the same time no one usually plays the older version of games such as SF4 and GGXXAC+RR! Rare exception is Street Fighter Alpha 2, simply because it was a different world and americans were too used to that one version.

So at that point might as well have one very long game that is frozen at the end of its 5-8 years old life cycle.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

No one plays the old version now because we have no choice. Plenty of people would have preferred to go back to Tekken season 1 and Dragon Ball FighterZ season 2, but we didn’t get that option.

OrgunDonor,
@OrgunDonor@lemmy.world avatar

I would be incredibly surprised if they charge for the update. It makes no sense to do so, you just split the community. And they announced 2 new characters(at least), so V2 will come with a new season pass they will charge for.

I also presume the V2 is the release of the new ranked mode, which hopefully fixes the garbage tower and it’s floor mechanic(preferably just delete it and give us a ranked queue with elo please)

memo,
@memo@feddit.it avatar

I think you had to pay for the Rev2 upgrade? I understand what you mean though, they should probably include it in the new season pass. I really hope they release the new ranked mode way before the next year.

I played in a Halo 2 tournament at my local theater when I was a kid. Got second place. Won a wristband 👍

AceFuzzLord, do games w So are GOG going to relist Devotion? Seeing how they're about freedom to buy games.

I’ve played a bit of it ( haven’t finished ) and so far it’s pretty good. I totally wish I didn’t see a playthrough of their other game, Detention, around 2018, so I could go in for a completelt blind playthrough like I am for Devotion.

Summer of 2005. Played one round of CS Source on stage at CPL. We lost.

I bought the game a while back, would highly reccomend.

Ryanmiller70, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of August 3rd

Been playing Mario Kart DS for the first time. Did all of 50cc and just have a couple cups left on 100cc. I forgot these older entries tie unlockables to difficulty.

GammaGames,

Played so much mkds, the snaking was unreal in that game

Probably the mystery dungeon games

LambChop, (edited ) do games w Gamers have you ever been in a game competition or something similar?

I’ve been in a few, but not the big cash prize tournaments they have now. I was in the TF2 studio rumble around `09ish against several game development studios. We made it through 3-4 rounds until we played against Valve, who of course wiped the floor with everyone. Later I joined a competitive team for a game called Guns of Icarus. It was fun at first and we did really well, but over time it became more and more stressful as we focused on winning over having fun. I finally gave it up because the competition eventually took all the fun out of the game. Edit- I just looked it up and the Studio Rumble I participated in happened in '07

Shayeta,

What do you mean exactly by “wiped the floor with us”? Even if they are the devs of the game they’re still devs, not pro players. How much better could they be?

Dlayknee,

Sometimes devs are pretty good at their games. Other times, they bring QA who are typically really good at their games.

dubyakay,

But it was a tournament among gaming studios, with Valve being on home turf basically.

It’s like when you had the Blizzard dev smurf the SC2 ladders at a really high level, but the guy regularly lost to the actual Korean pros.

slaneesh_is_right,

The devs are usually pretty good at their games, especially when it’s a passion project and in the earlier years of the game.

LambChop,

Yea this was back in 07, so still the early days off the game. They also had an actual strategy, unlike the rest of us lol. I wrote a little bit more about it in reply to shayeta below if your interested.

LambChop,

Valve was the only team that seemed to have a plan. The matches we played beforehand were sort of like a really good public match. People were taking it seriously, playing well, communicating, and going for objectives, but there was still a lot of “doing your own thing” and not a lot of team strategy. I think most of the studios, including ours, were just in it for the fun and didnt really practice very much beforehand.

I believe we were on gravelpit when we played valve (might have been dustbowl or one of the other western looking maps, this was back in 07 so it’s been a while). The spawn gates were sort of down in a dip in the ground, and on the defenders side where we couldnt see yet, they setup a row of turrets with a row of dispensers behind them. Like a lot of them, probably half the team or more was engineer. When the gates opened, anyone that went down into that little dip was immediately wrecked. Their engineers were running between the rows constantly spamming repairs, and they had pyros spamming flames to catch spies. We almost broke out a couple of times, but in the end never made it out of the spawn area.

Shayeta,

Hahaha, that sounds glorious, wish I was there to see it!

thermal_shock, do games w Gamers have you ever been in a game competition or something similar?

Never video games, but I came in second my only ever Magic the Gathering competition, was probably 1998 or somewhere around there. Was a counter spell/horseshoe crab deck. Lost against a very similar deck.

RANS0M, do games w Gamers have you ever been in a game competition or something similar?

When I was very young and video game places were a thing, I entered the nation wide Tron contest. It was fun, I won lots of tokens, and came in second to the winner over the whole US. :)

LostWanderer, do games w Red Dead Redemption 2 was amazing.
@LostWanderer@fedia.io avatar

I've gotten pretty far in the game before having to put it down for a bit, it's a great game for certain! I do enjoy the level of detail in terms of how NPCs act and respond around Arthur. Red Dead Redemption 2 is certainly a huge step-up in terms of quality from the original game.

I'm not particularly keen for GTA6 as those games tend to be off-putting for me (mechanically and story wise), I also hate driving in games...Unfortunately, GTA tends to involve a lot of driving.

I got the Nathan Drake Collection for free during the pandemic. Only got around to playing Uncharted 1 a couple years ago.

It wasn’t bad, it just felt dated.

Instead of remastering/remaking The Last of Us or Horizon for the Nth time, Sony should’ve worked on an Uncharted remake for the PS5.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Damn. I’m so fucking disappointed I missed that for free. The Nathan Drake collection was my first exposure to this franchise on PS4 and I had to sign into an uncles PSN account every time I wanted to play it
