@chloyster Kohan II: Kings of War, an obscure real time strategy game that can be compared to the first Battle for Middle Earth, though I find Kohan to be more complex, it's just as enjoyable

Generation Zero. Primo aesthetic, sometimes well balanced, good with friends but not so much solo.

MrNobody,

Generation Zero was amazing, when it first came out and it was all new. The machines were actually scary to be up against. I remember playing the beta and freaking out that the dogs were following me around when I was in the bunker, how they would track you down. Just always put me on edge, but then you take down a few. Learn the ropes, get better gear. And that anxiety is gone. Its not longer difficult. It got too easy, not scary to be out at night alone.

I will say though that the engine used was fantastic. I have never before, or since, had a game that loads so fast, looks so nice on mid-low level hardware. You hit load game, and you are in the game. It ran fantastic and looked really nice. The concept was amazing and for the most part it did work. Until it didn’t. Fun game but nothing outstanding.

Yeah once you explore the whole map, it becomes a typical looter shooter where you're just grinding for 6 crown weapons. I will say though, having only played for a couple years, the dev team did a remarkable job adding new content over time, and not all of it locked behind DLC. Picking this game up on sale for $5 felt like I won the lottery. It might be "just ok" but I did have dozens of hours of fun in the game with my brother and friends.

Portal 1 & 2. Far too short.

vonxylofon,

Short, but anything but mid.

Thanks again for your positive, takes-effort contributions to Lemmy! Especially with the nerve damage, I’d probably have just flat-out not posted at all if it were me. I do not know much about nerve damage but I hope things turn out well for you.

Thanks! It’s more…probably the mental toll than anything, coming to terms with this nonsense happening to me!

It’s just…alternating - most of the time it is quite numb to touch, like my nerve endings there register nothing at all. Then (typically night time) it feels like burning, a little like a hot knife? So I felt pretty sad, tbh. Still something to come to terms with. Hopefully with some care and effort it can be maybe mitigated, I doubt totally reversed…but again I won’t know for around 6 months! Shitty!

Elevator7009,

All I can say is that for the bad things in my life, I haven’t come to terms with them at all. I still consider them shitty and bad, even if I have found silver linings. I am not one of those “I am so glad X disaster happened to me because of Y positive outcome it led to” types, I’d rather not have had X happen at all, though of course I say that as someone who has not had such a big silver lining come of my negatives in life. The mental pain fades with time. (Can’t speak to physical, thankfully, let us hope it stays that way, but that also means my advice might not be quite as applicable to you.) I do not and will not feel obligated to come to terms with these things or accept them (I accept them in the sense that they are events that happened in reality and I acknowledge reality as what it is, but not in the sense of being okay with it), it just happens to be that time means they take up less headspace and I do not dwell on them—a pretty similar end result to what I think most people who “come to terms” get. All this is to say: mourn, grieve, don’t feel obligated to act happy for others, and the “come to terms, get over it/see something positive” path will not always work for everyone and you can move on with life without taking that path.

Die Hard: V for Vendetta would be a hell of a crossover.

Oh, Cattle Crisis seems to be right up my alley!
I bought Wednesday some time ago, but haven’t gotten to playing it yet - not in the right mental state either I guess.

And thanks for the Random Bundle Game mention, I hadn’t heard of it and usually have a hard time going through the bundles I own.

Saperlipopette,

I’m glad you found the post useful. I also really liked the bright colors with Cattle Crisis, I’m looking forward to improving at it.

Sackboy a Big Adventure. Absolutely no ill will towards it, and the issue may lie more with me than the game, but it just felt very “okay” for me.

I never played the others. I play with my friend overseas every Monday. He chooses the games. He may have chosen it because it is cooperative, online and not PvP. IDK.

But we also play, Aliens, Grimm Dawn, all of the borderlands games, like literally ALL of them including Tiny Tina’s Wonderland. Two is my favorite.

User name checks out, I really enjoy your writing. Do you keep a blog?

Games, as much as anything else, is a hobby and are something that people have to have a passion for to stay up with it. Just like the hobby of your coworker, who hits up the car show circuit every summer weekend, can cite every part number for the general Lee dodge charger out of the Dodge parts catalog, might be intimidating to someone who isn’t a car person. Our hobby has time and financial commitments that gatekeep others out too. We love it anyway.

Chasing an authentic or definitive experience, is like going for tops at a car show. A goal worth striving for but not required to enjoy the hobby.

Just like we can talk about how Donkey Kong, or Super Mario Bros. or Doom impacted gaming forever. So could your car guy about thunderbirds, corvettes, or some other third thing.

Equally sad is cars today, like games, are engineered to make as much money as possible and not for repair or longevity. Meanwhile the classics will always have a community dedicated to preserving them even as the stock of parts grow thin and less accessible.

In 30 years no one is going to be able to drive a car from the near future even if they wanted to as they get reduced to required apps to start and LTE connectivity for the on board computer functionality, the same way Fortnite won’t exist even though Super Mario Bros still plays fine on OG hardware

Soldier of Fortune: Payback

I already knew some of the writing was bad, and the cutscenes/animations were fever dream-esque. Despite that I really enjoyed the feel of the combat, and how destructible enemies’ bodies are in the game.

I’ll be honest. I was curious and looked up reviews of the game, and saw mostly negative-looking videos. But I chose not to watch them because I didn’t want to ruin my enjoyment of the game. I know the game is bad. But I still like it. I will say though that it’s mostly because of nostalgia.

There are some objectively bad things about SOF Payback though: regular human bosses that are bullet sponges for whatever reason and the pc port of the game being unplayable.
